  • The nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), which produces NH3 by reducing N2 under ambient conditions, is attracting attention as a promising technology that can reduce energy consumption in industrial processes. We investigated the adsorption behaviors at various active sites on the Ni (100) surface, which is widely used among catalytic metal surfaces capable of adsorbing and activating N2, based on density-functional theory calculations. We also investigated two N2 adsorption structures, so-called end-on and side-on structures. We find that for the end-on case, N2 is adsorbed on a top site, and the reaction proceeded in a distal pathway, while for the side-on case, N2 is adsorbed on a bridge site, and the reaction proceeded with enzymatic pathway. Finally, this study provides insight into the adsorption of metal catalyst surfaces for the NRR reactions based on the calculated Gibbs free energy profiles of the thermodynamically most favorable pathways.

  • There has been increasing demand for real-time monitoring of body and ambient temperatures using wearable devices. Graphene-based thermistors have been developed for high-performance flexible temperature sensors. In this study, the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of monolayer graphene was controlled by coating polyethylenimine (PEI) on graphene surfaces to enhance its temperature-sensing performances. Monolayer graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was wet-transferred onto a target substrate. To facilitate the interfacial doping by PEI, the hydrophobic graphene surface was altered to be hydrophilic by oxygen plasma treatments while minimizing defect generation. The effect of PEI doping on graphene was confirmed using a back-gated field-effect transistor (FET). The CVD-grown monolayer graphene coated with PEI exhibited an improved TCR of -0.49(±0.03) %/K in a temperature range of 30~50℃.

  • In this study, we propose a genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the allocation and operation order of transporters. The solution in the GA is represented by a set of lists each of which the operation order of the corresponding transporter. In addition, it was implemented in the form of a hybrid genetic algorithm combining effective local search operations for performance improvement. The local search reduces the number of operating transporters by moving blocks from a transporter with a low workload into that with a high workload. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it was compared with Multi-Start and a pure genetic algorithm through a simulation environment similar in scale to an actual shipyard. For the largest problem, compared to them, the number of transporters was reduced by 40% and 34%, and the total task time was reduced by 27% and 17%, respectively.

  • In grouting, the LW method is commonly employed to induce the gelation of cementitious material using water glass, thereby restricting the extent of material injection. Nevertheless, challenges manifest when materials are lost before gelation, particularly in regions with high groundwater flow rates or significant subsurface voids. This study developed a thixotropic grout material using LFS and GGBFS to mitigate material loss during injection, with an assessment of its flow characteristics, durability in marine exposure, strength, and injection properties. The outcomes revealed that the thixotropic grout material exhibited flow ranging from 105 to 143 mm and enhanced strength and durability compared to the LW method. Furthermore, field tests substantiated that applying vibration and impact improved impermeability.

  • Here, we develop a centrifugal microfluidic reactor with simple, fast, and high-throughput manner for the generation of magnetic Janus micro-adsorbents (MAs). By using the multi-micronozzle consisting of two separate aligned needles and centrifugal tubes, we have synthesized highly monodispersed Prussian blue- and magnetic nanoparticle-laden micro-adsorbents (PB-MNP-MAs). The enhanced cesium (Cs+) adsorption was demonstrated by conducting the adsorption isotherm and kinetics experiment which can be contributed to the porous nature of the Ca-alginate networks with a high surface area of embedded PB nanoparticles, resulting to perform rapid adsorption activity within 10 min. After Cs+ adsorption process, the as-synthesized PB-MNP-MAs were successfully harvested by introducing the external magnetic fields. Therefore, we believe that our findings can be provided new direction towards the development of advanced functional adsorbents in biological and environmental fields.

  • Efforts are actively underway to address the issues related to the high cost of Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions by designing high-performance Pt-based alloys through the control of their nanostructures. In this study, a method was proposed to control the nanostructure of Pt-based alloys, either hollow or core-shell, by adjusting the pH of the solution during the galvanic replacement reaction between the carbon-supported nickel-nickel nitride composite and the Pt ions. The physical characteristics, including the state, quantity, and morphology of the metal particles under different preparation conditions, were evaluated through X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma. When the prepared catalysts were employed for the oxygen reduction reaction, they exhibited an improvement in area specific-activity compared to a commercial Pt/C, with a 1.7 and 1.9-fold enhancement for the hollow and core-shell structured catalysts, respectively.

  • In this paper, a method (phase weighting) is presented to achieve high-gain radiation performance and dual-beamforming functionality based on a reflectarray antenna system. The proposed method aims to mitigate the beam overlap phenomenon by implementing split dual-beamforming, using phase weighting that induces differential electric field strength between sub-arrays. To validate the proposed method, a numerical model for analyzing the radiation characteristics of the reflectarray antenna was developed, and a comparative analysis was conducted with a conventional sub-array-based dual-beamforming method. Simulation results under various conditions confirmed that the proposed method not only improves the beam overlap phenomenon but also efficiently forms split dual beams across a range of required beam steering angles.

  • White light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) are widely used in displays and lighting due to their advantages of compact size, high efficiency, and long lifespan compared to traditional light sources. Glass-ceramics produced by inducing crystallization in amorphous glass through heating, finds applications in various high-performance fields. Its properties can be tailored through the addition of nucleating agents or phase separation phenomena. By forming nanometer-sized crystals, glass-ceramics can retain its characteristics while maintaining transparency in the visible range, making it suitable for a range of applications including optical switches, optical converters, lasers, medical devices, and sensors. Additionally, glass-ceramics containing rare earth elements, transition metals, quantum dots, and nanocrystals can convert blue or ultraviolet light into visible light, thereby enhancing the performance of W-LEDs. This paper explores the optical properties of glass-ceramics derived from oxide and fluoride glasses, its potential applications in W-LEDs, and recent research trends.

  • BACKGROUND: Methylmercury is analyzed by HPLC-ICP/MS because of the simplicity for sample preparation and interference. However, most of the pre-treatment methods for methylmercury need a further pH adjustment of the extracted solution and removal of organic matter for HPLC. The purpose of this study was to establish a rapid and accurate analytical method for determination of methylmercury in fish by using HPLC-ICP/MS. METHOD AND RESULTS: We conducted an experiment for pre-treatment and instrument conditions and analytical method verification. Pre-treatment condition was established with aqueous 1% L-cysteine HCl and heated at $60^{\circ}C$ in microwave for 20 min. Methylmercury in $50{\mu}L$ of filtered extract was separated by a C18 column and aqueous 0.1% L-cysteine HCl + 0.1% L-cysteine mobile phase at $25^{\circ}C$. The presence of cysteine in mobile phase and sample solution was essential to eliminate adsorption, peak tailing and memory effect problems. Correlation coefficient($r^2$) for the linearity was 0.9998. The limits of detection and quantitation for this method were 0.15 and $0.45{\mu}g/kg$ respectively. CONCLUSION: Result for analytical method verification, accuracy and repeatability of the analytes were in good agreement with the certified reference materials values of methylmercury at a 95% confidence level. The advantage of the established method is that the extracted solution can be directly injected into the HPLC column without additional processes and the memory effect of mercury in the ICP-MS can be eliminated.
