  • The Dongnae Fault in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsular is not a single fault but a complex fault zone composed of numerous minor faults. In order to deduce the paleostress tensor evolving the Dongnae Fault, we measured 329 faults in outcrops around the fault zone and analyzed the geometries of them. Most of them are steeply dipping(>65˚) and fall into three groups striking N10E, N30E and N70E. More than one half of them show the rakes less than 30˚ Paleostress tensor analysis using the collected fault data has been conducted with the Angelier's direct inversion method and the Choi's method. As result, four different principal paleostress axes each of which subtends an independent tectonic event are found. They are; (1) NNE-SSW compression and ESE-WNW extension (Event I), (2) NNE-SSW extension (Event II), (3) ESE-WNW extension (Event III) and (4) ENE-WSW compression and NNW-SSE extension (Event IV) in chronology. Therefore, the tectonic movement around the Dongnae Fault was firstly governed by strike-slip faulting related to Event I. Afterward, normal faults were formed by Event II and Event III. Finally, the dextral strike-slip faults along the major trace of the Dongnae Fault were formed in NNE direction related to Event IV.

  • Exploratory data analysis was carried out by using the long-term wave climate data in Sokcho coastal zone. The main features found in this study are as follows. The coefficient of variations on the wave height and period are about 0.11 and 0.02, respectively. It also shows that the annual components of the wave height and period are dominant and their amplitudes are 0.24 m and 0.56 seconds, respectively. The amount of intra-annual variation range is about two times greater than that of the inter-annual variation range. The distribution shapes of the wave data are very similar to the log-normal and GEV(generalized extreme value) functions. However, the goodness-of-fit tests based on the KS test show as "rejected" for all suggested density functions. Then, the structure of the timeseries wave height data is roughly estimated as AR(3) model. Based on the wave duration results, it is clearly shown that the continuous and maximum duration is decreased as a power function shape and the total duration is exponentially decreased. Meanwhile, the environment of the Sokcho coastal zone is classified as a wave-dominated environment.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor vegetation development process after timber harvesting at (Mt.) Baekwoonsan Seoul National University Forests, Korea. Two monitoring plots were established in 1994 and woody plant were monitored from 1994 to 1999. Vegetation development pattern during last six years(1994-1999) after timber harvesting were as follows; Styrax obassia, Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of the existing tree were competitive species in the first year after clearcut, and Styrax japonica and Lindera erythrocarpa as of sprout tree) and Aralia elata as of seedling were dominant species in the sixth years after clearcut. Species diversity indices of harvested forest interior was decreased at the southwestern slope and increased at the northeastern slope. According to DBH distribution pattern, No. of individuals of Lindera erythrocarpa and Aralia elata showed vigorous growth in the sub-canopy layer and then Styrax japonica, Quercus serrata, Maackia amurensis, Lespedeza maximowixzii, Lindera obtusiloba, Staphylea bumalda, Clero-dendrum trichotomum, Weigela subsessilis, in order showed good growth in the sixth year after clearcut. Lindera erythrocarpa with a reversed J-shaped curve pattern by DBH class will be increased while Aralia elata with a J-shaped curve pattern will be decreased.

  • In order to investigate the effects of seed weight, size (length and thickness), and maturation period (early maturing seed or late maturing seed) on growth of first-year seedlings in Pinus koraiensis, pot cultivation experiment with seeds collected from Gangweon University Forest was carried out under relatively controlled environment condition. At the end of one growing season, not only fresh weight, length, diameter (at underside of cotyledon) and root length of seedlings, but also number and length of cotyledon were measured. Results are as follows; 1. Germination percentage is independent of weight and size of seeds, but it was influenced by maturation period, that is, late maturing seeds surpass early maturing one in germination percentage. 2. Germination percentage is affected by maturation period of seeds in 18.3% of contribution rate. 3. Each growth of first-year seedlings is influenced considerably by the differences of weight, length and thickness of seeds, that is, heavy and large seeds produce larger seedlings than do light and small seeds. Particularly, fresh weight, diameter, length of cotyledon are significantly affected by differences of seed weight and size (length and thickness) in 50-90% of contribution rate. 4. Differences of seed weight and thickness have a tendency to affect more on growth of first-year seedlings than do differences of seed length. 5. Seedlings from late maturing seeds are superior than those from early maturing one in fresh weight, diameter of seedlings and length of cotyledon, but it's influence is a little.

  • Focal mechanism solutions in the central and western areas of the Korean Peninsula (36-37.8$^{\circ}N$, 126-128$^{\circ}E$) were obtained from the analysis of the recent seventeen earthquakes (M${\geq}$2.2) which occurred from January, 2005 to May, 2010. The spatial differences between the epicenters recalculated by this study and those announced by the Korea Meteorological Administration are less than $0.03^{\circ}$, indicating a small deviation. Focal mechanism solutions were obtained from the analysis of P wave polarities, SH wave polarities and SH/P amplitude ratios. The focal mechanism solutions show dominant strike-slip faulting or oblique slip faulting with strike-slip components. The P-axes trends are mainly ENE-WSW or E-W directions. The direction of fault plane and auxillary fault plane with NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE are almost parallel to the general trends of lineaments in the study area. The results also show that focal mechanism solutions and the main axis of stress field in the Kyonggi massif and Okchon belt are almost same.

  • Field measurements were made for long- and short-period waves and current velocities at the harbor mouth using pressure-type wave gauges and a current meter, respectively, at the Gamcheon Harbor which has a rectangular shape with a narrow entrance. The measured pressure data were subjected to spectral analyses after removing tidal effects by applying trend removal and high-pass filtering. For the band averaging of the raw spectra, in order to obtain good resolution over the entire frequency, instead of a constant band width, variable band widths were used, which gradually increase as marching from the lowest frequency towards higher frequencies. The Helmholtz resonance mode at the Gamcheon Harbor shows the relative amplification ratio of 9.2 at the wave period of 31.7 minutes, which is quite large compared with those at the harbors located on the east coast of Korea. The second and the third resonance period was 10.3 and 5.4 minute, respectively. On the other hand, the analysis of every 24 hours data shows that during storms the spectral densities are very large compared to those during calm seas and also the second and third resonances are predominant.

  • Focal mechanism solutions in the southwestern region of the Korean Peninsula ($34^{\circ}N-36^{\circ}N$, $126^{\circ}E-128^{\circ}E$) were obtained from the analysis of the recent 22 earthquakes ($M{\geq}2.0$) occurred from January, 2005 to March, 2011. The spatial differences between the epicenters recalculated by this study and those by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) and KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) are less than $0.05^{\circ}$, indicating a small deviation. However, they become a little bit larger in the coastal area due to a biased arrangement of seismic stations. Redetermined depths of hypocenters show a difference less than 12.7 km by comparison with the depth data announced by KIGAM. Most epicenters in inland area are located closely to the lineaments. Fault plane solutions were obtained from the analysis of P and SH wave polarities, and SH/P amplitude ratios. They show strike-slip faulting or strike-slip faulting with reverse components dominantly. The P-axes trends are mainly ENE-WSW or E-W directions. The direction of fault plane and auxiliary plane with 'NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE' or 'NE-SW and NW-SE' are dominant and almost parallel to the general trends of lineaments in the study area.

  • This survey was aimed to accumulate basic data of aphid population at the Horticultural Experiment Station at Suweon. The yellow pan traps were setted at five locations (Fig.1.), and ran from May 1 to October 31. 1970. About one hundred and twenty species of aphids were trapped, including 24 species of plant vims vectors. Of these, dominant species were as follows: (Asterisk shows virus vector) Aphid species No. of catches * Aphis spiraecola PATCH 2,635, * Aphis craccivora KOCH 2,377, * Myzus persicae SULXER 2,111, Capitophorus hippophaes javanicus H.R. LAMBERS 2,051, Anoecia fulviabdominalis SASAKI 1,480, * Aphis gossypii GLOVER 867, * Macrosiphum avenae FABRICIUS 859, Cervaphis quercus TAKAHASHI 692, * Lipaphis erysimi KALTENBACH 645, Pleotrichophorus chrysanthemi THEOBALD 489, The above 10 species consisted $76.5\%$ of total catches and the 24 vector species consisted $55.5\%$. The curve of the seasonal occurrence of flying aphids at Horticultural Experiment Station shows bimodal, typical for the temperate region. The total number of trapped aphids at the Station from May to September, 1970, were less than that of average yearly catches at the College of Agriculture from 1967 to 1970. Thi, low numbers at Horticultural Experiment Station may attribute to the frequent spraying of insecticides from Spring to Summer on growing crops there. But the aphids population increase suddenly in the middle of October. This might be resulted from cease of insecticide applications and migration of aphids from summer host to winter host plants.

  • High-Frequency Radar (HF-Radar) data of surface currents in Yeongil Bay (a semi-enclosed sea area of the East Sea) was used to investigate the between wind and horizontal surface currents The variation in horizontal and vertical flow of surface currents correlated closely to the water temperature time-series data of densely spaced (1 to 2 m) layers. During the time-series observation period, when the northeast wind prevailed over the entire Yeongil Bay area, a rapid rise in water temperature was recorded across all the layers. Moreover, currents parallel to the wind direction were clearly observed in low-frequency currents of the surface layer. Time-delayed correlation analysis between wind and surface current confirmed that if northeasterly wind blows in Yeongil Bay and continues unidirectionally, a southwestward surface current occured within a short period of time (1 to 2 hours). Convergence and divergence were calculated from the daily average values of low-frequency surface currents. A rapid rise in temperature occurred in the lower layers of water at the observation points, due to the convergence (downwelling) of the surface seawater (relatively high temperature water) associated with the northeasterly wind.

  • The Quaternary faults are extensively observed along major inherited fault zones (i.e. Yangsan Fault System, Ulsan Fault, Yeonil Tectonic Line, Ocheon Fault System) in SE Korea. Their geometry and kinematics provide a very useful piece of information about the Quaternary crustal deformation and stress field in and around Korean Peninsula. Using magnetic fabrics (AMS), we attempted to determine the slip senses of Jinti, Mohwa, Suseongji2, and Wangsan faults and then interpreted the fabric development process of fault gouge and the characteristics of stress field during the Quaternary. All the magnetic fabrics of the faults, except the Wangsan Fault, consistently indicate a dominant reverse-slip sense with weak strike-slip component. Most of the oblate fabrics are nearly parallel to the fault surface and the anisotropy degrees generally increase in proportion to the oblatenesses. These results suggest that the fabrics of the fault gouges resulted from a progressive deformation due to continuous simple shear during the last reactivation stage as reverse faulting. It is also interpreted that the pre-existing fabrics were overwhelmed and obliterated by the re-activated faulting. Paleostress field calculated from the fault slip data indicates an ENE-WNW compressive stress, which is in accord with those determined from previous fault tectonic analysis, focal mechanism solution, and hydraulic fracturing test in and around Korean Peninsula.
