  • The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of parental beliefs, parental attitudes and parental behaviors of parents with preschool children and the relationship of the variables in an attempt to help preschoolers to gain multiple-intelligence experiences in an integrated manner in consideration of their interests, needs, strengths and weaknesses. A survey was conducted on the selected parents who had preschool children, and a multiple regression analysis was carried out to look for connections among the variables. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the preschool girls were ahead of the preschool boys in linguistic intelligence, musical intelligence and spatial intelligence, and the latter surpassed the former in logical-mathematical intelligence. Second, whether there would be any differences among the preschoolers in multiple intelligences according to age was analyzed, and those who were at the Western age of five were ahead of the four-year-olds in logical-mathematical intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence and naturalist intelligence. Third, the parental attitude of the parents was identified as the most influential variable for the multiple intelligences of the preschoolers, followed by parental behavior. Parental beliefs just had a very small impact on their multiple intelligences. The findings of the study imply that parents should be helped to improve their parental attitude and parental behavior to boost the multiple intelligences of their preschool children.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of mothers' beliefs about emotional guidance on the relations between children's emotionality and parenting stress. The participants were 213 mothers of 3~5 year old children from early childhood educational institutions located in Gyeonggi province and Daejeon, Korea. Mothers completed questionnaires regarding children's emotionality, beliefs about emotional guidance and parenting stress. The main results of this study are as follows. First, children's gender, age and mothers' age was related to parenting stress. And maternal parenting stress was positively related to children's negative emotionality and mothers' beliefs that children learn emotion by themselves and negatively related to beliefs that parent should coach children's emotion. Also, the relations between negative emotionality of children and parenting stress were significantly moderated by mothers' beliefs about emotional guidance. That is, higher levels of children's negative emotionality predicted higher parenting stress especially for mothers who believe that children learn emotion by themselves. The findings of this study suggested the importance of mothers' emotion related beliefs to reduce parenting stress.

The major findings are as follows, First, preschoolers' emotionality temperament were found to have a negative effect on mothers' parenting competency. Preschoolers' activity and sociability temperament had a positive influence on mothers' parenting competency. Second, preschoolers's emotionality temperament also had a direct impact on their externalizing problems behavior, otherwise preschoolers's activity and sociability temperament were unrelated to that. Third, mothers' parenting competency had a negative influence on preschoolers' externalizing problems behavior. Finally, mothers' parenting competency had mediating effects between preschoolers' temperament and their externalizing problems behavior. These findings suggest that parental education should be concerned about parenting competency based on the understanding of preschooler's temperament.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships among mother's depression, parenting behavior of children's problem behavior. The subjects used in this study were 203 three to five-year-old children who attended kindergarten and deycare center in Seoul and Gyonggido. The research data were collected through the 'Beck Depression Inventory(BDI)', 'Maternal Behavior Research Instrument(MBRI)', 'K-CBCL'. The data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation and Stepwise Multi-Regression. The results of this study indicate that there were significant positive correlations among children's problem behavior, mother's depression, rejective and control parenting behavior. And there were significant negative correlations among children's problem behavior, mother's affectionate and permissive parenting behavior. Also, the mother's depression was the predicted variable that has the most significant relative effect on children's problem behavior. Moreover, the results of this study indicate that rejective parenting behavior that is subordinate factor of parenting behavior was additional predictor of stress.
