  • The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model twisting and flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various twisting angles and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle($20^{\circ}$). And the effects of the twisting on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.

  • The instrumented capsule is subjected to flow-induced vibration(FIV) due to the flow of the primary coolant and then the structural integrity of the capsule during irradiation in the HANARO reactor is an issue of major concern. For this purpose the acceleration was measured by four accelerometers attached to the protection tube of the capsule mainbody and the displacement of test holes was calcultated using commercial finite element program ANSYS to evaluate the structural interference with the neighboring flow tubes under the reactor operating condition. The calculated displacements of test holes in the reactor in-core were found to be lower than the values of allowable design criteria.

  • This paper reports a peculiar example of flow-induced vibration in a very large plant and the whole procedure of reducing the vibration. During the operation of flue gas desurfurization unit of the thermal power plant, serious vibration was dtected at all around the plant. The worst vibration was recorded on the heat exchanger surface, which weighed 180 tones, as 17.8 m/$s^2$ in vibration amplitude at 34 Hz. To identify the vibration, frequency analysis on the response vibration as well as on the expected excitation forces and the system resonance was executed. This investigation revealed that the cause of the vibration was vortex shedding from the circular pipes in the heat exchanger. Vortices from the pipes excited acoustic resonance in the heat exchanger room, which, in turn, made the structure vibrate. Through inserting the baffles between the pipes, which had an effect of cutting the acoustic wave at resonance frequency, the vibration was eliminated dramatically.

  • During the operation, fatigue failures and cracks of duct plate due to excessive duct vibration occurred in the fan-duct systems of fossil fueled boilers. We measured static pressure variation(pressure pulsation) in the outlet, and also measured vibration at the outlet duct of a centrifugal fan. It was found that strong pressure pulsation caused by the inlet vortex occurred in inlet vane of centrifugal fan in the middle range of vane opening. Thus, excessive duct vibration is caused by strong pressure pulsation. In this paper, it is shown that the frequency and amplitude of pressure pulsation depend mainly on vane opening and are compared with duct vibration. Also, effective solution for reducing pressure pulsation and vibration are presented.

  • When vortex shedding is locked-on to a single frequency oscillatory flow, the variations of vortex dynamics are investigated using a time-resolved PIV system. Wake regions of recirculation and vortex formation, dynamic behavior of the shed vortices and the Reynolds stress fields are measured in the wake-transition regime at the Reynolds number 360. In the lock-on state, reduction of the wake region occurs and flow energy distributed downstream moves upstream being concentrated near the cylinder base. To observe the dynamic behavior of the shed vortices, the trajectory of the vortex center extended to the inside of the wake bubble is considered, which describes well the formation and evolution processes. The Reynolds stresses and their contributions to overall force balance on the wake bubble manifest the increase of the drag force by the lock-on.

  • We study time-periodic Taylor-Couette flow with the outer cylinder at rest and the inner one oscillating with a mean angular velocity. Varying the frequency of inner cylinder, we investigate the change of Taylor vortices at a given amplitude and a mean angular velocity. With a small frequency of modulation, we find that Taylor vortices appear and disappear periodically. With a higher frequency, Taylor vortices do not disappear, but the intensity of Taylor vortices modulates periodically. As the frequency increases, Taylor vortices modulate harmonically.

To describe a motion profile of wing tip such as elliptic, line and circle, the phase difference of flapping and lead-lag motion was changed. And the effects of the motion profile on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.

  • This study aimed to understand the internal flow characteristics of a liquid droplet subject to periodic forced vibration. In order to predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, a high-speed camera and macro lens were used to capture internal flow characteristics of a droplet placed on a vibrating hydrophobic surface. Results showed that the droplet assumed a variety of shapes depending on the resonance mode of free droplet, particularly in modes 2, 4, 6, and 8. In addition, the induced internal vortex flow inside the droplet was also observed in each mode. Typically, the induced flow moved upwards along the axis of symmetry and downwards along the surface of the droplet, that is, from the apex to the contact line in modes 2 and 4, after which it broke into a smaller vortex. On the other hand, the large-scale vortex always remained steady in modes 6 and 8. The speed of the flow in mode 4 was always greater than that in mode 2, but those in modes 6 and 8 were similar.

  • New dynamic analysis procedures lot the vertically drilled sea water pile are suggested and demonstrated by the typical design Problem. Pile structure submerged in the sea water as well as forces by the ocean waves and tidal currents are modeled and formulated by finite element method. To obtain wave forces for the finite element equation, Airy's wave theory is tested and selected among others. Lateral lifting forces induced by the vortex shedding of current flow is simply based on the harmonic function with the Strouhal frequency and lifting coefficient. Natural frequencies and frequency responses for the pile are calculated by NASTRAN using the results of the formulation. Dynamic displacement and stress results obtained by these procedures are shown to be applicable to predict the dynamic behaviors of the ocean pile by the wave and lifting forces as a preliminary design analysis.
