  • Mammography equipment is an essential detector for making an early diagnosis of female's breast lesion. Recently, in most hospitals, a digital mammography detector is used due to the wide and consistent supply of digital mammography equipment. However, the average effective radiation is increasing due to the indiscreet use of CR or DR mammography. The purpose of this study is to recognize the possible indirect radiation damage, which can be occurred due to an excessive effective exposure of radiation, by evaluating spacial radiation rate of the digital mammography detector used for female patient. Consequently, the high mount of spacial radiation showed digital mammography equipment on the horizontal direction. Considering the result, digital mammography equipment should be installed by avoiding along the horizontal direction.

  • Mammography using mammography equipment is a method of examination that is being employed most widely to diagnose the early stages of breast cancer. Detecting or diagnosing a fibrous tissue, micro calcification, or mass in the breast is influenced by the quality management of mammography equipment considerably. Particularly in mammography, quality management refers to a behavior of figuring out and correcting all sorts of hindrance factors that can cause all the problems related to the equipment associated with the diminishment of diagnosed area due to the reduction of image quality in clinical imaging in advance and maintaining a consistent level of image quality and obtaining a proper image. Here, these researchers aim to summarize and report the general contents of quality management in mammography using mammography equipment.

  • Mammography using X-rays is currently the most used for early diagnosis of breast cancer. As the frequency of use of X-ray devices increases, interest in radiation hazards caused by mammography is increasing. Therefore, in this study, in order to measure the exposure dose of the mammary gland in X-ray mammography that requires high contrast and high resolution, the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stipulates the international standards presented by IEC 62220-1-2: 2015. Based on the beam quality criteria of the recommendation, we tried to present a guideline for evaluating the average mammary gland dose. As a result, the average streamline dose value of the 4.5 cm PMMA phantom was 2.3 mGy at the maximum within the 30 kV range, and was evaluated to be 1.19 mGy based on 28 kV.

  • In digital mammography, Exposure factor were automatically chosen using by measurement breast thickness and the density of mammary gland. It may cause a increase glandular dose. The purpose of this study was to investigate optimal image quality in digital magnification mammography to decrease radiation exposure of patient dose. Auto mode gives the best image quality however, AGD showed better image quality. Image quality of manual mode passed phantom test and SNR at 55% mAs of auto mode commonly used in the digital magnification mammography. Also it could reduce AGD. According to result, manual mode may reduce the unnecessary radiation exposure in digital magnification mammography.

  • Recently, the interest on exposure to radiation is rising. The radiation exposure of mammography is higher in absorbed dose than of X-ray, therefore unnecessary exposure needs to be reduced, and higher image quality is needed. Generally, ray quality of the radiation imaging is an important factor that determines image quality and the amount of ray exposure, and they are affected by tube voltage and added filter. The X-ray energy that is exposed from mammography device is generally a continuous spectrum, which includes low energy that has minute influence on the image quality, and high energy that hinders contrast on image. Currently, molybdenum (Mo) and rhodium (Rh) are the most used added filters for mammography device, and they are used differently according to the energy region of X-ray. This study aims to find out the degree of reduction in exposure dose according to the thickness of aluminum (Al), and to study the changes in image quality and dose when the added filter plates that are made with niobium (Nb) or zirconium (Zr) are used, other than molybdenum (Mo) and rhodium (Rh), the two most used added filters that have similar atomic number and K-absorption regions as Nb and Zr. In this study, single-added filters of molybdenum (Mo), niobium (Nb), and zirconium (Zr) are used, and in some cases, Aluminum (Al) is combined with the single filters. In this case, image quality is considered to be improved depending on the type of added filters, and by using Aluminum (Al) filter together with the others, unnecessary X-ray of low energy would be absorbed, therefore the dose is expected to decrease without any influence when the concentration level becomes identical.

  • Collimator has important functions with control primary X-ray that decrease radiation exposure dose for patients and reduce scatter ray and make better quality of image. But there are no regulations for X-ray mammography device of collimator, so widely used device adopt rectangularly controlled collimator. Though digital X-ray mammography device expand supply recently, rectangularly controlled collimator of film/screen mode still used. After searching for real condition of beam field with digital mammography, we made a multi-leaf collimator which is able to adjust the beam field in accordance with size and shape of breast, and we measuring up the transitions of image quality, average glandular dose(AGD) and, Dose area product(DAP). There are no significant differences between rectangularly controlled collimator and multi-leaf collimator, and DAP value decreased by 50.72%. As conclusion, there needs to expand the use of multi-leaf collimator for optimum adoption of beam field in digital mammography, and also need to develop an automatic regulation of beam field for reduce of exposure dose to patients.

  • In order to reduce unnecessary exposure doses generated when mammography is performed using a mammography device, a shielding ratio analysis was performed when a self-made shielding body made of bismuth was applied to the breast opposite to the imaging site. In order to determine the scattering dose of uncompressed breasts during CC and MLO tests when the right and left are compressed, the experiment is divided into when bismuth is not shielded (Not used: NU group) and when shielded (Used: U group). Proceeded. The average dose of the NU group was 9.568μSv, and the average dose of the U group was 1.038μSv. The average measured dose before and after the use of the bismuth shield was reduced by 89.15%. The use of a bismuth shield for mammography can shield scattered radiation and keep exposure to radiation to a minimum.

  • When the X-ray energy is high, the X-ray penetrates the object and decrease the contrast of imaging, and when the X-ray energy is low, the X-ray increases the contrast of imaging but it is to be absorbed into the object, which in the long run increases patient's radiation exposure level. Therefore, appropriate X-ray energy is an essential element affecting the imaging quality and radiation exposure level. This study simulated the energy spectrums according to the target materials of mammography, and compared qualities of phantom imaging for the management of radiolographic quality and patient's radiation exposure level with the introduction of the mammography that employs diversified radiation quality by using new anode materials.
