  • This study provides an improved transportation mode choice models applicable to the Busan-Ulsan Metropolitan area by scrutinizing previous study results developed using the multinomial logit model. Although the previous model has an appropriate modeling structure in terms of the sign of coefficient estimates and goodness-of-fit, the model ignores the total number of trips and traffic congestion condition between the two zones and partially reflects zone-specific variables and choice set. Therefore, this study considered all of these modeling faults by re-constructing the representative utility functions. The modeling results show that travelers in Busan-Ulsan metropolitan area tend to choose their mode using mode-specific characteristics rather than the classical travel time and/or cost variables.

  • Jeju-Mainland demand for air passenger is variated by the season because most of the demands stem from the leisure travel. This research is to estimate the econometrics demand models(A simple time series model and the partial adjustment model) and elasticities of each models for the Jeju-Mainland domestic routes air travel market using the time series aggregate data between the year 1996 and 2005. As the result of estimating, income elasticity was evaluated to be elastic(1.55) and fare elasticity was inelastic(-0.49-0.59) for A simple time series models. In the partial adjustment model's case, income elasticity was evaluated to be inelastic(0.51) in short-run whereas it was evaluated to be elastic(1.88) in long-run. Fare elasticity was evaluated to be inelastic in short-run(high-demand season: -0.13, slack season: -0.20) and long-run(high-demand season: -0.48, slack season: -0.72).

  • A large sample can Provide more information about the Population. As the sample size Increases, analysts will be more confident about the survey results. On the other hand, the costs for survey will increase in time and manpower. Therefore, determination of the sample size is a trade-off between the required accuracy and the cost. In addition, permitted error and significance level should be considered. Sample size determination in surveys for O/D estimation is also connected with confidence of survey result. However, the past methods were usually too simple to consider confidence. Therefore, a new method for O/D surveys was Proposed and it was accurate enough, but it has too large sample size when we have current budget constraint. In this research, several minimum sample size determination methods for origin-destination survey under budget constraint were proposed. Each method decreased sample size, but has its own advantages. Selection of the sample size will depend on the study Purpose and budget constraint.

  • This study investigates the time-space characteristics of intra-urban passenger flows in the Metropolitan Seoul area. In particular, we analyze the relationships between transit ridership and land use through the use of the subway passenger flow data obtained from the transit transaction databases. For this purpose, the strength of each subway station, i.e., the number of total in-coming and out-going passengers at each station, in the morning, afternoon, and evening, is calculated and visualized, which reflects urban land use patterns. Then the subway stations are classified into four groups via a hierarchical analysis of the in-coming and out-going passenger flows at 353 stations. Each group appears to have characteristic properties according to the region, e.g., residential areas and central business districts. This has been confirmed by the analysis which probes explicitly the relationship between the local socio-economic variables and station groups. This analysis, disclosing the inter-relationship between the subway network and urban land use, may be useful at various stages in urban as well as transportation planning, and provides analytical tools for a wide spectrum of applications ranging from impact evaluation to decision-making and planning support.

  • The purpose of this research is to optimize the line planning of the intercity passenger railway. In this study, the line planning problem has been formulated into a mixed integer programming by minimizing both user costs (passenger's total travel time) and operator costs (operation, maintenance and vehicle costs) with multiple train types. As a solution algorithm, the branch-and-bound method is used to solve this problem. The change of travel demand, train speed and the number of schedules have been tested through sensitivity analysis. The optimal stop-schedules and frequency as well as system split with respect to each train type have been found in the case study of Kyoung-bu railway line in Korea. The model and results of this research are useful to make a decision for railway operation strategy, to analyze the efficiency of new railway systems and to evaluate the social costs of users and operators.

  • For railway bridges, serviceabilities such as passenger comfort and train riding safety are important design requirements as well as the structural safety of the bridge. In this paper, dynamic responses of a steel box girder bridge by actual passing trains were measured and analyzed by probabilistic method. Deflections and accelerations data at center of side span were collected for about a month by various types of actual passenger and freight trains. Effects by axle weights, types of trains were analyzed. 100 and 200 years maximum values were estimated by Gumbel probability paper and compared with corresponding requirements in the current design code. Except for some cases of accelerations, estimated values were well below the criteria and exceedance probabilities were very low. More data for longer term and other types of bridges are needed to perform comprehensive analysis on the serviceability of railway bridges.

  • This study intends to construct scenic byway database and to examine and suggest social experiment of scenic byway. As basis work for the experiment of the scenic byway, we build database by using ITS standard node link management system. The DB includes scenic byway routes of Korea and Japan. The analyses show that the scenic byway in both nations consists of roads, reservation, road sign, vehicle number plate, and it was found that infrastructure and system are inadequate for scenic byway. These experiment can be effectively used for scenic byway in Korea and Japan as the basis data. The results of this experiment will be useful for plan and develop a scenic byway.

  • This study is a fundamental research to suggest a forecasting model for short-term railway passenger demand focusing on major lines (Gyeungbu, Honam, Jeonla, Janghang, Jungang) of Saemaeul rail and Mugunghwa rail. Also the author tried to verify the potential application of the proposed models. For this study, SARIMA model considering characteristics of seasonal trip is basically used, and daily mean forecasting models are independently constructed depending on weekday/weekend in order to consider characteristics of weekday/weekend trip and a legal holiday trip. Furthermore, intervention events having an impact on using the train such as introduction of new lines or EXPO are reflected in the model to increase reliability of the model. Finally, proposed models are confirmed to have high accuracy and reliability by verifying predictability of models. The proposed models of this research will be expected to utilize for establishing a plan for short-term operation of lines.

  • In Seoul, the subway system has been in use since 1974 and is the most frequently used travel mode accounting for approximately 40% of passenger journeys in 2015. As such the subway system is widely adopted by people and therefore, can have great impacts on their everyday life. However, it is easily noted that transit resources are not distributed spatially uniform, in other words, not all parts of the city gain the same benefits from their networks. This study aims to examine the inequity of spatial distribution of subway networks based on accessibility. Accessibility of subway networks are calculated based on the time-distance between stations and then equity is measured using the Gini index. Resulted map of subway accessibility shows that the benefits are not evenly distributed in Seoul with a pattern of highly accessible core - less accessible periphery areas. Also the subway accessibility network has fairer distribution against the employees' distribution rather than the distribution of general population or possibly transit dependent groups.

  • It is necessary to determine reliability indexes of existing railway bridges prior to setting up a proper target reliability index that can be used to introduce a reliability based limit state design method to design practice. Reliability is evaluated for a six PSC-I girder railway bridge, which is one of many representative types of double-track railway bridges. The reliability assessment is carried out for an edge girder subjected to bending moment. In the assessment, the flexural resistance and the fixed-load effect were obtained using existing statistical values from previous research on the introduction of limit state design to road bridge design. On the other hand, the live-load effect was determined using statistical values obtained from field measurement for the Joong-ang corridor, on which heavy freight trains are frequently passing. The reliability assessment is performed by AFOSM(Advanced First Order Second Moment method) for the limit state equation, and a sensitivity analysis for the reliability is performed for each factor of the load and resistance effects.
