  • The current study aims to examine differences of mother's child-rearing attitude by background variables of infant's and mothers, the influence of mother's child-rearing attitude, temperament and goodness of fit of infant's on adjustment to childcare center, and relative influence among elements. Subjects for the study were 165 infant's of two year old attending 8 childcare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Jeju-do, and their mothers and homeroom teachers at childcare centers. As a result of the study, it was found that there was no difference in background variables such as sex and order among siblings of infant's, childcare experience and average hours at childcare centers a day, and mother's age and job, while there were differences in mother's child-rearing attitude by mother's education, household's monthly income and mother's working hours per week. Also it was observed that mother's restrictive attitude, positive attitude and infant's regular temperament influenced their adjustment to childcare centers, and relatively influential elements on general adjustment to childcare centers were mother's restrictive attitude and positive attitude. That IS, it was found that as mother's restrictive attitude and positive attitude were high, infant's general adjustment to childcare centers became high. These study results show that if infant's learn basic rules and habits from parents at home by having positive relationship with mothers, getting appropriate educative instruction, having proper autonomy and obtaining positive assessment from their mothers, rather than strict restriction or bluff, can adapt themselves to childcare centers with no difficulty.

  • This study examined the relationships between parenting stress, parenting sense of competence, and parenting behavior in Korean and Japanese mothers of early school-aged children. A sample of 166 Korean mothers and 112 Japanese mothers completed questionnaires. First, in terms of results, Korean mothers reported higher scores in parenting stress, parenting sense of competence, and warmth and neglect than Japanese mothers did. In contrast, Japanese mothers scored higher on intrusiveness than Korean mothers. Second, for both groups, parenting stress was negatively related to warmth and reasoning, and positively related to intrusiveness, coercion, and neglect. Third, for both groups, parenting sense of competence was positively linked to warmth and reasoning, and negatively linked to intrusiveness, coercion, and neglect. Fourth, parenting stress was negatively associated with parenting sense of competence for both groups. Finally, parenting sense of competence mediated the associations between parenting stress and warmth for both groups. Only in the case of Korean mothers did parenting stress influence reasoning and intrusiveness through parenting sense of competence. These results imply that there may indeed be cross-cultural similarities and differences in three parenting-related variables between Korean and Japanese mothers.

Second, there were differences between employed mothers and unemployed ones because mother-child interaction did not affect significant influences to child internalizing, externalizing problem behaviors in case of employed mothers, but child internalizing, externalizing problem behaviors were turned up to be increased as much as mother-child interaction was larger by affecting significant influences in case of unemployed mothers. Based on above finding, this study has a meaning in that it provides a basic data which could be actually utilized to parent education program in order to prevent various problem behaviors of children or child & family counseling field.

We compared the differences between patients and normal control regarding the co-morbidity, and mothering attitude using CBCL(Child Behavioral Check List) and MBRI(Mothering Behavior Rating Instrument). And we also evaluated the influence of types of tic disorder and the presence of behavioral characteristics of the tic patients. The following results were obtained. 1) The sex ration was 5.9:1, male dominant. 2) The eldest children were being twice as many as the youngest children(eldest : youngest : single=4.7 : 1.7 : 1). 3) The eldest children tended to have earlier onset than others. 4) The tic children as a whole had more accompanying behavioral problems than the normal children according to the CBCL scales' scores. 5) The mothers of tic children had more negative view of their children, more rejecting and more hostile attitude toward their children. 6) The types of tic disorder(the Tourette disorder vs chronic moter tic disorder) did not make a difference in the incidence of behavior problems. 7) Those who had attentional problems regardless the types of tic had more behavioral problems than those who had not. 8) Those who had familial loadings of tic disorder tended to have more likely Tourette disorders than chronic tic disorders.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze papers on child rearing in Korea and to suggest future research and nursing practice directions for child rearing. Methods: An on-line search via 5 web sites yielded 201 research papers. The analysis of key concepts was based on the attributes of parenting and type of knowledge held by the parents. Results: The research papers found in the search were 27.3% experimental and 72.7% non-experimental. Among the participants, 77.0% of parents raising the child were mothers and the children were mostly young children under the age of one year. Types of knowledge related to child rearing varied widely, but explanatory knowledge (55.2%) was the most common, followed by prescriptive knowledge (30.0%) and descriptive knowledge (14.8%). For attributes of parenting, reaction to parenting (49.9%) followed by parenting behavior/practice (43.1%) was most common. Conclusion: Findings of this study indicate that further research is necessary regarding fathers and surrogate caregivers and on prescriptive knowledge for health promotion of children at different developmental stages. Also the results suggest a need for research toward developing child care policies.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental beliefs, efficacy and stress on mother's parenting behaviors. The subjects were 243 mothers of two to three-Year-old children in Seoul. The main results showed that parental beliefs, efficacy and stress were significantly related with parenting behaviors. That is, the resets of mutiple regression analysis indicated that parental efficacy, beliefs and stress were significant variables predicting mother's parenting behavior. However, the predictive powers of these variables were different depending on the characteristics of parenting behaviors. And the relationship between mother's parental stress and parenting behaviors was mediated by mother's parental efficacy. To conclude, mother's cognitions such as parental beliefs, parental efficacy, and a perception of parenting stress turned out to be the vital factors in predicting parenting behaviors.

  • Parenting knowledge is regarded as an important variable influencing parenting style. This study investigated the parenting knowledge of mothers with infants and analyzed how this knowledge influenced their parenting style. The mothers’ parenting efficacy was included in the analysis as a mediator between parenting knowledge and parenting style. Three hundred and seventy-five mothers with infants completed questionnaires regarding parenting knowledge, parenting efficacy, and parenting style. The results showed that the mothers reported different scores in subcategories of parenting knowledge, in which the highest scores were in knowledge about rearing behavior and the lowest were in the developmental process. Second, there were differences in parenting knowledge scores according to the age, employment status, and educational level of subjects. Third, subjects with the more accurate parenting knowledge reported more positive parenting efficacy and parenting style. Lastly, parenting efficacy completely mediated between parenting knowledge and parenting style.
