Inhibitory Effect of Omisodok-eum on the Secretion of NO in LPS-stimulated Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages (오미소독음이 마우스 복공 대식세포에서 NO의 분필과정에 미치는 영향)

  • Inflammation is localized response to foreign substance such as bacteria or in some instance to internally produced substances and has relation with immunity system. The macrophages plays a role in the development of the Iymphohaemopoietic system before and after birth, as well as in the natural and acquired immune responses of adult to immunogens, including infectious agents. NO have been suggested to play an important role in endotoxin-mediated shock and imflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of Omisodok-eum on the production of NO. The Omisodok-eum inhibited the secretion of NO in LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages, without affecting cell viability. The protein level of inducible nitric oxide synlhase(iNOS) in peritoneal macrophages was also decreased by Omisodok-eum. These results suggest that Omisodok-eum suppresses the endotoxin-induced inflammatory responses through inhibiting the production of NO

A Study on the Intonational Patterns in English Information Structures (영어 정보구조의 억양양상에 관한 연구)

  • Many researchers have argued about the relationship between information structure and intonation. Their results can be summarized in three main points: the intonation of topic and focus in English information structures is implemented as i) a pitch accent, ii) a tune (a pitch accent + (an) edge tone(s)), or iii) a boundary tone. The purpose of this paper is to study various intonational patterns of topic and focus in English information structures, using natural conversations. In this paper, the types of topics and foci are divided, based on contrastiveness. The topics are classified as five non-contrastive and four contrastive topics. The foci are classified as neutral focus, informational focus, and contrastive focus. The results show that the intonation of the topic in English information structures is mainly implemented as a pitch accent, except for the type of the pronoun topic (Lp) which is not implemented as a pitch accent or a tune. However, the intonation of the focus is implemented as a tune in the neutral focus (Fn) and as a pitch accent or a tune in the informational focus (Fi) and the contrastive focus (Fe). In our discussion and conclusion, we suggest that it is not always true that for the meaning of contrast, the topic or the focus is represented as a $L+H^{\ast}$ pitch accent, which has been the main contrastive intonation from earlier studies.

Comparison of Functions for Filtering Time Course Gene Expression Data with Flat Patterns (무 변화 패턴을 갖는 시간경로 유전자발현자료를 제거하기 위한 함수들의 비교)

  • Filtering genes that do not appear to contribute to regulation prior to the statistical analysis of time course gene expression data can reduce the dimensions of data and the possibility of misinterpretation due to noise or lack of variation. In this paper, we compare six different functions for filtering genes with flat pattern under the percentile criterion on an observed sample and that on a bootstrap sample. The result of applying to the yeast cell cycle data shows that the variance function is most similar in both samples.

The Production of Stops by Seoul and Yanbian Korean Speakers

  • This study investigates dialectal differences in the acoustic properties of Korean lenis, aspirated, and tense stops Seoul Korean (standard Korean) and Yanbian Korean (spoken in the largest Korean Autonomous Prefecture in China). This production study the main acoustic cues that each dialect uses to mark the laryngeal distinction between the three types of Korean stops. Measurements included VOT, and the initial F0 of the following vowel. Data collected from 10 young Seoul Korean speakers, 10 young Yanbian Korean speakers, and 6 older Yanbian speakers. two key findings: First, aspirated and lenis stops are mainly differentiated by F0 in Seoul Korean, and by $H1^*-H2^*$ in Yanbian Korean. Second, there is no VOT merger between lenis and aspirated stops in Yanbian Korean, whereas there is in Seoul Korean. These results are discussed in terms of the phenomenon of VOT shift and the function of F0t is argued that the function of F0 to substitute for VOT difference as a primary cue for the coding of laryngeal contrast can be predicted by the pitch accent system of the language involved.

  • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immunologically-mediated disease resulting from repeated exposure to sensitizing agents, such as organic dusts or chemicals. Isocyanate is a volatile and highly reactive chemical that is extensively used in the manufacturing of automobiles, upholstery, and polyurethane foam. Occupational respiratory diseases associated with isocyanate, such as bronchial asthma, are well-known. It is thought that HP is one of the rare diseases induced by isocyanate with a very low frequency worldwide. We report a case of HP in an automobile painting sprayer which appeared to be associated with isocyanate.

  • In this paper, we use Bayesian method for model selection of poisson vs. negative binomial distribution, and normal, double exponential vs. cauchy distribution. The fractional Bayes factor of O'Hagan (1995) was applied to Bayesian model selection under the assumption of noninformative improper priors for all parameters in the models. Through the analyses of real data and simulation data, we examine the usefulness of the fractional Bayes factor in comparison with intrinsic Bayes factors of Berger and Pericchi (1996, 1998).

Volatile Compounds of Essential Oils from Allium senescens L. var. senescens (재배 두메부추로부터 추출한 정유의 휘발성 성분 분석)

  • $Dumebuchu$ ($Allium$ $senescens$ L. var. $senescens$) has a peculiar and long-lasting odor that resembles the flavor of garlic and onions. This study was conducted to examine the volatile compounds of essential oils extracted from $dumebuchu$. The essential oils of $dumebuchu$ were extracted by hydrodistillation using a clavenger-type apparatus and analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 25 compounds were identified in the essential oils from $dumebuchu$. Among sulfur-containing compounds, 4 disulfides and 3 trisulfides were identified. The most abundant sulfur-containing compound was 5-dimethylthiophene (peak area 41.15%) and the second and the third most abundant compound were dipropyl disulfide (18.91%) and propyl allyl disulfide (12.23%), respectively.

The Effects of Mathematics Education Program Utilizing Food on 4-Year-Old Children's Mathematical Ability (먹거리를 활용한 유아 수학교육 프로그램이 만 4세 유아의 수학능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Objective: The purpose of the study was to develop a mathematics education program utilizing food to improve the mathematical abilities of 4-year-olds and to analyze the effects of this program on 4-years-olds' mathematical concepts (number and operation, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability). Methods: The study selected 30 4-year-olds from two daycare centers located in K city. The experimental group (N=15) participated in the mathematics education program utilizing food, 10 times for five weeks, while the comparative group (N=15) participated in the seasonal mathematics education program based on the Nuri Curriculum. The activities of this intervention program were designed to cover all domains of Mathematical Exploratory areas in the Nuri Curriculum. For data processing and analysis, pre-test and post-test score differences between the two groups were analyzed through MANCOVA. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher scores on five mathematical concepts compared with the control group. A mathematics education program utilizing food had the positive effect of improving 4-year-olds' mathematical ability. Conclusion/Implications: Mathematic education programs utilizing food are recommended as necessary pedagogical data to develop the mathematical abilities of children in education centers, families, or relating to parenting education.
