This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation of clayey soil by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up of excess pore pressures as a function of the rigidity index and subsequent dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves over 50% degree of dissipation range using optimization technique. The effectiveness of the proposed back-analysis method was examined against the real fled performances obtained from pressuremeter strain holding tests at Gimje and Yangsan site. It is shown that the proposed back-analysis method can evaluates the rational horizontal coefficient of consolidation, which is similar to those obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.

Spline curve scheme is the most valuable tool for the CAD of industrial products. Hence, the development of a new, effective curve scheme can have immediate impact on the current design industries. This paper develops and implements a new methodology for the implementation of the visually continuous class of splines which can produce a more flexible and diverse curve shapes. This class of splines has advantaged over existing splines in that it can accommodate wider range of shapes while maintaining the interpolators property of the ordinary cardinal splines. Most importantly, we avoid using the previous method of implementing G$^1$ curves, where users must specify scalar values for the control of curve shapes. We derive and implement an easy-to -use transformation between the user-specified graphical tangent vectors and the actual parameters for the resulting curve. Since the resulting curve shape reflects original tangential direction faithfully, CAD users can simply represent approximate curve shapes with proper tangents. Consequently, a simple user interface device such as a mouse can effectively produce a various spline curves using the proposed spline tool.
Droplet-based microfluidic device has led to transformational new approaches in various applications including materials synthesis and high-throughput screening. However, efforts are required to enhance the production rate to industrial scale because of low production rate in a single droplet generator. In here, we present a method for enhancing production rate of monodisperse droplets via parallelization of flow-focusing generators. For this, we fabricated a three-dimensional monolithic elastomer device (3D MED) that has the 3D channel structures in a single layer, using a double-sided imprinting method. We demonstrated that the production rate of monodisperse droplet is increased by controlling the flow rate of continuous and dispersed phases in 3D MED with 8 droplet generators. Thus, we anticipate that this microfluidic system will be used in wide area including microparticle synthesis and screening system via encapsulation of various materials and cells in monodisperse droplets.
The random and heterogeneous pore structure is a significant factor that dominates physical and mechanical behaviors of soils such as fluid flow and geomechanical responses driven by loading. The characterization method using non-destructive testing such as micro X-ray CT technique which has a high resolution with micrometer unit allows to observe internal structure of soils. However, the application has been limited to qualitatively observe 2D and 3D CT images and to obtain the void ratio at macro-scale although the CT images contain enormous information of materials of interests. In this study, we constructed the 3D particle and pore structures based on sequentially taken 2D images of glass beads and quantitatively defined complex pore structure with void cell and void channel. This approach was enabled by implementing image processing techniques that include coordinate transformation, binarization, Delaunay Triangulation, and Euclidean Distance Transform. It was confirmed that the suggested algorithm allows to quantitatively evaluate the distribution of void cells and their connectivity of heterogeneous pore structures for glass beads.

In this paper, a two-phase structural health monitoring system using acceleration response signatures are presented to firstly alarm the change in structural condition and to secondly detect the changed location for full-scale concrete girder bridges. Firstly, Mihocheon Bridge which is a two-span continuous concrete girder bridge is selected as the target structure. The dynamic response features of Mihocheon Bridge are extracted by forced vibration test using bowling ball. Secondly, the damage alarming occurrence and the damage localization techniques are selected to design two-phase structural health monitoring system for Mihocheon Bridge. As the damage alarming techniques, auto-regressive model using time-domain signatures, correlation coefficient of frequency response function and frequency response ratio assurance criterion are selected. As the damage localization technique, modal strain energy-based damage index method is selected. Finally, the feasibility of two-phase structural health monitoring systems is evaluated from static loading tests using a dump truck.

Capacitively-coupled resistivity (CCR) system is known to be very useful where galvanic contact to earth is impossible, such as the area covered with thick ice, snow, concrete or asphalt. This system injects current non-galvanically, i.e., capacitively to earth through line antenna and measures potential difference in a same manner. We derived geometric factor for two types of antenna configuration and presented the method of processing and converting the data obtained with CCR system suitable to conventional resistivity inversion analysis. The CCR system, however, has limitations on use at conductive area or electrically noisy area since it is very difficult to inject sufficient current to earth with this system as with conventional resistivity system. This causes low SM ratio when acquiring data with CCR system and great care must be taken in acquiring data with this system. Additionally the uniform contact between line antennas and earth is also crucial factor to obtain good S/N ratio data. The CCR method, however, enables one to perform continuous profiling over a survey line by dragging entire system and thus will be useful in rapid investigation of conductivity distribution in shallow subsurface.
It is well know that the structure of shape memory alloy (SMA) can change from martensite austenite by either temperature or stress. Due to their inherent shape recovery properties, SMA fiber can be used such as for stress or cure-monitoring sensor or actuator, during applied stress or temperature. Incomplete superelasticity was observed as the stress hysteresis at stress-strain curve under cyclic loading test and temperature change. Superelasticity behavior was observed for the single-SMA fiber/epoxy composites under cyclic mechanical loading at stress-strain curve. SMA fiber or epoxy embedded SMA fiber composite exhibited the decreased interfacial properties due to the cyclic loading and thus reduced shape memory performance. Rigid epoxy and the changed interfacial adhesion between SMA fiber and epoxy by the surface treatment on SMA fiber exhibited similar incomplete superelastic trend. Epoxy embedded single SMA fiber exhibited the incomplete recovery during cure process by remaining residual heat and thus occurring residual stress in single SMA fiber/epoxy composite.

To analyze the behavior of a soil beam under pore water pressure, the results of analytical solutions and finite element analysis (FEM) were compared quantitatively. In contrast to the results of the analytical solution, the horizontal stress obtained from the FEM did not show a symmetrical distribution. On the other hand, the horizontal stress became closer to symmetrical distribution as the number of elements of the soil beam were increased. A comparison of the horizontal stresses from the analytic solution with those obtained from Gaussian points of FEM showed that the magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 3 elements was 6% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the compressive stress from the FEM using the same elements was 37% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. The magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 6 elements was 61% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the compressive stress from the FEM using the elements was 83% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. Vertical stresses, which were obtained from the analytical solution, showed a continuous distribution with the depth of the soil beam, whereas the vertical stresses from the FEM showed a discrete distribution corresponding to each element. The results also showed that the average value of the vertical stresses of each element was close to that of the pore water pressure. A comparison of the vertical displacements computed at the near vertical center line of the soil beam from the FEM with those of the analytical solution showed that the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 3 elements was 35% of the value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 6 elements was 57% of the value of the analytical solution.

In this study an effective stress analysis was performed to evaluate liquefaction potential and ground settlement for reclaimed sites. The effective stress model can simulate the stiffness degradation due to excess pore pressure and resulting ground deformation. It is applicable to a wide range of strain. An equivalent linear analysis suitable for low strain levels was also carried out to compare the effective stress analysis. Shear stress ratio calculated from an equivalent linear analysis was used to determine SPT blow count to prevent liquefaction. Depending on the magnitude of potential earthquake and fine contents, the SPT blow count was converted into an equivalent cone tip resistance. It was compared with the measured cone tip resistance. The measured elastic shear wave velocity and cone tip resistance from two reclaimed sites in Incheon were used to perform liquefaction analyses. Two liquefaction evaluation methods showed similar liquefaction potential which was evaluated continuously. The predicted excess pore pressure ratio of upper 20 m was between 40% and 70%. The calculated post-shaking settlement caused by excess pore pressure dissipation was less than 10 cm.

A nano-stereolithouaphy (NSL) apparatus has been developed for fabrication of microstructures with the resolution of 150 nanometers. In the NSL process, a complicated 3D structure can be fabricated by building layer by layer, so it does not require any sacrificial layer or any supporting structure. A laminated layer was fabricated by means of solidifying liquid-state monomers using two-photon absorption (TPA) which was induced by a femtosecond laser. When the fabrication of a 3D laminated structure was finished, unsolidified liquid-stage resins were removed to develop the fabricated structure by dropping several droplets of solvent, then the polymerized structure was only left on the glass substrate. A microstructure is fabricated by vector scanning method to save the fabrication time. The shell thickness of a structure is very thin within 200 nm, when it is fabricated by a single contour scanning (SCS) path. So, a fabricated structure can be deformed easily in the developing process. In this work, a double contour scanning (DCS) method was proposed to reinforce the strength of a shell typed structure, and a microcup was fabricated to show the usefulness of the developed NSL system and the DCS method.
