  • The aim of this paper is to examine satisfaction of residents and preference on the outdoor space's design by multi-family housing complex scale. So we divide outdoor space into space for green land, space for physical training and play, space for walking and space for rest and landscape facilities. The major findings of this analysis are follows : Multi-family housing complex scale is the bigger, it is recognized by same ratio on specific outdoor space in housing complex that are space for green land, space for physical training and play, space for rest and landscape facilities. And space for physical training and play is found commonly into the poorest space in housing complex. Evaluation for resident's perception on outdoor space by multifamily housing complex scale shows that housing complex scale is the bigger, resident's satisfaction is the lower. That means that housing complex of large scale can't satisfy the diverse resident's demand.

  • This study aimed to derive the concept and types of school outdoor spaces in Seoul. The research results showed that the concept of school outdoor space can be viewed as an outdoor activity space in schools that secures the value of integrated public life and communal life, including "behavioral rights, walking rights, living rights, urban rights, landscape rights (viewing rights), and nature experience rights." It can also be defined as a basic educational space that reflects the value of education, which is the basic function of schools and the characteristics of the community. As a result of the analysis based on the general types of outdoor spaces, it was found that the outdoor spaces of Seoul schools can be divided into three major categories: walking space (movement function), educational space (educational activities), and rest and other spaces (other services). Based on this, outdoor spaces were categorized and subcategorized to serve as the basis for policy implementation. These classifications are characterized by 1) simplifying the classification of spaces by function into three (movement functions, educational activities, and other services) to enable the use of outdoor spaces for integrated purposes; 2) reflecting the complex use of spaces by subdividing educational spaces focusing on major activities, and in particular, discovering complex spaces due to the three-dimensionalization of buildings; and 3) enabling spatial-level planning and facility element-level access according to school characteristics. It is characterized by applying the recent trends and systems of general outdoor space projects to the current situation of schools.

  • Outdoor spaces are used for recreation, rest area, and night activities of residents. By these tendency, outdoor space is recognized as a very important space in residental areas. However, outdoor space is frequently used at night but lighting plan for these spaces is not suited for the selection of luminairce, arrangement of luminaires and planing of illuminance. From this point of view, this paper investigated the essence of light in outdoor space, analyzed different outdoor luminous environment and performed simulations. This paper finally suggested recommended level of illuminance and lighting plan of such spaces.

  • The outdoor space of an elementary school is the most familiar and most educational area for children. A paradigm shift in education has demanded a new role and direction for these outdoor spaces. The construction of children-friendly spaces, however, lags behind. The child-participatory design process is very meaningful at a time when many outdoor spaces have difficulties in reflecting the varied and specific demands of children. This study realized the necessity for a design that includes a child-participatory design process in construction the outdoor spaces of elementary schools. Through reference study and a theoretical approach of related laws, this study established a child-participatory design process model and applied it to Seoul Don-Am Elementary School. The design process included playing games and providing interesting tools to increase the participation of children in suggesting and presenting their opinions more freely. The design process of this study is described in five steps(eliciting interest in and recognition of the target space, Understanding children's expectations and the expressing thereof, Establishing factors for planning, Visualizing and arranging spaces, and Decision-making and building a final design plan). This process was applied to the planning and design of an outdoor space for Seoul Don-Am Elementary School. In this study, it is clear that the design of the participators and experts have a different purpose. Thus, the process of the design has more meaning than the final product. In addition, it is expected that an improvement in both tangible and intangible designs will be seen. Using a participatory design process, this study successfully improved the facilities and arrangement planning of an outdoor space. At the same time, it also enhanced the interest and participation of children in the process of creating the kind of school they desire. The significance of this study is that it has suggested an effective model to reflect the demands of children, the true users of the outdoor space, and the results were actually applied to elementary school outdoor planning and designing. This study enhanced the awareness of school members in the process of building the school's outdoor space.

  • Prior studies have shown positive effects of outdoor activities on the elderly's physical, mental and social health. 'Active aging' and 'age-friendly' neighborhood can be created by modifying the experiences and perceptions of the outdoor environment. This study aims to investigate the outdoor activities of the elderly living in a low-income elderly concentrated area and their perception of the neighborhood environment. We also explored the context of interactions between the facilitators and inhibitors of outdoor activities on the basis of temporal, spatial, and social conditions. We used a mixed method approach by collecting two different types of qualitative GIS data : observation maps of the main places and individual cognitive maps with in-depth interviews. The observational map analysis indicated that the preferred places and activity patterns differ by age, gender, and size of the group. The cognitive map and interviews demonstrated that the elderly's activity goals and perception of the landscape differ by places such as forests, parks, streams, open-spaces, vegetable gardens, and alleys. The elderly's desire for outdoor activities can be better fulfilled when their front doors and alleys are well-connected to an open-sight pleasant space. Familiarity is an important factor for the elderly, therefore it is important to remove the psychological and physical barriers by increasing the legibility and accessibility of places. In addition, social interactions and conflicts can have a significant influence on the elderly's occupation of space in the neighborhood environment.

  • This study examined the integration value of a low level pilotis space, a component that has been often selected as an essential planning element of the recent high-rise apartment complex, and compared the main outdoor unit spaces with that of an average integration value of the individual complexes. Furthermore, this study provided the preliminary data for the next level of research, which is the observation of the pilotis space usage behaviors and the frequency of utilization. The results of this present research are as follows. First, from the main outdoor unit spaces of the high-rise apartment complexes including the pilotis space, a 'complex entrance' or a 'plaza' space showed the highest integration value. Second, the spatial integration value of a pilotis space in a high-rise apartment complex was generally lower that of the integration value of other main outdoor units. Third, from the pilotis spaces of the high-rise apartment complex, those with a 'projecting entry access + pilotis addition type' that did not provide an access to the individual units, had the lowest space utilization rate by the inhabitants; thus, had a high likelihood of the spaces becoming used for illegitimate activities or becoming vacant.
