  • A forced vibration model of a rail system was established using the Timoshenko beam theory to determine the dynamic response of a rail under time-varying load considering the damping effect and stiffness of the elastic foundation. By using a Fourier series and a numerical method, the critical velocity and dynamic response of the rail were obtained. The forced vibration model was verified by using FEM and Euler beam theory. The permanent deformation of the rail was predicted based on the forced vibration model. The permanent deformation and wear were observed through the experiment. Parametric studies were then conducted to investigate the effect of five design factors, i.e., rail cross-section shape, rail material density, rail material stiffness, containment stiffness, and damping coefficient between rail and containment, on four performance indices of the rail, i.e., critical velocity, maximum deflection, maximum longitudinal stress, and maximum shear stress.

  • In this study, a transfer matrix method in which can produce an infinite number of accurate natural frequencies using a single element for the bending vibration of rotating Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width, is developed. The roots of the differential equation in the proposed method are calculated using the Frobenius method in the power series solution. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, the calculated natural frequencies are compared with the results given by using the commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS), and the comparison results between these two methods show the excellent agreement. Based on the comparison results, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of the centrifugal forces on the non-dimensional natural frequencies for rotating beam with the variable width.

  • numerical study on the coupled fluid-structure for a rotor blade in hover was conducted. Computational fluid dynamics code with enhanced wake-capturing capability is coupled with a simple structural dynamics code based on Euler-Bernoulli's beam equation. The numerical results show a reasonable blade structural deformation and aerodynamic characteristics.

  • In this paper, new type of finite element models for the analysis of nonlinear beam bending are developed by using unconventional residual minimizing method to increase accuracy of finite element solutions and overcome some of computational drawbacks. Developing procedures of the new models are presented along with the comparison of the numerical results of existing beam bending models.

  • An iterative modal analysis approach is developed to determine the effect of transverse open cracks on the dynamic behavior of simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with the moving mass. The influences of the depth and the position of the crack in the beam have been studied on the dynamic behavior of the simply supported beam system by numerical method. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. As the depth of the crack is increased the frequency of the simply supported beam with the moving mass is increased.

  • The buckling characteristics of I - shaped columns which are composed of thin web and equal upper/lower flange plates are generally classified into the local and global modes. In this paper, its local buckling problem has been formulated on the basis of the assumed buckling modes using the finite element method for beams and plates. The effects of local bucklings are studied for various size rations and end conditions of I-shaped columns. The calculated results are comparatively well consistent with values obtained from the existing studies. The global buckling characteristics calculated by the present method are in good agreement with the classical rigid web solution

  • A transfer matrix method has been developed to determine the more accurate natural frequencies for the bending vibration of Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width and a concentrated tip mass. The proposed method can be computed an infinite number of the natural frequencies using a single element. Using the differential equation, shear force, and bending moment in which can be deduced by the diverse variational principles, a transfer matrix is formulated. The roots of the differential equation are computed by the Frobenius method. The effect of the concentrated mass for the natural frequencies of width-tapered beams is examined through a parametric study, and to show the accuracy of the proposed method, the computed results compared with those obtained from commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS).

The influences of the velocities of moving masses, the distance between the moving masses and a crack have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported beam system by numerical method. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. Totally, as the velocity of the moving masses and the distance between the moving masses are increased, the mid-span deflection of simply supported beam with the crack is decreased.

  • Various transition elements are generally used for the effective analysis of a complicated mechanical structure. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element which connects a continuum element and a $c^1-continuity$ beam element each other is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite elements, which a 8-noded hexahedral solid element fur 3D analysis and a 4-noded quadrilateral plane element fur 2D analysis are connected to a Euler's beam element, are explicitely formulated. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition elements. numerical tests are performed for various examples and their results are compared with those obtained by other methods. As the result of this study. following conclusions are obtained: (1)The proposed transition finite elements show the monotonic convergence characteristics because of having used the compatible displacement folds. (2)As being used the transition element in the finite element analysis, the finite element modelings are more convenient and the analysis results are more accurate because of the formulation characteristies of the Euler's beam element.
