  • This article studies the understanding of acid and base concepts of the 3rd-grade students in middle school. An effective teaching strategy for improving their acid and base concepts was designed by considering students' prior knowledge using Lawson's learning cycle method. The control group was adapted by the traditional teaching strategy which isn't considering students' prior knowledge. After the class, understanding of acid and base concepts of treatment group was significantly higher than that of control group. But the level of students' understanding of strong acid, weak acid strong base and the strength of acid in aqueous solution was low even after the class of two groups. This indicates indirectly that the microscopic views of acid and base concepts in aqueous solution are not easy to learn for these students. For the four categories of acid and base concepts, students' responses were reviewed carefully and classified into scientific conceptions and misconceptions. These results will be useful for developing an effective teaching strategy of acid and base concepts.

  • In this study, we identified the conceptions of heat and temperature on a basis of the science history, and analyzed the explanation types in elementary, and secondary school science textbooks. From these data, we tried to discover the cause of students' misconceptions. The results revealed that the explanation types of the textbooks don't include modem sight. Different conceptions developed in different era mixed in the textbooks. We can infer that students who learn heat and temperature concept by the textbooks could have misconceptions because of the above problems.

  • A learner's cognitive conflict with his /her existing conception is regarded to be one of the most important factors for a conceptual change. In this study, the effects of the conflict situation types on inducing students' cognitive conflicts in Newton's law were examined. The thirty-four students of 10th grade were selected from a rural high school based on the result of pre-test. The two different types of conflict situations among many possible types were used in this study. One type was using logical conflict situation and the other was demonstrating real conflict situation. The levels of cognitive conflict were measured by 4-point Likert scale by three interviewers. As the results, the demonstration method was more effective than the logical argument method. In case of the logical argument method, rather than showing scientific conceptions, suggesting another misconception was more effective to the students who have misconception. However, logical argument method was not effective to those who have scientfic conceptions. To the students who have unscientific conceptions, the demonstration method was very effective for inducing cognitive conflict. From the results of this study, demonstration method of teaching seems to be very effective for inducing students' cognitive conflict and overcoming their misconceptions on scientific concept.

  • This study was aimed to understand the problems that students experience during the self--directed study of a mathematics digital textbook and to find the implications for the design of digital textbook. For this study, we analyzed the process of self-directed learning on 'division of fractions with same denominator' using digital textbook by eight 6th graders. Students asked to use think aloud method while they study the unit. Their learning process was videotaped and analyzed by researchers after the experiment. After the self-directed learning, students filled out a test items and participated interview with a researcher. The result showed that students experienced several misconceptions and errors while using a digital textbook. The types of misconceptions and errors were cataegorized as "misconceptions and errors caused by a mathematics textbook" and "misconceptions and errors caused by a digital textbook". Especially, students showed several important misconceptions and errors because of the design factors. This implies we need to consider the causes of misconceptions for the design of a digital textbook.

  • In this study, we developed a rubric for assessing middle school students' conceptual understanding about dew point. For this purpose, we analyzed 9th grade students' responses collected by using a multi-tiers constructed-response item of National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) and classified the types of the responses according to their characteristics. In addition, we analyzed the distribution of student response types according to mean achievement scores and developed an assessment rubric of conceptual understanding about dew point. The findings are as follows: First, the analysis of student responses to finding dew point in the saturation curve showed that many students had no or lack understanding of the scientific concept of dew point. Second, as a result of analyzing the student response to the water vapor condensation process at dew point, the proportion of scientific conception types was very low, while the proportion of misconception types was relatively high and the types varied as well. Third, a four- level assessment rubric was developed based on the analysis of the distribution of student response types according to the mean achievement scores. Based on the findings, we suggested the development and utilization of assessment rubric in the field of Earth science education.

  • study investigated the relationship between conceptual understanding and mapping errors induced in learning chemistry concept with two analogies presented in current science textbooks. Each of the two groups from 7th graders (N=260) in three middle schools studied with one of the analogies, and then a conception test and a mapping test were administered. Analyses of the results indicated that students conceptual understanding has a significant relationship with their understanding about the mapping. The scores of the conception test and the mapping test for the unshared attributes were lower than those for the shared attributes. Five types of mapping errors were also identified: overmapping, mismapping, failure to map, rash mapping, and artificial mapping. Many representative misconceptions were found to be associated with their mapping errors. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Conditional probability may look simple but it raises various misconceptions. Preceding studies are mostly about such misconceptions. However, instead of focusing on those misconceptions, this paper focused on what the mathematical essence of conditional probability which can be applied to various situations and how good teachers' understanding on that is. In view of this purpose, this paper classified conditional probability which have different ways of defining into two-relative conditional probability which can be get by relative ratio and if-conditional probability which can be get by the inference of the situation change of conditional event. Yet, this is just a superficial classification of resolving ways of conditional probability. The purpose of this paper is in finding the mathematical essence implied in those, and by doing that, tried to find out how well teachers understand about conditional probability which is one integrated concept.
