However, major discount store companies have problems in terms of poor ROIC ratios in spite of their rapid growth for the last decade. The results of ROIC performance of 3 major department stores and 3 discount stores are compared and the implications of the study are discussed. Furthermore, the published accounting data of major U.S. department stores and discount stores are analyzed in the context of benchmarking for Korean companies.

  • Social interest in occupational safety and health is increasing due to ESG management and the implementation of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. This study examines the current status of occupational accidents, which is the safety level of energy companies, and the impact of occupational accidents on the management performance (sales per capita, operating profit per capita, operating margin per capita) of energy companies over the period of 2015 to 2021 was empirically analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the level of occupational accidents in the 157 energy companies to be analyzed was lower than the occupational injury accident rate in Korea, but the disease rate was high.As a result of analyzing the impact of occupational accidents on management performance, it is estimated that an increase in the occupational accident rate reduces per capita sales, per capita operating profit, and gross margin rate.Through this study, the vulnerability of energy companies to occupational accidents was confirmed, and the direct and indirect costs of occupational accidents quantified the negative impact on management performance.Referring to the results of this study, energy companies should strengthen their efforts to prevent occupational accidents by increasing investment in safety and health to protect the lives of valuable workers and create sustainable business performance.

  • The purpose of this study is verifying which financial property of a venture company listed in KOSDAQ is a primary factor to determine Highly Successful company or Less Successful one. For sampling, I classified 405 venture companies, whose averages for 2005 of 2 standards are In the 30% high/low rank, as Highly Successful/Less Successful companies subject to the higher Operating Income to Total Assets and Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), the Highly Successful company. And I verified which variable is most important one to distinguish between Highly Successful companies and Less Successful ones among 24 financial ratios selected through preceding studies. For the analysis, I firstly extracted analogous variables by Stepwise Method and secondly carried out Multi variate Discriminant Analysis. The result mainly shows variables related to returns and stability similar to preceding studies. Especially, Operating Income to Total Assets reveals most reliable variable distinguishing between Highly Successful company and Less Successful one, whereas Current Ratio does not. When reliability of function formula of variables were compared with Operating Income to Total Assets standard and ROIC standard, there was almost no difference.

  • In this study, how international diversification of domestic companies increases corporate profits and increases the dividend income of paid-in capital investors, who provided the basis for corporate business activities in the process of distributing profits. I tried to find out if it had an effect. An empirical analysis was conducted using a fixed-effect model for companies with settlements at the end of December listed on the domestic securities market from 2011 to 2018. It was confirmed that the higher the level of international diversification of individual companies, the higher the company's dividend payout ratio and dividend yield. This means that companies can steadily expand corporate profits and dividend yield of shareholders by securing new overseas markets through international diversification, it can be seen that a company's international diversification strategy can contribute to the increase of corporate value by increasing the company's dividend payout ratio by increasing dividendable profit.

To achieve the study purpose we analyzed the differences of management performance of hotels, travel agencies and airlines before and after Mers occurrence. As the result of analysis, there were significant differences in the variables of profit margin ratio before income taxes and operating profit ratio as a profit index before and after Mers occurrence in the hotel firms. And in case of travel agencies, there were significant differences in the variables of debt to equity ratio and borrowings dependence ratio as a stability index before and after Mers occurrence. Lastly there were significant differences in the variables of operating profit ratio as a profit index and total assets turnover ratio as an activity index before and after Mers occurrence in the airlines. Therefore the managers should find an way to reduce the negative image of plague through the effective marketing strategy.

  • In Korea, the standard for calculating the profit of a general insurance, which constitutes the loading in the premium, is not specified, and most of the non-life insurance companies reflect 2~5% of the premium as profit margin. Although the transparency of pricing is required due to the nature of insurance products, there are insufficient standards and empirical studies on the determination of insurance price factors in the domestic insurance industry. In this study, we propose a method of calculating the expected profit margin of general insurance. A way for calculating the expected profit margin of the general insurance is to reflect the shareholder demand on the capital that the insurance company should secure against the risk of loss due to the profit/loss volatility, as a ratio to the insurance premium. Shareholders should be compensated for the risks associated with their insurance operations, and the opportunity cost of these shareholders is to be reflected in premiums. In this study, we calculate the amount of capital that the company should accumulate to prepare insurance risk for each product, and insurance risk is defined as the volatility of insurance operating profit/loss. And insurance risk is calculated using stochastic simulation based on Dynamic Financial Analysis (DFA) methodology. Finally, we calculate the expected profit margins for 25 products and analyzed the difference between those and the profit ratio of domestic general insurance.

  • With the growing number of emerging carmakers, automotive parts manufacturers have to penetrate into emerging markets. They can provide large existing carmakers with fully customized parts because of economies scale, but cannot do this for small emerging carmakers due to their small and highly volatile volume order. Once the order by an emerging carmaker is placed, a part manufacturer is exposed to high risks both of decrease in profit margin and high opportunity cost. The platform-based mass customization can be a solution for cost reduction, but the risks of volatility in volume hard to manage. Tackling this issue, we presents a method of optimizing the product portfolio to maximize profits while managing volatility of volume order by emerging carmakers at an affordable level. It is the first robust product portfolio method to keep the scaled deviation of profits at a fixed level under volume order uncertainty. Also, the effect of on the platform-based mass customization on cost is considered. This model can be a building block of conservative market penetration as well as product development strategy while minimizing the financial risks. We conducted an empirical study of a part manufacturer targeting on eighteen automobile manufacturers in North America, Europe and Asia with it powered lift gate.

  • Many of previous studies suggested that working capital management is an important component of firm's financial decision and efficient working capital management affects firms' profitability and it's value. Recently, Korean shipping firms have been suffering from financial distress by recession of shipping economy. In this point of view, this study tries to investigate the relationship between working capital management and shipping firm's profitability, using panel data on 46 Korean shipping firms for the period of 2004-2013. As result of panel regression, it proved that average payment period, inventory turnover, cash conversion cycle and operating cycle are significantly associated with firms profitabilities such as profit margin ratio and operating profit ratio, and the manager of shipping firm can increase firms profitability by more efficient working capital management. There are strong positive relationships between average payment period and operating cycle and firm's profitability. These results suggest that managers can create firm's value by increasing average payment period and operating cycle. Otherwise inventory turnover and cash conversion cycle have negative relationships with firm's profitability. It means that managers can increase firm's profitability by reducing these variables.
