  • This paper proposes a method to determine the initial equilibrium state of cable members for preliminary analysis of multi-span suspension bridge under dead load. The proposed method is simpler and more practical than the previous methods used in other studies. The proposed method can be applied to three-span or multi-span suspension bridges. To verify the proposed method, an three-span model as well as four-span models such as New Millenium Bridge in Korea and Yingwuzhou Bridge in China are analyzed. In the verification results, the initial coordinates and tensions of the members calculated by the proposed method are good agreement with those in the previous study for the three-span model and those in the design data of New Millenium Bridge. In addition, the proposed method gives the initial values to keep the initial configuration of Yingwuzhou Bridge.

  • Most components in the real world show nonlinear response. The nonlinearity may arise because of contact between the parts, nonlinear material, or large deformation of the components. Structural optimization considering nonlinearities is fairly expensive because sensitivity information is difficult to calculate. To overcome this difficulty, the equivalent load method was proposed for nonlinear response optimization. This method was originally developed for size and shape optimization. In this study, the equivalent load method is modified to perform topology optimization considering all kinds of nonlinearities. Equivalent load is defined as the load for linear analysis that generates the same response field as that for nonlinear analysis. A simple example demonstrates that results of the topology optimization using equivalent load are very similar to the numerical results. Nonlinear response topology optimization is performed with a practical example and the results are compared with those of conventional linear response topology optimization.

  • In the health monitoring of civil engineering structures, the optimal sensor placement has a major influence on the quality of the results. This paper considers the problem of locating sensors with the aim of maximizing the data information so that structural parameters or damage of structures can be assessed. An proposed technique using a genetic algorithm is introduced to find the optimal placement of sensors. The sensitivity on modal vectors by structural parameters and the orthogonality of modal vectors have been taken as the fitness function of the genetic algorithm. A simple tower structure is used for example analyses to investigate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed approach. The example analyses show the way how the modal sensitivity and the modal orthogonality in the fitness function have influence on the optimal sensor placement. It is shown that the present method using the proposed fitness function can provide the reliable results.

  • Recently, XML has been emerging as a standard for storing and exchanging of data for various distributed applications based on the Internet. Since there are increasing demands to store and manage XML documents, a lot of research works are going on this area to develop new took and techniques based on the XHL. However, most of the researches are concentrated on mapping techniques based on instance or DTD, and the main focus is on structural transformation. Current trend of research is toward the usage of XML documents based on XML schema, and demands not only conversion of structure but also preservation of the semantic constraints. This paper sets up the using of DIDL standing on the basis of XML schema from MPEG-21 as an application domain, and proposes the mapping model that can preserve semantic constraints in addition. We expand previous research techniques in the preprocessing step for the specific domain, and then, apply various new mapping methods in the postprocessing step. We present and discuss the system architecture for implementation, and introduce the algorithms and present implementation environment and semantic extension methodology in detail. Finally we show actual table and query processing based on our proposal.

  • Design Axiom proposed by N. P. Such consists of Independence Axiom & Information Axiom. Based on the Independence Axiom, it is very useful specially for early design stage such as conceptual design to generate the design alternatives by considering both functions and structures of product. Since the Information Axiom shows that the design solution should have a least information to be the best one among the many alternatives, this axiom can be used for the best selection purpose during the preliminary design stage. In this paper, the possibility of Design Axiom in marine design application is checked by carrying out three examples of marine design. In the conceptual design of thruster, it is proven to use the Independence Axiom very effective by relating directly functional requirements with design parameters, one by one. In main engine selection example, Information Axiom is used to select best solution among alternatives by choosing the one having the minimum information quantity. For similarity based design in which the selection of changing design variables and the amount of those are important, it is proved that design axiom applied to Barge design case would be very effective and useful. As functional requirements and constrains were not clarified in early design stage, design axiom shows some difficulty for larger system design like ship which is basically carried out by an incremental and iterative process.

  • In this study, a finite element (FE) model updating method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) is proposed to improve the grillage FE model for plate girder bridges. HGA consists of a genetic algorithm (GA) and direct search method (DS) based on a modification of Nelder & Mead's simplex optimization method (NMS). Fitness functions based on natural frequencies, mode shapes, and static deflections making use of the measurements and analytical results are also presented to apply in the proposed method. In addition, a multi-objective function has been formulated as a linear combination of fitness functions in order to simultaneously improve both stiffness and mass. The applicability of the proposed method to girder bridge structures has been verified through a numerical example on a two-span continuous grillage FE model, as well as through an experimental test on a simply supported plate girder skew bridge. In addition, the effect of measuring error is considered as random noise, and its effect is investigated by numerical simulation. Through numerical and experimental verification, it has been proven that the proposed method is feasible and effective for FE model updating on plate girder bridges.

  • The wall system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs is adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed. In the apartment buildings, a shear wall may have one or mote openings for functional reasons. Many researches on the analysis of shear wall with openings were performed. But, some restrictions prevent those research results being applied to practical analysis and design procedure. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements lot accurate analysis of the wall system with openings. But it would cost tremendous amount of analysis time and computer memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analysis method which can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study. The analysis method uses super element, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Analyses of example structures having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

  • In this paper, the optimal seismic design method for inducing the beam-hinge collapse mechanism of steel moment frames is presented. This uses the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II(NSGA-II) as an optimal algorithm. The constraint condition for preventing the occurrence of plastic hinges at columns is used to induce the beam-hinge collapse mechanism. This method uses two objective functions to minimize the structural weight and maximize the dissipated energy. The proposed method is verified by the application to nine story steel moment frame example. The minimum column-to-beam strength ratio to induce the beam-hinge collapse mechanism are investigated based on the simulation results. To identify the influence of panel zone on the minimum column-to-beam strength ratio, three analytic modeling methods(nonlinear centerline model without rigid end offsets, nonlinear centerline model with rigid end offsets, nonlinear model with panel zones) are used.

  • Accurate identification of damping matrix in structures is very important for predicting vibration responses and estimating parameters or other characteristics affected by energy dissipation. In this paper, damping matrix identification method that use normal frequency response functions, which were estimated from complex frequency response functions, is proposed. The complex frequency response functions were obtained from the experimental data of the structure. The nonproportional damping matrix was identified through the proposed method. Two numerical examples (lumped-mass model and cantilever beam model) were considered to verify the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the damping matrix of the nonproportional system was accurately identified.
