  • Wholesaling is important industry that is remarkable by the function and characteristics of city. This paper aims at examing the recent changes in hierarchy of cities and city classifi-cation by wholesale activities in Korea. In order to grasp the stydy purpose, this paper is to analuze the changes of categories by wholesale industry, and to grasp the change in the city classification with city hierachy of wholesale sales in 1968, 1979, and 1991. The data were obtained from the statistics in the Census of Wholesale and Retail Trade published by the National Statistical Office, in 1969, 1981, and 1992. As the result of examination, the following finding were obtained: 1. Wholesaling has developed form that of production and consumption goods wholesale, especially 'Wholesaling of Farm Products, Foods and Beverages' to that of investment goods that is 'Wholesaling of Machinery and Equipment' and 'Wholesaling of Transport Equipment and Parts'. 2. Wholesaling has developed in the medium and small cities in 1970's, and in the larger cities in 1980's. And the concentration ratio of six larger cities were lower than another cities in terms of wholesale sales, especially Seoul and Pusan. 3. Recently with income increment and a purchasing power, city classification was changed by the increasing number of wholesale establi-shments of 'Automotive Parts and Tyres' in 1970's and of 'Office, Computing and Accounting Machines and Motor Vehicles' in 1980's.

  • This paper explores the relatilonship between state level environmental regulations and stocking and location decisions in the U.S livestock and poultry industry (beef, chicken, dairy and hogs), Rather than conduct this analysis on a species by species basis, the overall size of the livestock industry(expressed in animal units) and the size of Industry found on large, medium and small operations by state (48) and over time (29 years), which is panel data analysis, Generally, regulations seem to be induced by the structural change of industry; when industry creates externalities, regulators try to address them with policy tools to internalize them, Written regulatory stringency may not effect behavioral change; rather the state's willingness to enforce regulations seems to have a measurable influence. However, in the presence of rapid structural change, industry location is affected by written regulatory stringency. Policy enforcement activity was shown to influence inventory decisions in general and larger operations were found to be more sensitive to willingness to enforce than smaller operations.

  • To help a owner selecting proper contractors about the specified contract, the Evaluation and Public Announcing System of the Contractor's Construction Capacity has been introduced since 1997. But, the system has been done violence to its original meaning and purpose as time went on. When annually announcing the Contractor's Construction Capacity, especially, there was frequently a large range of opinion on the issues. On that account, MLTM(Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs) has had to make a alteration to improve those and is making efforts for a constructive policy now. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a basis study on the Integrated System after reflecting points to be considered about improvements and the current of the times.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the change in the distribution and hierarchical structure of commercial land use. Tools for analyzing the spatial structure are index of concentration, coefficient of localization and location quotient. This research is applied to Daegu, focusing on the period 1985-2003. During the 1985-2003 period, the growth rate of commercial land use volume amounted to 330%, compared with a population growth rate of 118%. The biggest component of commercial land use is the retail sector. As the lodging, medical, transportation-warehouse and entertainment sectors have the propensity for concentration and comprise the specialized commercial areas in the suburbs, the other sectors arc evenly distributed. Jung-gu has functioned as a downtown core in the hierarchical structure of commercial areas. So, in the structure of commercial land use, Daegu has continued to be a single nuclear structure. But, Dongdaegu Station influence area has evolved into the second order center since 2000. This is the sign of change in spatial structure from single-nuclear pattern to multi nuclear pattern.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the industrial structural changes and types of specialized in the shipbuilding cities, which are representative sectors of industrial city decline, and explore regional responses. Most cities designated as special areas for industrial crisis response in 2018 are specialized in shipbuilding. While the shift from prosperity to recession since the 2010s is the main factor, each city has responded differently to the industrial crisis. The analysis, targeting seven shipbuilding cities, shows that regions where large shipyards of major corporations with high industrial competitiveness are located have relatively less decline during business fluctuations, and there is a tendency for a decrease in industrial structural diversity during prosperous periods and an increase during recessionary periods. Based on the resistance and recoverability to industrial crises, the industrial paths of shipbuilding cities are classified into four types. Considering regional industrial structure and competitiveness, it is necessary to develop customized support strategies such as maintaining and declining shipbuilding industries and fostering new alternative industries.

  • The purpose of this study is to use the EGARCH model and Granger causality test to analyze how the change in the BDI affects the Korean stock price volatility. The main analysis results are summarized as follows. First, according to the results of the mean equation, the change in the BDI is significant in large-cap stocks, as well as in the manufacturing, service, and chemistry indexes, but not in others. This implies that the Korean stock market does not respond appropriately to the maritime market situation; further, the increase in demand for raw materials has not led to a real economic recovery. Second, in the result of the variance equation, the coefficient on the change in the BDI is negative(-), and the change in the BDI is significant for all size indexes. Particularly, the change in the BDI has a greater impact on the volatility of small-cap stocks than that of large-cap stocks. The results of the analysis of the sector indexes were statistically significant for the service, financial, construction, and electric and electronics industries, but not for the manufacturing and chemical industries. In particular, the changes in the BDI have the greatest impact on the construction industry. Third, according to the Granger causality test results, the change in the BDI leads the financial industry and construction industry. There is, however, no relationship between the BDI and the other indexes. This shows that change in the shipping freight index can be used to predict the volatility in the Korean stock market. This can help investors and policymakers make better decisions.

  • Despite extensive discussions on the repercussions of the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lack of analysis on the relationships and changes in relationships between business districts Therefore, this study aims to understand the impact of COVID-19 on retail business districts in Seoul by considering the geographical dependency and interactions of these districts. Using data from the fourth quarters of 2019 to 2021 for 1,490 retail business districts in Seoul, we employed the 3-Stage Least Squares (3SLS) estimation method for simultaneous equation modeling to empirically examine how spatial dependencies among retail business districts in Seoul have evolved due to the influence of COVID-19. The results indicate the existence of spatial dependence among retail business districts in Seoul, with developmental districts exerting a negative influence on nearby districts. Furthermore, the analysis reveals changes in dependency patterns after the onset of COVID-19, interpreted as a decrease in commercial activities in developmental districts due to the impact of the pandemic. The significance of this study lies in providing new insights into Seoul's retail business districts through a spatially dependent analysis, offering a foundation for various stakeholders, including government, local authorities, and small business owners, to respond appropriately to changes in business districts by considering their interrelationships.

  • There has been emerging general agreement on the relative importance of producer services in a economy. This research describes the spatial patterns and trends in producer services at different spatial scales. The other research aim is to explain the impacts of producer services on spatial changes at the national level and at the intra-metropolitan level in Seoul. Producer services have highly concentrated in metropolises, especially Seoul. Between 1986 to 2001, an important spatial change in the producer services at the national level has been their growth in the Capital Region, reinforcing the role and function of Seoul. This reinforced role of Seoul is closely related to its competitive advantages arising from economies of urban. There have been some dramatic changes in the location of producer services within Seoul. The most important change was the growth of the Youngdong area, previously a sub-center for businesses, as the most important location for producer services, exceeding the previous dominant role of the CBD area. The changing urban form of Seoul is partly related to the onset of some diseconomies of urbanization in the CBD, while at the same time Youngdong has reached a stage at which it is benefiting from the agglomeration of a variety of firms, in addition to a favourable social and physical infrastructure.

  • Korean input-output tables for 1975 and 1985 are first deflated into 1975 constant domestic prices(hypothetical terms), and the constant price I-O data are used to decompose the sources of industrial growth and structural change during the 1975-85 period. Using the same methodology, our results for the 1975-85 period are then linked to the results for the earlier period(1955-75) in order to analyze and evaluate the "demand-side" sources of industrialization over the past three decades. The results from the decomposition of the whole economy indicate that over three decades(1955-85) the relative contribution of domestic demand expansion (DDE) to growth and structural change has continuously declined while the contribution of export expansion(EE) has generally continued to rise. The contribution of import-substitution(IS) which had been significantly higher than that of EE during 1955-63 declined substantially, remaining at an insignificantly low level during the period following 1963. Although it is well known that the government's industrial policy in the 1970s emphasized import-substitution in heavy and chemical industries, no significant changes in the export-oriented growth pattern could be observed even for that period, except for a minor decline in the relative contribution of EE. This may be attributed to the substantially larger, backward-linkage effects of EE than that of IS. The sources-of-growth decompositions for major branches of the manufacturing sector generally support the major conclusions derived from the decomposition for the whole economy. The IS contribution which had been significantly high in almost all manufacturing branches during the 1955-63 period declined to low levels in all but two branches, heavy industry and machinery, during the following period. On the other hand, the relative contribution of EE showed a continuous rise in almost all manufacturing branches(except food processing). Finally, the sources of growth for 1975-85 which were decomposed by detailed sub branches, are analyzed by correlating them with changes in relative prices and industrial protection rates by sub-branches for the same period. A major result is that contrary to general expectations, the EE contributions by sub-branch are not negatively correlated with the nominal rates of protection and/or the effective rates of protection for the same sub-branches. It is also found that no statistically significant, positive correlation exists between IS contributions and nominal protection rates or effective protection rates. These unexpected results may be explained by the peculiar nature of the Korean system of industrial incentives for the past period.

  • This study measures the relative efficiency and productivity change of IT firms received policy fund using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2006-2007. The main results of this study can by summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2006-2007, the number of efficient firms(CCR value is one) are six firms, six firms, respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2006-2007, the number of efficient firms(BCC value is one) are eleven firms, thirteen firms respectively. Third, In case of return to scale for 2006-2007, DRS are fifteen firms and fourteen firms respectively. IRS are two firms and one firm respectively. DRS firms can improve efficiency by the reduction of scale and IRS Firms can improve efficiency by the increase of scale. Fourth, Mean value of Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2006-2007 are bigger than 1.00. This imply that productivity increase was achieved.
