Removal of nonaqueous phase liquid present in the soil column by using cosolvent floods was investigated. The first objective of the study was to elucidate the removal mechanism of cosolvent flooding for benzene-NAPL. The second objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of the alchohol partitioning type (NAPL swelling and non-swelling) and concentration on NAPL removal efficiency from the soil column. The main NAPL removal mechanism of swelling alcohol was mobilization, while that of non-swelling alcohol was NAPL dissolution. The NAPL removal efficiency of swelling alcohol was more effective than that of non-swelling alcohol. Removal of Benzene NAPL entrapped in the soil would be effective under the cosolvent flood condition of alcohol content greater than 40% in volume.
The mechanism of stone exfoliation and its cause in relation to chemical weathering by soluble salt were studied. Chemical, mineralogical and physical analysis was performed in exfoliation samples from stone monuments. The representative salt is gypsum in the exfoliation samples. In order to understand the salt reaction, stone samples(tuff and granite) were treated with two type of the salt, gypsum and sodium sulfate, which have different solubility. The capillary water uptakes are slight increased in impregnated with Na2SO4 and weathering simulation of two rock types. It means that the rock is deteriorated in the near of the surface by $Na_2SO_4$. $CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$ bring out the thicker exfoliation than $Na_2SO_4$ because it is penetrated into the deeper zone and amount of accumulated salt is more abundant in the inner part than in the near of the surface. The exfoliation was formed in the tuff by salt treatment and 30cycle of weathering simulation, but there are not significant symptoms of exfoliation in the granite by same condition. This result was caused by the different capillary water uptakes and porosity of the rocks. In the tuff, salt solutions are penetrated into the inner part due to its high capillary water uptakes and porosity but the granite, which has low value relatively, can be formed thinner exfoliation.

Clay soils typically have low hydraulic conductivities in the presence of high polarity pore fluid, such as water. Low polarity fluids, such as hydrocarbon fuels and halogenated organic solvents, typically cannot migrate into clay pores because they cannot displace the pore water. Oxygenated additives in gasoline, such as alcohols and methyl-tert-butyl ether, are increasingly used to control air pollution emissions. These relatively polar and highly water-soluble compounds may facilitate displacement of pore water and enhance migration of fuels and solvents through clay-rich soil strata. In the reported research, the migration of gasoline-alcohol fuel mixtures (gasohol) through consolidated clay was examined. Prepared kaolinite clay samples were consolidated from slurry, and various combinations of gasoline, alcohol, and water were applied to the clays under 152 Pa gauge pressure. Movement of the fluids into the clay samples was monitored by measur ing displaced pore fluid and by magnetic resonance imaging of the samples. The structures of selected samples were examined using environmental scanning electron microscopy. Results of the research suggest that alcohol added to hydrocarbon fuels can enhance migration through some clays significantly. Gasoline did not migrate appreciably into water saturated clay, even after 14 days under pressure. The gasohol mixture migrated readily into the clay in only 20 minutes. Increased hydraulic conductivity of the clay in the presence of gasohol is hypothesized to be due to the collapse of the clays pore structure when ethanol is present, creating larger pores. Increasing pore diameter decreases the capillary pressure needed for the gasohol to replace water and allows gasohol to migrate through the clay.

Nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL) are the continuous source for soil and groundwater contamination. The first objective of the study was to verify the effect of co-injection of cosolvent and air on NAPL removal from soil-column system. The second objective of the study was to investigate the effect of alcohol-partitioning property on the NAPL removal by the co-injection process of cosolvent and air. Enhanced removal of benzene-NAPL by the co-injection process of ethanol and air was also verified within the soilcolumn system. However, the co-injection process of Tert-butanol (TBA) and air showed no enhancement of benzene-NAPL removal. This study found that the viscous pressure of TBA was so higher than the capillary pressure and TBA easily displaced the benzene-NAPL and air present in soil pores. Air of the coinjection process did not work for NAPL removal but hindered NAPL mobilization. NAPL partitioning property and viscous pressure of cosovlent should be considered for application of the co-injection process of cosolvent and air.

In recent years, traditional scaffold fabrication techniques such as gas foaming, salt leaching, sponge replica, and freeze casting in tissue engineering have significantly limited sufficient mechanical property and cell interaction effect due to only random pores. Fused deposition modeling is the most apposite technology for fabricating the 3D scaffolds using the polymeric materials in tissue engineering application. In this study, 3D slurry mould was fabricated with a blended biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)/Silica/Alginic acid sodium salt slurry in PCL mould and heated for two hours at $100^{\circ}C$ to harden the blended slurry. 3D dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold, composed of macro pores interconnected with micro pores, was successfully fabricated by sintering at furnace of $1100^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology and 3D shape of dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold from scanning electron microscopy were observed. Also, the mechanical properties of 3D BCP/Silica scaffold, according to blending ratio of alginic acid sodium salt, were evaluated through compression test.

This paper reports experimental results, demonstrating the feasibility of horseradish peroxidase(HRP) and H$_2$O$_2$ to reduce phenol transport in saturated porous media. A laboratory-scale packed column reactor(ID: 4.1 cm, sand-bed height 12 cm) column was utilized to simulate injection of HRP and H$_2$O$_2$ into an aquifer contaminated with phenol. Effluent concentrations of phenol and polymerization products were monitored before and after enzyme addition under various experimental conditions(enzyme dose: 0$\sim$2 AU/mL, [ionic strength]: 5$\sim$100 mM, pH: 5$\sim$9). The concentration of phenol in the column effluent was found to decrease by nearly 90% in the presence of HRP(2 AU/mL) and H$_2$O$_2$ in the continuous flow system at pH 7 and ionic strength 20 mM. The influent phenol was converted in the system to insoluble precipitate, which deposited in pore spaces. The remains were discharged as soluble oligomers. About 8% of total pore volume in column system was decreased by deposition of polymer produced.
Laboratory experiments for the reaction with supercritical $CO_2$ under the $CO_2$ sequestration condition were performed to investigate the mineralogical and geochemical weathering process of the sandstones and mudstones in the Pohang basin. To simulate the supercritical $CO_2$-rock-groundwater reaction, rock samples used in the experiment were pulverized and the high pressurized cell (200 ml of capacity) was filled with 100 ml of groundwater and 30 g of powdered rock samples. The void space of the high pressurized cell was saturated with the supercritical $CO_2$ and maintained at 100 bar and $50^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. The changes of mineralogical and geochemical properties of rocks were measured by using XRD (X-Ray Diffractometer) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller). Concentrations of dissolved cations in groundwater were also measured for 60 days of the supercritical $CO_2$-rock-groundwater reaction. Results of XRD analyses indicated that the proportion of plagioclase and K-feldspar in the sandstone decreased and the proportion of illite, pyrite and smectite increased during the reaction. In the case of mudstone, the proportion of illite and kaolinite and cabonate-fluorapatite increased during the reaction. Concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ dissolved in groundwater increased during the reaction, suggesting that calcite and feldspars of the sandstone and mudstone would be significantly dissolved when it contacts with supercritical $CO_2$ and groundwater at $CO_2$ sequestration sites in Pohang basin. The average specific surface area of sandstone and mudstone using BET analysis increased from $27.3m^2/g$ and $19.6m^2/g$ to $28.6m^2/g$ and $26.6m^2/g$, respectively, and the average size of micro scale void spaces for the sandstone and mudstone decreased over 60 days reaction, resulting in the increase of micro pore spaces of rocks by the dissolution. Results suggested that the injection of supercritical $CO_2$ in Pohang basin would affect the physical property change of rocks and also $CO_2$ storage capacity in Pohang basin.
Weathering of biotite shows a biotite-vermiculite-kaolinite sequence at the early stage, but presents biotite-kaolinite sequence without a significant intermediate phase (vermiculite) at the late stage from the weathering profile of the granitic gneiss. Secondary 1:1 phyllosilicates are kaolinite and halloysite which show different weathering textures originated by a different formation mechanism. Kaolinitization began from the edges of biotite and propagated toward the interior of grain along a multilayered front. $10 \AA$ layers of biotite are interleaving with $7\AA$ layers of kaolinite and c-axis of two phases is consistent. Kaolinite pseudomorph of biotite is isovolumetric, compared to the biotite boundary and includes many band-like porosities parallel to the cleavage. Platy kaolinite formed by 1:1 layer fur layer replacement of biotite. Halloysitization proceeded outward from the grain edges which were foliated as fine flakes and bent at the right angle for cleavage Halloysites were extensively fanning out and greatly increased the volume of grain. This indicated that halloysite tubes were formed by epitaxial overgrowth on the surface of biotite with import of Si and Al from the external solution by dissolution of plagioclase. These halloysites have abnormally high Fe content ( ~11%).
A study on the elution characteristics of biostimulating agents (sulfate and nitrate) from biostimulants which are used for in-situ bioremediation for the coastal sediment contaminated with organic matter was performed. The biostimulating agents were mixed with the coastal sediment, and then massed the mixture into ball. Two kinds of ball type biostimulant were prepared by coating the ball surface with two different polymers, cellulose acetate and polysulfone. A granular type biostimulant (GTB) was also prepared by impregnating a granular activated carbon in the biostimulating agent solution. The image of scanning electron microscopy for the biostimulant coated with cellulose acetate (CAB) showed that the inner side of the coating layer consisted of irregular and bigger size of pores, and the surface layer had tight structure like beehive. For the biostimulant coated with polyfulfone (PSB), the whole coating layer had a fine structure without pore. The elution rate of the biostimulating agents for the CAB was higher than that for the PSB, and the elution rate for the GTB was considerably higher than that for the PSB in distilled water as well as in sea water. The elution rate of the biostimulating agents in turbulent water flow was about 3 times higher than that in standing water, and the elution rate of nitrate was higher than that of sulfate from the stimulating agents.
Weathering can reduce rock strength and eventually affect the structural stability of a rock mass, which is important in the field of engineering geology. Several methods have been developed to evaluate the degree of weathering, including the chemical weathering index. In this study, we analyzed the weathering degree and characteristics of microtextures and pores in crystalline rocks (gneiss and granites) based on petrographic observations, the chemical weathering index, mineralogy by XRD, microtextural analysis by SEM/EDS, measurements of pore size and surface area by the BET method, and microporosity by X-ray CT. The formation of secondary minerals and microtexture in gneiss and granitic rocks are assumed to be affected by complex processes such as dissolution, precipitation, and fracturing. Hence, it is clear that some chemical weathering indices that are based solely on whole-rock chemistry (e.g., CIA and CWI) are unable to provide reliable assessments of the degree of weathering. Great care is needed to evaluate the degree of chemical weathering, including an understanding of the mineralogy and microtexture of the rock mass, as well as the characteristics of micropores.
