  • Two different aquifers with different characteristics developed in the study area - a lower and upper aquifer zone. Nitrate contamination of the lower aquifer zone was likely due to infiltration of nitrate-contaminated groundwater of the upper aquier zone through abandoned groundwater wells. In order to evaluate the feasibility of a preliminary packer designed to prevent nitrate migration through abandoned groundwater wells NO3-N concentrations of the upper and lower part of preliminary packer installed at four sampling sites were measured. Nitrate concentrations of the and lower part of Yechun sinwolri were 10.3 mg/L and 5.0 mg/L, respectively. Yechun eosinri, Yechun jeowooriis, and Andong hoegokri were $NO_3$-N concentrations in the upper (11.3, 11.0, and 14.6 mg/L) and lower (8.8, 1.6, and 8.0 mg/L), respectively. $NO_3$-N contents of all groundwater samples in the lower part after the preliminary packer installation showed 22~85% lower than those of the upper part.

  • Effects of chemical properties of cultivation soils on the growth and quality of garlics were investigated. Garlics were cultivated in Uisung and Yechun, one of the major areas of garlic production, where upland and paddy fields have been used for garlic production for many years. Contents of phosphate, sulfur and potassium in the soils of paddy fields were relatively higher than those in the soils of upland fields, suggesting that the accumulation of inorganic salts has been progressed in the paddy fields. Soils of Uisung area showed higher pH s and lower contents of available phosphate compared to those of Yechon area. This result implies that the soils of Uisung area provide somewhat better chemical properties for garlic growth than those of Yechun area. Contents of inorganic salts such as phosphate, potassium and magnesium in the soils significantly affected the growth and quality of garlics. Garlics grown in the soils with lower contents of these inorganic salts exhibited better growth status and contained more pyruvate. More pyruvate was found in the garlics grown in upland fields than in paddy fields. Therefore, it is apparent that the accumulation of inorganic salts, especially available phosphate, in cultivation soils leads to the inhibition of garlic growth and in turn to the deterioration of garlic quality.

  • Characterstics, genesis and classification of soils derived from coarse grain granitic materials were discussed with four soil series, such as Samgag, Sangju. Sachon and Yecheon which were distributed over the area of Gangdae-Ri, Nengseo-Myeon, Yeoju-Gun, Gyunggi-Do. The results are as follows. 1. Samgag, Sangju, Sachon and Yecheon had a soil of excessively, well, imperfectly and poorly drained, thus they had a soil drainage sequence. 2. Soil textural class were from sandy loam to loam. Silt and clay content were increased with descending to the local bottom, while sand content was decreased. 3. Soils were very strongly to strongly acid and OM, CEC, exchangeable cation, and available $P_2O_5$ in soils seemed to be increased with ascending to the local boctom. 4. Kaolinite and Quartz were the dominant clay mineral and the other was Vermiculite and Illite. 5. Samgag was classified as Typic Dystrochrepts, Sangju as Dystric-Fluventic Eutrochrepts, Sachon as Aeric-Fluventic Halpaquepts, and Yecheon as Fluventic Haplaquepts.

  • Twelve garlic cultivars collected from Korea and Mongolia were evaluated genetic similarity and diversity by RAPD method using oligo-nucleotide random primers. Genomic DNA isolated from twelve garlic cultivars were amplified by polymerase chain reaction using 143 primers, and 55 primers showed polymorphic DNA bands. Among a total of 187 bands amplified by 55 primers, 128 polymorphic bands were subjected to analysis for genetic relationship of garlic cultivars. Garlic cultivars were classified into three groups, such as group-I corresponded to Euiseong, Seosan, Samchuk and Yecheon-A, Yechun-B, Euiseong-norang, Jeongsun, Namdo, Yookback and Danyang cultivars, and group-II to Mongolia and group-III to Daeseo cultivars. Thirty DNA bands showing unique specificity to the specific cultivars are likely to be useful for identification of garlic local cultivars as DNA markers.

  • The Yechon shear zone developed by strike-slip movement was formed in a relatively high temperature condition just after the Jurassic syntectonic granites had been emplaced during Daebo Orogeny. Post-emplacement formation of the shear zone is favored by continuity of foliations and lineations within and without the granites, development of mylonitic structures in the wallrocks, deformation of pegmatite and felsite dikes, and pretectonic growth of porphyroblasts in the wallrocks. A variety of shear sense indicators in the shear zone are predominantly observed in the intensely to extremely deformed rocks. They show that bulk non-coaxial detormation has occurred, and that the sense of shear is consistently dextral with S-C fabrics, grain shape fabrics, asymmetric porphyroclast systems, mica fish, asymmetric extension structures and quartz C-axis fabrics.

  • Rb-Sr isotopic ages of oxidized biotite in the weathering profile of granodiorite, Yecheon area, were measured by thermal ionization mass spectrometry, and compared with their K-Ar ages. A decrease of Rb-Sr isotopic age is well correlated with iron oxidation, and consistent with K-Ar age. Octahedral and interlayer cations including Rb and Sr were partly released from the oxidizing biotite by excess positive charge from iron oxidation. Divalent /sup 87/Sr decayed from monovalent /sup 87/Rb was more easily released from biotite, resulting in the reduction of Rb-Sr isotopic age. Weathered biotite is not suitable for the age dating of parent rocks, but behaviour of radiogenic isotopes provides useful information on the geochemical and structural changes of biotite during weathering.

  • The Precambrian granitic gneisses are widely distributed in the Danyang-Yecheon area, eastern part of Korea, where the Ryeongnam massif borders the Ogcheon fold belt. They are composed of migmatitic, biotite granitic, garnet-bearing and granoblastic granitic gneisses. The common joint sets of the granitic gneiss are NE and NS directions, which are probably related to the effects of Daebo orogeny and Bulgugsa disturbance, respectively. Mineral assemblages of the banded gneiss xenolith in the garnet-bearing granitic gneiss are quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-mus-covite-orthoclase and quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-garnet, belonging to the amphibolite facies. The granoblastic granitic gneiss is felsic, metaluminous, and granitic, and shows subalkaline trend. The garnet-biotite geothermometry of garnet-bearing granitic gneiss yields 640$^{\circ}$-708$^{\circ}C$ at pressure of 4 kb.

  • In this study, sieve analysis testing was performed on weathered granite soil from Yecheon (eastern South Korea) before and after water washing in accordance with the sieve analysis regulations of KS F 2302. The changes in particle separation and particle size distribution after washing with water were analyzed. Image analysis using an optical microscope revealed that soil particles were separated into smaller particles by water washing. The change in the particle size distribution curve was assessed using five index values. The increase in the fine particle fraction (<0.075 mm) was 13.67%, the increase in the 0.075-0.25 mm fraction was 19.44%, and the mean particle diameter (D50) decreased by 0.663 mm. In addition, the maximum passage width (BM) of the particle size distribution curve increased by 21.08% for the #30 sieve, and the moving area (A) of the particle size distribution curve was 69.28%·mm. These results suggest that washing with water is an effective way to prevent underestimation of the fine particle content in soil.
