  • The seasonal variations of water salinity and the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM value) have been monitored in the Keum Estuary and its adjacent coastal area. the concentrations of suspended matters show great seasonal variations with low concentrations during summer season and high concentrations during winter season. During the flood season of summer, water salinities are less than 5% in the Keum estuary, and the brackish water (salinity<28%) prevails seaward covering the entire coastal area. The concentrations decreased abruptly to the seaward from higher than 100mg/l in the Keum estuary to less than 5 mg/l in the offshore. These phenomena probably results from the rapid e\deposition of riverine suspended matters within the Keum Estuary. The seasonal variations of suspended matter concentrations in the Keum Estuary and its adjacent coastal area are interpreted as the cyclic (seasonal) sedimentation processes in the west coast of Korea, that is, replenishment and deposition of fine sediments in summer, and resuspension and seaward transport in winter.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of salinity in irrigation water on the growth, yield components, yield and grain quality of rice plant by the pot experiments. Irrigation waters were supplied with control and amended with NaCl at 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ electrical conductivity. A randomized block design was used with four replicates for each treatment and control. As increasing salt concentration, plant height, tiller number, SPAD value, dry weight, content of N, P, and K, ripened grain ratio (%), 1,000 grain weight, and protein content (%) tended to decrease, especially, significant at 3,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ of salt level. Grain yield decreased significantly at all treatments. The percentage of head rice slightly tended to increase as the salt concentration due to the decrease of green kernel. The percentage of green kernel was significantly lower at 3,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ of salt level than the control.

  • Preservation effects of the addition of ethanol (0-2% w/w) in low salt (4, 8% w/w) Doenzangs were investigated. Salt and ethanol suppressed remarkably the content of titrable acidity and ammoniacal nitrogen during the fermentation for 30 days at $30^{\circ}C$. In storage test after aging, 1% ethanol and 4% salt showed almost similar antiseptic effect and in the sensory evaluation, 4% salt-1% ethanol added sample had the most overall acceptability.

  • In this study, the variability in paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) by the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella (Group I) was analyzed under a variety of water temperatures and salinities. This dinoflagellate experienced optimum growth at temperatures and salinities of 20~30℃ and 20~30 psu, respectively. These findings indicate that A. catenella is an eurythermal and euryhaline organism. High toxin contents and toxicities were observed at low temperatures (10 and 15℃), where they were associated with low growth rates; salinity did not have any significant impact on toxicity parameters. Therefore, it is likely that A. catenaella contributes to the rapid intoxication of commercial bivalve when temperatures are ≤15℃. To better estimate PSP caused by A. catenalla, we suggest that the influence of various environmental factors controlling PSP should persist with other A. catenella stains and commercial bivalves.

  • Changes in 13 free amino acids (FAA) of Haliotis discus discus exposed to various salinities were investigated using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Taurine, glycine and alanine are three major contributors to the total FAA in the gill tissues of H. discus discus. Concentration of taurine was 114 imol/g dry tissue weights accounting for 76.64% of total FAA in H. discus discus. Levels of most FAAs in H. discus discus exposed to low and high salinities for 24 h decreased dramatically. Taurine concentration was slightly increased in the samples exposed to 20 psu and 25 psu for 48 h, and greatly increased after 120 h exposure. After 48 hrs exposure to 20 psu, 25 psu, 30 psu and 40 psu, methionine in H. discus discus was not detected; no methionine was detected in the sample exposed to 20 psu, 25 psu, 30 psu and 40 psu after 120 h of exposure. Taurine:glycine ratio increased depending upon hyper-hypoosmotic condition as well as period of osmotic stress. These data indicate that taurine, glycine and methionine play important role in regulating osmotic stress in H. discus discus. This study suggesting that FAA analysis is a useful tool to diagnose osmotic stress to H. discus discus.

  • Changes of gill tissue and body composition of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by the manipulation of salinity were observed in a recirculating rearing system. Salinity was increased from $0\%_{\circ}$ to $33\%_{\circ}$for 1 day and remained far 15days, thereafter salinity was decreased from $33\%_{\circ}$ to $0\%_{\circ{$ for 1 day and remained for other 15 days. Any morphological differences of gill lamella in grey mullet were not observed in seawater and freshwater. However, on day 2 in exposure to seawater, Nile tilapia showed the edema and bloodclot in gill lamella. In the case of grey mullet, mitochondria and tubular system of chloride cell were more densely packed according to the salinity increase. The whole body of grey mullet showed no significant differences in moisture content during experimental period. However, moisture content in whole body of the Nile tilapia was signincantly decreased when exposed to seawater. Protein content in whole body of grey mullet showed no significant difference between beginning and day 15 of the experiment.

  • This study was carried for the purpose of using basic data for vegetation management plans by analyzing the current status of herbaceous community and Salix spp. community at Janghang Wetland in Han-river estuary. In order to investigate the vegetation status, the 50 plots were investigated and analyzed using the quadrat and Braun-Branquet method. In the herbaceous community, were found a total of 31 taxa of 11 families, 24 genera, 28 species, and 3 variants. A total of 42 taxa of 16 families, 33 genera, 39 species and 3 variants were appeared in the Salix subfragilis community, and a total of 46 taxa with classification of 19 families, 37 genera, 43 species, and 3 varieties were founded in the Salix koreensis community. As for the analysis of life-form and dominance, the hydatophytes was relatively high in the Salix subfragilis community, the hemicryptothytes was high in herbaceous community and therophytes was high in Salix koreensis community. As a result of correlation analysis of electrical conductivity(EC) and exchangeable sodium(Na+) in the soil, hydatophytes and hemicryptothytes showed a negative correlation, and therophytes showed a positive correlation. Therefore, it was analyzed that Salix koreensis and therophytes have a high rate of appearance in relatively dry and salty soil. Salix subfragilis, hydatophytes, and hemicryptothytes have a high rate of appearance in low salt concentrations and wet areas.

  • It has been reported that about 47% of groundwater wells within 10 km from the coastline in the western/southern coastal areas of Korea were affected by seawater. It has been interpreted that the cause of groundwater salinization is seawater intrusion. The Gilsan stream in the Seocheon area was a tidal stream until the Geumgang estuary dam was constructed and operated. Therefore, it is likely that the Gilsan stream catchment was deposited with sediments containing high-saline formation water prior to the use of landfill farmland at this catchment area. The groundwater in this study area showed EC values ranging from 111 to 21,000 µS/cm, and the water quality types were diverse including Ca(or Na)-HCO3, Ca(or Na)-HCO3(Cl), Na-Cl(HCO3), Na-Cl types. It is believed that this diversity of water quality is due to the mixing of seawater and fresh groundwater generated by infiltration of precipitation and surface water through soil and weathered part. In this study, we discussed whether this water quality diversity and the presence of saline groundwater are due to present seawater intrusion or to remnant high-saline pore water in sediments during flushing out process. For this, rain water, surface water, seawater, and groundwater were compared regarding the water quality characteristics, tritium content, oxygen/hydrogen stable isotopic composition, and 87Sr/86Sr ratio. The oxygen/hydrogen stable isotopic compositions indicated that water composition of saline groundwaters with large EC values are composed of a mixture of those of fresh groundwater and surface water. Also, the young groundwater estimated by tritium content has generally higher NO3 content. All these characteristics showed that fresh groundwater and surface water have continued to affect the high-saline groundwater quality in the study area. In addition, considering the deviation pattern in the diagrams of Na/Cl ratio versus Cl content and SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) versus Cl content, in which two end members of fresh surface-ground water and seawater are assumed, it is interpreted that the groundwater in the study area is not experiencing present seawater intrusion, but flush out and retreating from ancient saline formation water.
