  • When unsymmetrical surcharge is worked on polluted soft soils, large plastic shearing deformation such as settlements, lateral displacement, upheavals and shearing failure occured in the soils and they have often done considerable damages to the soils and structures. Accordingly, this study conducts laboratory pilots test to investigate the determination method of lateral flow pressure of polluted soft soils by comparing it to existing equations. The model test is performed that a model stock device is made and polluted soils are filled in a container which fires the soils. Then the displacement is observed as surcharge load is increased by regular intervals at untrained condition. The result shows that test the lateral flow pressure is adequately calculated by the equation (P=K$_{0}$YH) and the maximum value of lateral flow pressure Is found near 0.3H of layer thickness(H) and is higher to ground surface than synthesis pattern, Poulos distribution pattern and soft clay soils(CL, CH) which is not polluted.

  • Magnesia-carbon brick is used to refractory material in Converter and/or Ladle furnace for molten steel manufacturing. The rapid growth of steel making industry, molten steel industry is increased. Therefore, growth of molten steel industry lead to make waste magnesia-carbon brick by repair of Converter and/or Ladle furnace. These waste magnesia-carbon brick is abandoned all. Besides, as it is loosely composed of silt and clay including sand falling according to the type of gangue, rainwater inflows and outflows relatively easily, but silt or clay particles absorb water for a long period, weakening ground. This study tried to show that when colluvial soil is solidified using waste magnesia-carbon brick powder as a way to solidify strengthen the rigidity of colluvial soil.

  • Laboratory model test with soft silty ground (ML) and polluted silty ground with wastewater and factory waste oil ($ML_p$) was conducted and the applicability of changes of bearing capacity from the increase of pollutants was compared and analyzed with existing findings. As silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil had increased contents of pollutants, plasticization of ground was fostered compared to soft silt ground due to the influence of pollutants, and characteristics of ground strength decreased. Critical surcharge value of soft silty ground $q_{cr}=4.14c_u$, ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=9.53c_u$, critical surcharge value of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil $q_{cr}=1.78c_u$ and ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=4.39c_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capacity of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil were less than those of soft silty ground. It meant that shearing resistance due to the increase of pollutants decreased and rather a smaller value was obtained.

  • This study investigates the existing theoretical backgrounds for bearing capacity determination according to the plasticity of soils when unsymmetrical surcharge is loaded on polluted soft soils. It also investigates the behavior of the displacement and bearing capacity by unsymmetrical surcharge on the Polluted soft soils. by comparing the analytical results and the actual measurements performed through the model test. Model tests were carried out as follows : soil tank, bearing frame and bearing plate are made for the test ; the water content in soil tank was kept constant while the contaminants in natural soils and polluted material were gradually increased ; unsymmetrical surcharge is increased at regular intervals and then the amounts of settlement, lateral displacement and upheaval are observed. In conclusion, the value of critical surcharge was expressed as $q_{ cr}= 2.78_{Cu}$ which was similar to those $Tschebotarioff(q_{cr}=3.0_{Cu)$ and $Meyerhof(q_{cr}=(B/2H+\pi/2_{Cu})$ had proposed. The value of ultimate capacity was expressed as $q_{ult}=4.84_{Cu}$ which was similar to that of Prandtl.

  • This study investigates the existing theoretical backgrounds in order to examine the behavior of lateral flow according to the plasticity of soils when unsymmetrical surcharge is worked on polluted soft soils by comparing and analyzing the results measured through model tests. Model tests are canied out as follows soil tank, bearing frame and bearing plate are made. By increasing unsymmetrical surcharge to the ground soils with the consistent water content and with gradually increased polluted materials at intervals, the amounts of settlement, lateral displacement and upheaval were respectively observed. In conclusion, the value of critical surcharge was expressed as q$_{cr}$=2.78$_{cu}$ which was similar to those Tschebotarioff(q$_{cr}$=3.0$_{cu}$) and Meyerhof(q$_{cr}$=(B/2H+$\pi$/2)$_{cu}$) had been proposed. The value of ultimate capacity was expressed as q$_{ult}$=4.84$_{cu}$ which was similar to that of Prandtl. The lateral flow pressure is adeQuately calculated by the eQuation(P$_{max}$=K$_o$ r H) and the maximum value of lateral flow pressure is found near O.3H of layer thickness(H) and is higher to ground surface than the ones in composition pattern, Poulos distribution pattern and softclay soils (CL, CH) which is not polluted. The stability control method used in this research followed the management diagram of Tominaga.Hashimoto, Shibata.Sekiguchi, Matsuo.Kawamura who use the amounts of plasticity displacement by lateral flow. As a result, the ultimate capacity values in the diagram {S$_v$-(Y$_m$/S$_v$)} of Matsuo.Kawamura and in the diagram {(q/Y$_m$)-q} of Shibata. Sekiguchi were smaller than in the ones of load-settlement curve (q-S$_v$).

  • Although high pressure discharge method is widely used for improving soft ground, it has various problems including lack of strength increase and the possibility of water pollution and soil contamination. MJM(Morta Jet Method) uses sand in addition to cement as the injection material. MJM uses triple rods with a built-in nozzle that allows easier discharge of the slime, resulting in higher replacement area ratio and more uniform formation of pillar hydrates, and thus results in significant increase in strength. MJM is expected to perform especially well as piles in marine clays. This study investigates the field applicability of the MJM through extensive laboratory and field tests.

  • Due to the growth in industrialization, potential hazards in subsurface environments are becoming increasingly significant. The extraction of the contaminant from the soil and movement of the water are restricted due to the low permeability and adsorption characteristics of the reclaimed soils. There are a number of approaches to in-situ remediation that are used in contaminated sites for removing contaminants. These include soil flushing, dual phase extraction, and soil vapor extraction. Among these techniques, soil flushing was the focus of the investigation in this paper. Incorporated technique with PVDs has been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils for the purpose of ground improvement by means of prefabricated vertical drain systems. The laboratory model tests were performed by using the flushing tracer solutions for silty soils and recorded the tracer concentration changes with the elapsed time and flow rates. The modeling was intended to predict the effectiveness and time dependence of the remediation process. Modeling has been performed on the extraction, considering tracer concentration and laboratory model test characteristics. The computer model used herein are SEEP/W and CTRAN/W, this 2-D finite element program allows for modeling to determine hydraulic head and pore water pressure distribution, efficiency of remediation for the subsurface environment. It is concluded that the coefficient of permeability of contaminated soil is related with vertical velocity and extracted flow rate. The vertical velocity and extracted flow rate have an effect on dispersivity and finally are played an important role in-situ soil remediation.

  • Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is an effective and cost efficient method of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and petroleum hydrocarbons from unsaturated soils. Incorporating PVDs in an SVE system can extend the effectiveness of SVE to lower permeability soils by shortening the air flow-paths and ultimately expediting contaminant removal. With this approach, the real bounded system is replaced for the purposes of analysis by an imaginary system of infinite areal extent. The boundary conditions for the contaminant remediation model test include constant head and no flow condition. Due to these parallel boundaries conditions, image wells should be developed in order to maintain the condition of no flow across the impermeable boundary. It is also assumed that the flow is drawdown along the constant head boundary condition. The factors contributing to the difference between the theoretical and measured pressure heads were also analyzed. The flow factor increases as the flow rate is increased. The flow rate is the most important factor that affects the difference between the measured and theoretical pressure heads.
