  • We investigated subgroups within a global communication network to improve the empirical understanding of global communication phenomenon from the social network perspective. We collected global communication data from Twitter and constructed a global communication network. We also added countries' geographic and economic properties used in the United Nations and the World Economic Forum. We analyzed the subgroups' structure within the global communication network using centrality analysis, core-peripheral analysis, and cohesion analysis. We also detected communities embedded within the global communication network with modularity-based community detection methods. We found that the core countries occupy central positions in the global communication network and there is a hierarchical communication structure among the economic subgroups. Futhermore, we discovered some communities within the global communication network and found that countries within the communities can have homophily such as economy, geography, history, culture, and religion.

  • The present study analyzes a Twitter network of some 175 government organizations belonging to seven countries. They are South Korea, U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Japan. The results showed that the U.S. occupied the most central position in terms of the incoming followings. Next, some clusters among countries were also noticeable according to their cultural proximities including national languages. The findings also indicate that some governmental organizations are likely to make international ties with others whose main duties are similar to each other. Finally, the structural connectivity pattern of some inter-governmental Twitter networks was visualized using a social network software. On the other hand, it suggests that there is a potential for a soft power through social media and as a result, it could be assumed that a new knowledge hegemony appears in the future.

  • As part of city marketing, many local governments are recently developing or have already developed a slogan for their own city brand. This study aims to provide basic source materials for an efficient and more systematic way in current development of the slogan for a city brand. Therefore, this study compared and analyzed the cases for developing the slogan for a city brand in Korea and in other nations, presenting some feasible solutions. As for the characteristics of the slogans for city brands in Korea, they were all campaign-type slogans with a single-component structure that includes the city's name. They mostly used values as their subject material. The basic requirements for producing a successful city-brand slogan include the emphasis on the quality of being unique and differentiated. A city-brand slogan must incorporate the kind of natural environment, the culture, the history, etc that are unique to the region in order to become a creative and unique slogan. Rather than being swayed by short-term trends, a city-brand slogan must have a long term vision and strategy as well as a clear and accurate setup. Also, a city-brand slogan will proliferate and create values as a brand when shared communications with all local residents continue to occur after developing the slogan.

  • Painting and writing are exceedingly different in the way they are visually express. However, if one were to trace the roots of both painting and writing, one would discover the two have the same origins. At one time, both painting and writing fulfilled the function portraying mutual or reciprocal messages to the masses. On the other hand, after the time of medieval manuscript and typography, they were separated completely into image and text. Today, the images are interpreted into the text. Meanwhile, the text better communicates its ideas to the masses through additional support of the simultaneous image. The joint use of the shaping of mutual exchanges between literature and visual art is being enlivened between scholars through their tendency to converse or communicate through the media. Moreover, the visual configuration and characters that strike into the new media are one of the various uses and the significantly important methods of deliberative communication that are necessary for hypertext functioning. In the following text, I will expande and develope the historical communication scheme and the process of modification of painting and writing, lead the origination of modern new-pictograph.

  • China has become a G-2 Superpower country as result of rapid economic growth through the reform and opening-up in these days. It expressed its confidence by helding a few big international events, such as Bejing Olympic Games. Shanghai Expo. Though most Chinese people give their agreement and support to the government, there are serious, ill-concealed political problems behind the curtain in China. As a multi-ethnic nation, China has repeated experience of fragmentation and integration of various ethnic groups through her long history. In spite of top-level political leaders of communist party always concern the issues of separatism very sensitively, China has suffered occasional bloodshed terrorism because of erupting ethnic and religious conflicts. Especially there are many disruption and fear due to the bloodshed and terrorism by a minority race-seperatists of Uighur tribe in Xinjiang province. The Uighur in Xinjiang province is very different from major Chinese Han ethnically and culturally. Although Chinese government has presented various policies in order to suppress the Uighus's desire for seperation, they have not been able to offer a fundamental, satisfying solution. Because we, Korean people face the expansion of possibility of conflicts, such as increasing of foreign workers, multi-cultural families and extremists. At this point, I believe we can learn valuable lessons from Chinese experiences for anti-terrorism.
