  • There is a growing concern about the possible increase in inter-annual variation of minimum temperature during the winter season in Korea. This view is strengthened by frequently reported freezing injury to dormant fruit trees, while warmer winters have prevailed recently. The January minimum temperature record at fourteen weather stations was analyzed for 1951-2000. The results showed no evidence of increasing standard deviation at 3 locations between 1951-1980 and 1971-2000, while the remaining 11 stations showed a trend of decreasing standard deviation for the two periods. An empirical model explaining the spatial variation of the standard deviation was derived by regression analysis of 56 stations' data for 1971-2000. Daily minimum temperature and the site elevation may account for 68% of the observed variations. We applied this model to restore the average standard deviation of the January minimum temperature for 1971-2000, and the result was used to produce gridded minimum temperature data for the recurrence interval of 10 and 30 years at 250m resolution. A digital form of the plant hardiness zone map may be developed from this product for site-specific selection of adapted plant species.

  • This experiment was conducted to select the affected main factors on growth and fruit characteristics of 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) in 25 factors of air temperature factors in Naju. Mean air temperature, cumulative temperature and days for March and April of 25 factors were the highest annual variation. Number of the first and second principal components extracted from 25 air temperature factors were 14 and 3 factors related with mean temperature for annul and April, and cumulative contribution of these was 52.2%. Also the affected years by the first principal components were 1990, 1980 and 1986. Annual standard deviation on leafing, flowering and maturing date were 4.0~6.7 days range, and flowering date and days from leafing to flowering had the highest coefficient of variation. Annual variation of days from flowering to maturing date was affected by greatly mean air temperature and days of cumulative temperature in October, days from March 1 to leafing date was affected by cumulative temperature for growing period, days from leafing to flowering date was affected by mean air temperature in April. Annual variation of fruit weight was affected by mean air temperature for March and October.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the morphological traits, yield and yield components of barley cultivars - Kangbori, Olbori and Suwon 18 - on different seeding dates. It appeared generally rapid development of young spike from late stage of floret differentiation (X stage) to complete it at heading stage. Young spike appeared more influencials by the different seeding dates rather than years and cultivars. Stem started the development from late stage of spikelet differentiation (VII stage) to early stage of floret differentiation (IX stage), indicating the continuing development from basal to upper internodes. Number of spikes per unit area showed more effect in seeding date rather than cultivar and year. However, number of kernels per spike and 1,000 kernel weight affected more due to years rather than cultivar and seeding date. It was significantly difference in grain yield according to different seeding dates.

  • This study was carried out to improve the rice grain quality of Gyeoungbuk Province from 2002 to 2004. In variation of grain quality characteristics as the cultivation years were changed, the coefficient of variation (CV) of palatability and amylose content were relatively low as $3.9\~4.3\%$ and those of protein content and head rice rate were high as $7.9\~12.2\%$. Among the varieties, the tendency of variation was similar with cultivation years changing, CV of amylose content and palatability also low as $2.6\~3.6\%$ and those of head rice rate and protein content were high as $5.4\~7.2\%$. In variation as affected by shifting of transplanting times, the CV of protein content was low as 2.2, it was also relatively low in amylose content and head rice rate as $3.1\~3.7\%$, but it was high in palatability as $5.8\%$. As the nitrogen application levels were different the CV of amylase content was $1.8\%$ that it was not affected by the N levels. But in case of protein content, the CV was $4.4\%$ that the variation was somewhat increased, it suggested that as the N levels were increased the protein content was also increased. From these results, the rice quality characteristics showed the higher variation in the change of cultivation years than that in rice varieties, transplanting times or nitrogen levels.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate yearly variation and stability of yield and yield components of fifteen rice varieties. Yield stability and universal variety parameter of rice varieties were utilized for statistical model developed by Stroike, Grafius, and Finlay respectively. The lowest yearly variation based on coefficient of variation was found in Dasanbyeo for number of panicles/hill, in Jodongji for number of grains/panicle, in Yongmoonbyeo for ripened grain ratio, in Nagdongbyeo for 1,000 grain weight, and in Dasanbyeo for grain yield. Stability analysis by Stroike and Johnson's model revealed that Ilpumbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo in Japonica type, and And-abyeo and Dasanbyeo in Tongil type had the higher stability above average. Universal varieties analyzed by Grafius model were Ilpumbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, Nagdongbyeo, and Jodongji in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo and Samgangbyeo in Tongil type. Damageum, Dongjinbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo and Ilpumbyeo in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo and Yongmoonbyeo in Tongil type were found to be highly stable as analyzed by Finlay & Wilkinson's model. In conclusion, with reference to both grain yield and stability based on above three methods, Ilpumbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, and Dongjinbyeo in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo in Tongil type were evaluated to be highly year-stable and high-yielding.

  • Gel consistency data collected from various experiments in same location during 1988 to 1992 were analysed to clarify the degree of varietal and environmental variation in rice. Most of japonica and Tongil-type rice varieties were belonged to soft gel consistency, and average gel length of japonica rice was longer than that of Tongil-type varieties. Gel length of glutinous rice cultivars was extremely long, near 100mm. Year variation of gel consistency was recognized, but did not affect on varietal difference. Gel consistency of most rice varieties and pedigree lines tested varied slightly between different seeding dates or nitrogen levels, but gel length of two indica rice varieties were decreased with the later seeding dates or the higher nitrogen levels. Rice varieties belonged to extremely hard or extremely soft gel consistency showed less variation of gel length between different years, seeding dates or nitrogen levels compared with intermediate ones.

  • Few studies have attempted to analyze variations of daily maximum temperature in the summer whereas many studies have analyzed warming trends in other seasons with respect to greenhouse gases or urban heat islands. We analyzed daily maximum temperature data for the summer season (June to August) at 18 locations in South Korea from 1983 to 2007. Compared to the climatic normal (from 1971 to 2000), an average increase of $0.1^{\circ}C$ was found for the summer daily maximum temperature along with an increase of $0.61MJ\;m^{-2}$ in daily solar radiation. Approximately 65% of the annual variations of the summer daily maximum temperature could be explained by the solar radiance alone. Higher atmospheric transmittance due to lower aerosol concentration (especially of sulfur dioxide) is believed to have caused the recent increase in solar irradiance. Daily maximum temperature of the summer is expected to keep rising if the clean air activities are maintained in the future.
