Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THM), haloacetic acid (HAA) and haloacetonitriles (HAN) from chlorination of extracellular organic matter (EOM) and cells + intracellular organic matter (IOM) of Microcystis sp., a blue-green algae, during decomposed period was investigated. Microcystis sp. cells + IOM and EOM of Microcystis sp. exhibited a high potential for DBP formation. HAAFP (formation potential) was higher than THMFP during decomposed period. In the variations of HAAFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HAAFP species was gradually decreased and the ratio of tri-HAAFP species was gradually increased in the case of EOM during decomposed period, while the opposite result was in the case of cells + IOM during decomposed period. In the variations of HANFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HANFP species was much higher than the ratio of tri-HAAFP species.

Acidosis conditions either acute or chronic following ingestion of excessive amounts of readily fermented carbohydrate are great production problems for goat in Bangladesh. This study designed to investigate the prevalence of lactic acidosis and then response to different therapeutic agents. For this purpose, 1,128 goat were examined at outdoor District Veterinary Hospital, Faridpur, Bangladseh for treatment of which 40 goats were found positive for lactic acidosis showing 3.55% prevalence of disease. The highest occurrence found in female (4.64%) of over 3 years age (4.64%) in indigenous goat (2.7%). For therapeutic assessment the forty affected goats were divided into four groups A, B, C and D comprising of 10 animals each. Group A were given magnesium hydroxide 8% w/v at 1 g/kg body weight orally. In group B magnesium hydroxide 8% w/v at a dose as group A combination with 7.5% sodium bicarbonate at the rate of 0.9 ml/Kg body weight intravenously administered. Goat in group D were treated with mixture of ginger, nuxvomica, sodium carbonate, cobalt sulphate, dried ferrous sulphate and thiamin mononitrate at the rate of 1 g/kg body weight orally. Goat of group C treated with combination drugs of group A, B and D. The rectal temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, was performed before and after treatment. It was found that the highest recovery in group C with an average period of $21{\pm}1.8$ hours. It was concluded that lactic acidosis is a common disease of goats and its severity can be effectively reduced by using combination drugs.

Disinfection of ballast water using chlorine dioxide was investigated under various initial microorganism contents, dose concentrations and pH values. Kinetics of microorganism inactivation and byproduct generation of chlorine dioxide treatment were compared with the chlorine treatment. Results of treatments with chlorine dioxide concentrations of 0 to $10mg\;Cl_2/L$ showed that The optimum concentration of chlorine dioxide required for disinfection of ballast water was 1 mg/L. The difference among the second order reaction constants for bacterial disinfection at pH 7.2 to 9.2 for chlorine dioxide was less than 5% for both bacteria. This result implied that the bactericidal effects of chlorine dioxide was independent of the pH in the examined range. On the other hand, the inactivation kinetics of chlorine for E. coli and Enterococcus decreased by 17% and 25%, respectively, when pH increased from 7.2 to 9.2. The bactericidal power of chlorine dioxide was superior to sodium hypochlorite above pH 8.2, the average pH value of sea water. Furthermore, treatments of chlorine dioxide generated less harmful byproducts than chlorine and had a long-term disinfection effect on bacteria and phytoplankton from the results of experiment for 30 days. Chlorine dioxide would be a promising alternative disinfectant for ballast water.

For well-constructed concrete, its service life is a long term and it has an enough durability performance. However, for cracked concrete, it is clear that cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions according to author's previous researches. In order to enhance the lifetime of cracked concrete, critical issues in the performance of the concrete is the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. Even though crack width can be reduced due to the high reinforcement ratio, the question is to which extend these cracks may jeopardize the durability of cracked concrete. If the size of crack is small, surface treatment system can be considered as one of the best options to extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to marine environment simply in terms of cost effectiveness versus durability performance. Thus, it should be decided to undertake an experimental study on the effect of different types of surface treatment system, which are expected to seal the concrete and the cracks to chloride-induced corrosion in particular. In this study, it is examined the effect of surfaced treated systems on chloride penetration through microcracks. Single surface treatments of penetrant or coating and double application were considered as an experimental variation. RCM (Rapid Chloride Migration) testing is accomplished to visualize chloride penetration via cracks.
The effects of chlorine treatment on the rheological properties (farinogram, extensogram, amylogram) of soft white wheat flour were studied by treating flour with different amounts (1, 2 and 4 ounces per 100 pounds of flour) of liquidized chlorine gas. Departure time, water absorption and dough stability increased while mechanical tolerance index decreased as the level of chlorine increased. It was appeared that extensibility and resistance at chlorine level of 1 to 2 oz was appropriate for baking properties of flour compared to those of untreated wheat flour. The temperature at maximum viscosity increased gradually with increasing levels of chlorine. It was noted that maximum viscosity was greatly increased at 4 oz compared to those of lower levels of chlorine treatment.

To improve the durability of concrete structure, we usually consider the reduction of water-cement ratio, the increase of concrete cover depth and the use of mineral admixtures. The use of admixtures make concrete more durable and tighten against water in recent papers so it is needed to study more about the relationship between the admixtures and the chloride ion diffusion. Therefore we analyzed the correlation between chloride ion diffusion and physical properties such as compressive strength, void ratio, air permeability of the concrete, and tried to use them as fundamental data for analyzing chloride ion diffusion mechanism of the concrete mixed with mineral admixtures.

In this study the effects of pre-chlorination on the coagulation of water which contain Microcystis aeruginosa. were investigated on the laboratory scale. We prepared the sample of $10^5cell/mL$ Microcystis aeruginosa and then applied 0.2, 1.0, 10 mg-Cl/L chlorine on the sample After reaction period(1 minute and 1 hour), each sample was coagulated. As a result, after 0.4 mg-Al/L coagulant dose, turbidities of all samples were below 2 mg-Kaolin/L. Turbidity was not affected by chlorine dose. As the dose of chlorine was increased, the residual aluminum was decreased, but result of $UV_{254}$ was adverse.
Gitelman's syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesemia, and hypocalciuria that has recently been reported to be linked to thiazide- sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter gene mutation. In this study, we performed renal clearance studies to differentiate Gitelman's from Bartter's syndrome and to confirm the diagnosis in two patients clinically diagnosed with Gitelman's syndrome. Each patient was hydrated by 20 mL/kg body weight of oral water within 30 minutes, which was followed by intravenous half saline. When urinary flow reached 10 mL/min, samples of urine and serum were obtained to calculate the osmolar clearance, free water clearance, chloride clearance, and distal fractional chloride reabsorption. Subsequently, furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide was administered. Samples were collected and the same parameters were calculated. In our patients, chloride clearance was increased more than 10 times after furosemide administration(2.1 : 25.7 and 2.2 : 27.4 mL/min/100 mL GFR), but not increased after hydrochlorothiazide treatment(2.1 : 1.6 and 2.2 : 2.6 mL/min/100 mL GFR). And the distal fractional chloride reabsorption was significantly decreased by furosemide injection (73% : 15% and 75% : 4.6%), whereas hydrochlorothiazide had no effect on it(73% : 63% and 75% : 78%). These findings indicate that our patients have a defect in thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter in the distal tubule, which is compatible with the pathophysiology of Gitelman's syndrome.

The electrical resistivity of concrete can be related to two processes involved in corrosion of reinforcement: initiation (chloride penetration) and propagation (corrosion rate). The resisistivity of concrete structure exposed to chloride indicates the risk of early corrosion damage, because a low resistivity is related to rapid chloride penetration and to high corrosion rate. Concrete resistivity is a geometry-independent material property that describes the electrical resistance, which is the ratio between applied voltage and resulting current in a unit cell. In previous study, it was realized that the resistivity of concrete depended on the moisture content in the concrete, microstructural properties, and environmental attack such as carbonation. The current is carried by ions dissolved in the pore liquid. While some data exist on the relationship between moisture content on electrical resistivity of concrete, very little research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of chloride on the conduction of electricity through concrete. The purpose of this study is to examine and quantify the effect of chloride content on surface electrical resistivity measurement of concrete. It was obvious that chloride content had influenced the resistivity of concrete and the relationship showed a linear function. That is, concrete with chloride ions had a comparatively lower resistivity. Decreasing rate of resistivity of concrete was clear at early time, however, after 50 days resistivity was constant irrespective of chloride concentration. Conclusively, this paper suggested the quantitive solution to depict the electrical resistivity of concrete with chloride content.

The qualitative factors influencing the ingress of chloride ion into concrete are water-binder (W/B) ratio, cement type, age, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. Thus, an objective of this experimental research is to investigate the effects of cement types and environmental conditions on the chloride ion diffusion characteristics in concrete through the chloride ion diffusion test. For this purpose, the diffusion coefficients for chloride ion in concrete with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC), were measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratios of 32%, 38%, and 43%, respectively. The diffusion coefficients for chloride ion were also measured for the concrete specimens with W/B ratio of 43%, which were subjected to standard curing and field exposure conditions. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against chloride ion penetration increased with decreasing W/B ratio and those of BBC and TBC concretes were greater than that of OPC concrete. Therefore, it was revealed that the use of these cements containing mineral admixtures is required to extend the service life of RC structures exposed to chloride environment. On the other hand, it was noted that the resistance against chloride ion penetration of field exposure test specimens was slightly lower than that of standard curing test specimens due to the penetration of chloride ion under the irregular ambient temperature, splash of wave, and cycle of wet and dry.
