  • A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. Experiments were performed to find the flow characteristics of a supersonic turbine with the cascade positions and to find a factor of the expansion loss. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested with the cascade positions. The flow was visualized by a Z-type Schlieren system. The static pressures at the turbine cascade inlet and outlet were measured by pressure transducers and a pressure scanner. Also, The total pressures at the turbine cascade back flow were measured. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions of the supersonic turbine were observed. And the flow characteristics in the supersonic turbine with the cascade positions were observed.

  • Numerical analyses were performed on the heat flow characteristics of a heat transfer plate with six different shapes (basic, rectangle, triangle, wave type) to reduce the level of white smoke at a stack. In this study, to examine the heat transfer performance (heat transfer capacity, pressure drop, turbulence kinetic energy, heat transfer coefficient) on the heat transfer plates, simulations were conducted using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS CFX Ver.14 under uniform flow conditions. The thermal flow phenomenon in a channel with six heat transfer plates could be predicted adequately under uniform flow conditions. The heat transfer capacity, pressure drop, turbulence kinetic energy, and heat transfer coefficient were affected by the flow rate, aspect ratio and plate shape. These results provide guidelines to design an effective heat exchanger with the wave type to reduce white smoke.

  • Industrial ejector system is a facility to transport, to compress or to pump out a low pressure secondary flow by using a high pressure primary flow. An advantage of the ejector system is in its geometrical simplicity, not having any moving part, compared with other fluid machinery. Most of the previous works have been performed experimentally and analytically. The obtained data. are too insufficient to improve our current understanding on the detailed flow field inside the ejector. In order to provide more comprehensive data on this ejector flow field, two-dimensional computations using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were performed for a very wide range of operating pressure ratio of the supersonic ejector with a secondary throat. The current results showed that the supersonic ejector system has an optimum pressure ratio for the secondary flow total pressure to be minimized. The numerical results clearly revealed the shock system, shock/boundary layer interaction, and secondary flow entrainment inside the supersonic ejector.

  • The purpose of this study is to apprehend the behavior of exhaust gas flow from gas turbine during part load operation in Heat Recovery Steam Generator. As a first step of this work, internal flow characteristics according to HRSG types were examined by CFD analysis. Next step, tube temperature according to gas turbine 53% and 100% load conditions were calculated by results of CFD and those were compared with temperature data gathered from real plant. Finally, thermal performance due to part load operation was calculated to estimate the influence of heat transfer in superheater. In addition, new type of device is suggested to eliminate the uneven temperature distribution of tubes during part load operation.

  • The fully developed turbulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square-ribed roughness elements on the inner wall surface in concentric annuli is studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. The analytical results of the fluid flow is verified by experiment. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, fluid Reynolds number and for heat transfer, fluid Prandtl number. The study demonstrates that certain artificial roughness elements may be used to enhance heat transfer rates with advantages from the overall efficiency point of view.

  • The smoke filling process for the atrium space containing a fire source is simulated using two types of deterministic fire modus: Zone model and Field model. The zone mode used is the CFAST(version 1.6) mode developed at the Building and Fire Research laboratories, NIST in the USA. The lied model is a self-developed fire field model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) theories. This article is focused on finding out the smoke movement and temperature distribution in atrium space which is cubic in shape. A computational procedure for predicting velocity and temperature distribution in fro-induced flow is based on the solution, in finite volume method and non-staggered grid system, of 3-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, species and so forth. The fire model i. e. Zone model and Field model predicted similar results for Ire clear height and the smoke layer temperature.

  • The instability analysis of submerged gas flow into liquid is studied, which assumes gas and liquid as viscous and irrotational. At low mass flow rate of gas, injected gas plume is collection of bubbles, and increase of gas flow rate makes plume as a jet. It is well known that the transition from bubbling to jetting occurs in the transonic region. But previous works neglect viscous effect of gas flow into liquid. This paper concerns about an application of viscous potential flow theory in cylindrical gas flow into liquid. The growth rate versus wave number and mach number is compared with various condition including inviscid and viscous flow.

  • A program that predicts trajectories of projectiles influenced by the interference flow field of helicopters is developed. The interference flow field are computed using a compressible inviscid solver in conjunction with an actuator disc model. The trajectories are predicted using 6-DOF (Degree of Freedom) equations as well as an alternative form of modified point mass equations of motion. The method for the interference flow field prediction method are validated with ROBIN(ROtor Body INteraction) model. A Sierra international bullet and a 105mm projectile are used to validate the trajectory method. Trajectories of a Sierra International bullet and a HYDRA 70 rocket firing from a helicopter are predicted.

  • In the present study, the flow field of a mesh type suppressor with varying holes at the central portion is studied to investigate drain flow characteristics in a cylindrical tank. Further, an attempt is made to understand the changes in the flow field brought about by the suppressors of different kinds in a circular tank which ultimately prevents vortex formation. For this purpose, flow visualization studies using PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) to determine the flow patterns in a cylindrical tank with circular cross section without suppressor and with suppressor are carried out after imparting rotation to the liquid in the tank. Results are obtained when there is no draining and with draining. The flow field is visualized both in horizontal and vertical planes.

  • Dynamic model for supersonic engine is proposed to design control law. The model structure is constructed to capture the local characteristics of supersonic and subsonic flow by using conservation equations. To evaluate the stability of control law under the disturbances, the air turbulence model is incorporated with the engine model. The combined model shows analogous results compared to performance analysis model which is good coincidence with CFD results and disturbance effects.
