The purpose of the present study is to develop several types of English teaching/learning models in view of cross-curricular approach in Korean elementary school. Brewster(1992)' model is suitable for younger children as well as the 1st or 2nd graders. For 3rd or 4th graders, Halliwel1(1997)' model seems more proper type in Korean EFL situation. There has been studying for cross-curricular approach in elementary English education. Many studies has recently focused the characteristics of elementary students by cognitive and psychological perspectives. Among them, Park(1996)'s research talks about the elementary school students. Han(1996)'s research based on the notion of applied to other subjects. Kim(1999)'s also emphasized the importance of linking other subjects. Kim(2003) argued the need of integrating English with other subjects. The elementary education as the National Common Basic Curriculum(NCBC) has the essence of cross-curricular approach, so the English education will be linked with other subject matters more and more, not just as for Communicative function based English education but as both content and function based subject matter.
This paper aims to explore the vocabulary difference between South and North Korean English textbooks as a first step toward a unified vocabulary list. To this end, both South and North Korean English textbooks in 2000s and 2010s are digitized into a corpus of text files, and a vocabulary list is constructed based on the corpus with reference to its concordances for the vocabulary use and contexts using AntConc 3.5.7. The vocabulary list of North Korean English textbooks are compared and found in their differences of quantity and quality of the English vocabulary in English education. Both quantitative and qualitative differences are found in between South and North Korean English textbook corpus. Both South and North aim that students learn about 3,000 words throughout the English education. North Korean English textbook contains more special academic vocabulary while South Korean English textbook is constrained by a strict vocabulary control which does not allow such a flexibility. Differences of vocabulary and their use are caused by the capitalistic market economy of South and the socialists' planned economy of North. Differences are also attributed to the religious words and grammatical vocabulary appearance.

The object of the present study was to examine whether it is possible to get appropriate data to examine the accountability and effectiveness of the elementary English curriculum from the present testing system at elementary schools. The present elementary education policy encourages using performance assessment relying mainly on teachers' observation of students' performanceinstead of objective tests of which the results are given in hierarchical number. To obtain objective data from the performance assessment, it is a prerequisite that teachers understand the achievement criteria set by the curriculum and be able to judge' performance objectively based on the same criteria. A questionnaire was used to examine the degree of teachers' understanding of the achievement criteria. A listening test was developed and given to 13 classes of 4th graders. The English teachers of the 13 classes were asked to judge whether each of their students had achieved the curriculum objective. The distributions of the test scores and teachers judgments were compared across the teachers to examine whether the teachers had the same achievement criteria. The survey showed that about a third of elementary school teachers reported that they did not have an understanding of the achievement criteria set by the curriculum. The comparison analysis showed that the levels of achievement criteria varied greatly among the elementary school teachers.
This paper explores the ways to reshape humanistic values of the curriculum of the English department of Korean universities. The English curricula are usually composed of three fields of literary studies, general education, and English proficiency, whose conventional humanistic values have been currently dwindling. As for literary studies, teaching literature still hovers over the canonical works of past decades, not allowing students to access the canon with their own ideas and ending up with authoritative monologues. The general education field leans toward edited texts rather than authentic ones, which ignores a genuine path of communication between the author and its readers. Subjects for English proficiency such as "TOEIC" tend to be taught online with no teacher's presence for the nominal purpose of optimizing economic efficiency in teaching. All these testify to the attenuation of humanistic values in the curriculum, which motivates us to suggest some ways to reshape the values. Authoritative monologue in teaching literature can be shifted to the open-ended conversation by using role-play methods as well as accepting extra-canonical works into the curriculum. Authentic texts for general education prove to be preferred by students with the successful result of our experiment. Lastly, it is teacher's presence in the class that helps get higher achievement of "TOEIC" than some online classes. As suggested above, open-ended conversation, wider communication between author and readers, and human presence of the class will help reshape humanistic values in the English curriculum.

A variety of creative convergence education studies have been conducted around the world, but the study of creative convergence education based on problem-oriented learning is insignificant. STEAM education development research for engineering human resources also recognizes important factors like ethics awareness and consideration, cooperation, leadership, and communication skills. This study developed a model of interdisciplinary classes between marketing and commercial English classes as a way to effectively learn to cultivate the creative and fusion talents required by modern society. A model was developed for the process of convergence classes to be developed for evaluation after class by designing courses, selecting subjects, designing classes, drawing questions, and developing problems, as well as for discussion of pre-convergence courses, class performance, and class evaluation. The Mongolian university discussed in this paper plans to introduce a suitable educational environment by developing a problem for interdisciplinary classes in marketing and business English. Based on the need to nurture talent required by the rapidly changing knowledge-based society, Mongolian universities should continue the strategy of fostering creative convergence talent through the convergence of technology. This is because creativity is the most important thing in the current situation.
N-gram analysis casts a new look at the n-word cluster in use different from the previously known idioms. It analyzes a corpus of English textbooks for frequently occurring n consecutive words mechanically using a concordance software, which is different from the previously known idioms. The current paper aims at extracting and comparing 4-gram words clusters between South Korean high school English textbooks and its North Korean counterpart. The classification criteria includes number of tokens and types between the two across oral and written languages in the textbooks. The criteria also use the grammatical categories and functional categories to classify and compare the 4-gram words clusters. The grammatical categories include noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, partial clauses and others. The functional categories include deictic function, text organizers, stance and others. The findings are: South Korean high school English textbook contains more tokens and types in both oral and written languages. Verb phrase and partial clause 4-grams are grammatically most frequently encountered categories across both South and North Korean high school English textbooks. Stance is most dominant functional category in both South and North Korean English textbooks.
This study investigated cyber university students' motivation and demotivation in learning English. Data was collected from a survey of 498 students in a general English course at a cyber university located in Seoul. The survey inquired into participants' English learning motivation and demotivation. To analyze the data, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA were used. The findings reveal that among the motivation factors ideal L2 self was the main cause of motivation followed by promotion-based instrumentality. Among the demotivation factors the anxiety factor was found to have the highest mean followed by negative investment value for learning English. The statistical analysis of English learning motivation and demotivation according to the participants' characteristics indicates that, in terms of English learning motivation factors, the male participants' ought-to L2 self was significantly higher than that of the females' and the promotion-based instrumentality of the students who are unemployed was higher than those who are employed. Moreover, the younger the students' age, the higher their competitive motivation and promotion-based instrumentality. In terms of English learning demotivation, the female respondents achieved higher scores in the factors of anxiety, passive learning style, and negative investment value for learning English than their male counterparts. In addition, employed students showed higher demotivation in negative investment value for learning English than those without employment. The findings of this research can be used in developing online English programs for cyber university students who possess diverse learning goals.
"SMART" is a word to condense a new kind of educational system recently proposed by the Korean government. It signifies an intelligent adaptive learning system to innovate the educational environment, the contents, methodology and assessment. Developing a digital textbook was one of the main strategic goals to drive forward "smart" education. The Korean government expected to finish the development of digital textbooks of science, mathematics, social studies and English by 2013 and to have a field experiment for them in 2014. However, the case of mathematics was postponed for an indefinite period because its draft version was no different from a traditional textbook in its functional aspect. This situation might come from the non-existence of a good authoring tool and an inexperienced sense by developers of the opportunities available with digital textbooks. This paper introduces the main features for developing a digital mathematics textbook for the 12th grade students, which was developed in the environment of Cabri LM as an authoring tool. This paper also looks upon the results of a whole lesson using the textbook in managing the classroom interaction with students.
According to domestic and foreign research, one of the common characteristics of good teaching is a variety of class activities. To make 'Business Major English' a good class, the researcher used a variety of class activities such as professor explanation, group activities & presentation, vocabulary quizzes, reading comprehension, homework and test feedback. The participants were 39 junior students who took 'Business Major English' in 2015 and 2016. Data on student perception were gathered from questionnaires. The analysis of the data showed, first, that the class activity the students preferred the most was professor explanation. Second, the class activity which was the most helpful in understanding text content and English sentence structures was professor explanation. Third, there were not many students preferring group activities & presentation and the students found group activities & presentation the least helpful in understanding text content and English sentence structures. Given the results, this study implies that for English class activities, students' preferences and the help they perceive have a relation to the characteristics of a class and students' English proficiency.
