A Study on Preschool Teachers' Oral Health Knowledge and Behaviors in Sung-nam City (성남시 어린이집 및 유치원 선생님의 유아구강보건의식과 행태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to collect data about oral health to develop childrens' oral health programs in public centers. The questinnaire was mailed to 477 preschools in Sung-nam city. The returned 216 questinnaires were analyzed. The obtained results were as follows; (1) A majority of teachers knew the preventive probability of dental caries in deciduous teeth (86%) but the accuracy of the knowledge was not good. So, It is recommended that the preschool teachers' oral health knowledge should be improved. (2) Ninety-nine percent of responded teachers reported that the oral education program was needed and the right persons are the people whose worked at the department of oral health in public health centers. This means they agreed that the childrens' oral health program should be leaded by the public health centers. Therefore, public health centers should develop and supply the oral health education programs.

Relation with Mothers of Oral Health Knowledge and Practice for Infants Oral Health Management (유아의 구강건강관리를 위한 어머니의 구강건강관리 인식과 구강보건지식과의 관계)

  • This study examined the relationship between the oral health knowledge of infants and the oral health management of their mothers. The participants were 198 mothers living in D city. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients with the SPSS/PC 20.0 program. The results revealed oral health to be a serious problem, and that a visit to a dentist regularly is important. The relationship between the oral health awareness and the confidence that can keep cavities from children did not show significant progress on any topic. A relationship was observed between oral health knowledge and confidence in children who visit a dentist once a year, and a negative correlation between the first visit times and the effects of fluoride on the teeth. The relationship between oral health awareness and mothers' confidence when their children felt a toothache was better when they visited a dental clinic and their knowledge about infant food and beverages without sugar improved. The results of this study can be used to improve the program for the mother's oral health knowledge and effective management in children's education.

Effect of Oral Healthcare Program of Exemplary Kindergartens for Prevent the Dental Caries in Incheon City, Korea (치아우식증 예방을 위한 모범 유치원 구강건강관리프로그램 효과 - 인천 일부지역 유치원을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of the study is to confirm the effect of the oral health management program in exemplary kindergartens for prevent the dental caries. The study performs the survey on the parents about the changes in the oral health behaviors after the oral health education in April 2012 and measures the patient hygiene performance (PHP) index before the education, after the education and 3 weeks after the education to assess the removal capability to plaque on the teeth surface for the children. The analysis is performed on 130 people who join the program and respond the survey. There is no change in the behavior related to the tooth brushing of children after the oral health education. No change is found from the interest in the oral health education (p>0.05) but the recognition in the importance of the tooth positively change, as well as recognition of the tooth brushing method and the reaction to recommending to tooth brushing. The PHP index of children is significantly improved from 3.87 before the education through 2.71 after the education and 3.27 3 weeks after the education (p<0.001). The observation from the patents shows that their children have interest in preventing the cavities including 33.1% after having xylitol and 60.7% after the oral health education. In conclusion, the study confirms the effect of the oral health management program in exemplary kindergartens to prevent the cavities, meaning that it is required to activate the programs and keep implementing the programs including providing xylitol and education for teachers, parents and children to habituate the oral health behavior of the children and completely learn toothbrushing method under continuous management and reeducation.

A child oral care state according to mother's oral health education experience - selected preschool in Daegu metropolitan city (유아어머니의 구강보건교육 경험에 따른 유아구강관리실태 - 대구광역시 일부 어린이집을 대상으로)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to improve oral heath behaviour of child by analyzing child's mother oral health behaviour. Methods : A total of 361(95.0%) 3-year-old-child's mothers who sent their child to child care institution in Daegu were analyzed from October 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009. Results : 1. In relation to general nature and experience on oral health education of child's mother, mother with higher monthly income, over than graduation from university and professional job had high oral health education experience, which was statistically related(p<0.01)(p<0.001). 2. In the case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had higher dental clinic visit for 1 year, higher experience on scaling, higher good food preference for teeth health and higher use of floss, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.01). 3. Regarding child's oral management behaviour by mother's oral health importance, in the case that oral health was important, flouride toothpaste use, restriction on cavity inducting food and toothbrushing before sleep were higher only, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.001). Conclusion : In case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had experience on dental clinic visit for prevention of cavity, dental clinic visit for treatment and restriction on food in which their child's oral health behaviour were satisfactory, which was statistically related.

A Study on mothers' oral health knowledge and oral health management behavior of children (유아 어머니의 구강보건지식과 자녀의 구강관리행태)

  • Objectives : The study examined mothers' oral health knowledge and oral health management behavior to their children that affect directly children's oral health to prepare basic aiming at children. Methods : Therefore, a survey of 235 mothers in 10 kindergartens located in Seoul was conducted by self-administered questionnaires. Results : As to mothers' oral health knowledge, the correct-answer rate for questions about tooth-decay was highest, and the level of 'middle (5-7 points)' was the most common with 50.0%. Regarding oral health knowledge according to mothers' general characteristics, the higher academic background and family's monthly earnings were, the higher oral health knowledge was. It showed a statistically significant difference(p<.01). In terms of mothers' oral health management behavior to their children, 79.1% of mothers who had the visiting experience in the dentist's for caries prevention was highest. As to the number of brushing, the twice was highest with 51.2%, and regarding brushing time 2min was highest52.6%. Also, the rate of using the fluoride toothpaste was 68.4%, and the rate of mothers who helped their children's brushing was 83.3%. As to the oral health management behavior to their children by mothers' oral health knowledge, mothers with higher oral health knowledge used the fluoride toothpaste showing that there was a significant difference(p<.01). Also, mothers with higher oral health knowledge helped more children's brushing, so that there was a significant difference(p<.05). Regarding the oral health management behavior to their children according to mothers' visiting experience in the dentist's, mothers who visited the dentist's during the recent one year had higher visiting experience of dentist's for children's caries prevention(p<.01) and longer time of brushing by 3min(p<.05), and helped their children's brushing a lot. The findings showed a significant difference(p<.001). Conclusions : As the results above, as mothers' oral health knowledge and oral health management behaviors to their children affect closely children's oral health, more systematic, specific and active oral health programs should be provided to mothers.

Dental Caries and Oral Health Behavior of Kindergarten Children in a County Area of Kangwondo (강원도 군지역 유아들의 구강관리 행태와 치아 우식증)

  • In order to investigate dental caries and oral health status of Kindergarten children, a study was conducted from 1st December, 2000 to 21st January 2001. The subjects were consisted of 117 toddler and pre-school children who were enrolled in 4 kindergartens in a county of Kangwondo. A structured questionnaire was used for dental health behavior and dental examination was given by dentist for detecting dental caries The result were as follows: 1. As for the oral health behavior, 71.8% of subjects brushed their tooth twice a day, 18.8% of them once a day, 8.5% of them 3 times a day and 0.9% of them do not brushed. 68.6% of children brushed their teeth in the morning and evening, 20.7% of them before go to bed, 7.4%, and 2.5% of them after meal and before brak first. 71.7% of children used combined with scrubbing and vertical method, 28.3% of them used scrubbing method. 61.5% of their mother answered they observed oral status of children regularly. 2. Prevalence rate of dental caries (dft) was 68.4%. The prevalence rate of dft were significantly higher in the old age children, mother's lower educational level. nourishing with breast feeding, using bottle, irregular eating of snacks 3. A study on the preschool children dental health awareness and behavior of the educators at the nurseries and kindergartens in Chungnam region (충남지역 어린이집 및 유치원 교육담당자의 유아 구강보건의식과 행태에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : The oral care during early childhood plays an important role to maintain sound oral health during adulthood. As the number of children's using child care facilities is on the rise recently, the children's oral health awareness and behavior of the educators at nurseries and kindergartens are to be examined. Methods : A self-recording survey was conducted on 194 educators at the nurseries and kindergartens in Chungnam region. Results : The most frequently given snack was milk, 91.8 percent of the facilities had children brush their teeth, 63.4 percent made them apply fluoride and 56.2 percent kept children's toothbrushes in an ultraviolet rays sterilizer. There was a meaningful difference in the awareness of the necessity to educate children about oral health according to the offer of the opportunity to apply fluoride (p<0.05). A meaningful difference was found in the recognition of the necessity to educate children according to their grade (p<0.05) and to train teachers themselves (p<0.05). The most desirable persons in charge of oral health education were dentists in health centers (46.9%) in order. The more experience in teaching they have had (p<0.05), when they're married (50.5%) (p<0.05) and when they're not homeroom teachers (52.6 percent), the more regular checkups they have had (p<0.05). As for the importance of oral health and the results of regular checkups, those who had answered 'very important'(42.4%) showed higher rate of regular checkup (p<0.05) than those who had answered 'important'(23.9%). When teachers have the experience to get trained about oral care (96.3%), the practice frequency of brushing teeth was proved to become higher (p<0.05). Conclusions : The educators for children should recognize the importance of oral health education, educate children to practice oral health care, and the environment and systematic foundation should be established which the educators manage effectively.
