Geochemical Study of the Cretaceous Granitic Rocks in Yeosu Area (여수 지역에 분포하는 백악기 화강암류에 대한 지화학적 연구)

  • Cretaceous intrusive and extrusive rocks are widely distributed in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, possibly the result of intensive magmatism which occurred in response to subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the northeastern part of the Eurasian plate. Geochemical and petrological study on the Cretaceous granitic rocks of the Yeosu area were carried out in order to constrain the petrogenesis of the granitic rocks and to establish the paleotectonic environment of the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula. Igneous rocks of the Yeosu area consist of diorite, hornblende biotite pite and micrographic granite. Chondrite normalized REE patterns show generally enriched in LREE ($(La/Lu)^{cN}$=4.2-13.3). Diorites show flat to slight negative Eu anomalies while micrographic granites have strong negative Eu anomalies. The ${\Sigma}REE$ of the granites are 76.2-235 ppm, which corresponds to the range of the continental margin granite. Whole rock chemical data of the granitic rocks from the Yeosu area indicate that the rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the subalkaline field. On the A/NK vs. A/CNK and tectonic discrimination diagrams, parental magma type of the granites corresponds to I-type and volcanic arc granite (VAG). Interpretations of the chemical characteristics of the granitic rocks favor their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime at continental margin during the subduction of Pacific plate.

Age of the volcanism and deposition determined from the Cretaceous strata of the islands of Yeosu-si (여수시 도서지역의 백악기층에 나타나는 화성활동 및 퇴적시기)

  • Sado, Chudo, Mokdo, Nangdo, and Jeokgeumdo are the islands which belong to Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do and there are various kinds of volcanic rocks, volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks, and dinosaur-fossil bearing sedimentary rocks on these islands. This study is designed to constrain geologic ages of these volcanic and sedimentary rocks. K-Ar ages of these rocks indicate that the volcanism of this area occurred mainly during the period of 91.8 ${\pm}$ 3.5∼65.5 ${\pm}$ 1.3(l$\sigma$) Ma. Deposition ages of the sedimentary rocks were bracketed based on the ages of the volcanic rocks and observed field relationship between sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The oldest sedimentary deposit of the area is the volcanic pebble bearing conglomerate of the Jeokgeumdo and its deposition age is ca. 81 Ma or less. The deposition age of the Chudo shale, which belongs to stratigraphically upper sequence and bears many dinosaur footprints, is at least ca. 77 Ma. Conglomerate of the Mokdo was deposited at ca. 72∼70 Ma. The deposition age of the dinosaur fossil deposit of the Sado is at least ca. 65 Ma. All the investigated volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Yeosu islands were formed during the late Cretaceous and dinosaurs lived until the latest Cretaceous in this area.

  • Yeosu Gwangyang Port, along with Busan Port, Incheon Port, Ulsan Port, and Pyeongtaek Dangjin Port, serves as Korea's top five ports for trade on the southern coast. It is the second largest port in Korea after Busan Port, and the largest port in terms of import and export volume. Yeosu Chemical Industrial Complex, the world's largest chemical industrial complex, has continued to grow rapidly, but recently, the increase in volume has been decreasing. Therefore, this study sought to find major development strategies for the development of Yeosu Gwangyang Port and to derive the priorities of the strategies. To this end, the development strategy of Yeosu Gwangyang Port was divided into three major categories: operation revitalization, infrastructure construction, and policy support using the AHP analysis technique and analyzed again in two aspects: short, medium, and long term. As a result of the analysis, 'integrated operation of container docks and strengthening competitiveness' were considered the most important in short- and medium-term policies. It is believed that it will be necessary to integrate container operators, establish routes in preparation for entry of super-large ships, and install large cranes. In the long-term policy, the most important thing was to foster high value-added industries based on local industries. It is believed that strategies are needed to attract companies from outside regions through the settlement support system. The results of this study are expected to be used to establish development strategies for Yeosu Gwangyang Port and to establish investment priorities.

Sex ratio and intersexuality in coastal fishes near industrial complex of Korea (한국 산업단지 인근 연안 어류의 성비와 intersexuality)

  • Specimens were collected from the coastal region near industrial complex of Ulsan-Onsan, Sihwa-Ansan and Yeosu-Gwangyang in 2008 and 2009. The total number of individuals used in analysis was 1,289 of Acanthogobius flavimanus, Chelon haematocheilus, Hemibarbus labeo, Leiognathus nuchalis, Mugil cephalus and Synechogobius hasta. The sex ratio in the total individual was 1:0.73 (female:male). Specific sex ratio of fishes in the areas, namely the Ulsan-Onsan, Sihwa-Ansan and Yeosu-Gwangyang were 1:0.79, 1:0.81, and 1:0.25, respectively. Especially, female in Yeosu-Gwangyang was higher than male. The intersexuality in the total individual was 11.7%. Intersexuality of fishes in the areas were 4.98, 14.39 and 25.0% in the Ulsan-Onsan, Sihwa-Ansan and Yeosu-Gwangyang, respectively. It was indicated female higher than male in Ulsan-Onsan and male higher than female in Sihwa-Ansan and Yeosu-Gwangyang.

Perceptions and Assessments on Inter-municipal Cooperation of Gwangyang Bay Region : A Case of Specialist Groups (광양만권 도시연합 인식과 평가 분석: 전문가 집단을 사례로)

  • The three cities, Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang, in located in Gwangyang Bay which functions as a representative coastal industrial area in Korea, form a single functional area of living, municipality, and economy. In this regional context, some local merchants and scholars are promoting a inter-municipal cooperation of three cities. This study analyzes how the group of specialists perceives and evaluates the inter-municipal cooperation of three cities. The group of specialists highly evaluate the potential of future development of Gwangyang Bay region, and the relevance and necessity of feasibility of inter-municipal cooperation of three cities. It is estimated that the inter-municipal cooperation of three cities would need 8.3 years for its full-fledged shape. In order to accomplish the inter-municipal cooperation, the sharing the development vision of Gwangyang Bay region and the understanding and consent of the residents for the inter-municipal cooperation are suggested as the most important factors.

Analysis on Flood Control Effect of Siphon Spillway by Reservoir Routing (저수지 추적을 통한 사이펀 여수로의 홍수조절 효과 분석)

  • Agricultural small dam reservoirs in Korea are vulnerable to flooding because of insufficient flood control capacity and deterioration such that reservoir water level is likely to rise rapidly and a large amount of water release quickly to downstream without flood warning. In this study, we performed hydrologic analysis to estimate design flood(200 years return period ${\times}1.2$) and also evaluated the effect of siphon spillway as a structural countermeasure for flood control and mitigation by applying reservoir routing to the Jipyeong reservoir, located in Sangju, Korea. The results show that the design flood was calculated at $284.3m^3/s$, and water level and water release decreased by 40cm and $91m^3/s$, respectively.
