  • In order to assess the fault behavior by the geometric analysis of fault slip, the study area between Yangsan city and Shinkwang-myon, Pohang city along the strike of the Yangsan fault is divided into 5 domains($A{\sim}E$ domains) based on the strike change of main fault, the type of fault termination, the cyclic variation of fault zone width, deformation pattern of fault rocks and angular deviation of secondary shears. And, we would apply the relationship between the mode of fault sliding and the resultant deformation texture obtained from previous several experimental studies of simulated fault gouge to the study of the Yangsan fault. To understand sliding behavior of the fault we measured the data of fault attitude and fault slip, and analyzed relationships between the main fault and secondary Riedel shear along the Yangsan fault. The sliding behavioral patterns in each section were analyzed as followings; the straight sections of A, D and E domains were analyzed as the creeping section of stably sliding. In contrast, the curved section of B domain was analyzed as the locked section of stick-slip movement.

  • Here we firstly present that a timing of reactivated event of Yangsan fault, the major fault in the southeastern Korean Peninsula, by using combined approaches of the optimized illite-polytype quantification, the K-Ar age-dating, and the recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach for the fault clays from Sangcheon-ri area of Yangsan main fault line. Two chronological record of brittle fault-activation event at about 41.5~43.5 and 50.7 Ma were determined from 3 fault gouges suggesting a crucial reactivation time-scheme. Furthermore, the regional processes that drive tectonics to form and reactivate the Yangsan fault may be explained from the chronological analysis for additional sites along the Yangsan fault.

  • It is a trend that carbonated drink intake among adolescents is increasing, which makes young people more vulnerable to dental erosion. However, in Korea, public knowledge about dental erosion is very insufficient. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental erosion and to assess its risk indicators among 13-15 years old students in Yangsan, Korea. A total of 1,371 adolescents were examined by one calibrated clinician. Dental erosion was assessed by using the Visual Erosion Dental Examination system. Correlation between their dietary habit, oral hygiene and dental erosion was assessed. The data showed that 676 (49.3%) adolescents had dental erosion. The prevalence of dental erosion was significantly higher in females than in males. The prevalence of tooth erosion in mandible is higher than in maxilla. Dental erosion was generalized to develop mostly on anterior teeth, especially lateral incisor, however, the severity score was highest in canines. Following questionnaire analysis, dental erosion was significantly associated with milk and flavored milk. No other associations were detected. The prevalence of dental erosion in this study is higher than those of previous reports. On the contrary to previously reported studies, the prevalence of dental erosion in females is higher than in males.

  • The purpose of this research is to find the visual characteristics and geographic structure in a landscape of mountains in Yangsan City. In order to carry out this study, 40 view points of 6 mountains in Yangsan City were selected to experience the mountainscape. The results are as follows. The mountainscape of Yangsan City was confirmed from the view point to the object of view as ranging in middle distance reverse, the angle of elevation 11${\sim}13^{\circ}$ which give the impression of confronted to the mountain, and the horizontal angle 50${\sim}90^{\circ}$ which gives the impression of vastness. This shows that mountainscapes are perceived impressively when seeing the mountain with the meaning to feel the texture of the mountain as a confrontational relationship rather than a pictorial relationship. The geographic structure of the view point which occurs in scenes of impressive experience is classified into eight types and its characteristics are investigated. The first type is corridor, and it emerges in a long narrow linear structure made from the surrounding environment with buildings or street trees. The second is tunnel in which a vision and light hidden while passing underneath a bridge, high-level road, or inside a tunnel can be seen. Third, the maze is formed by the mountain shape. The hill spur emerges when the direction of traffic changes after turning the coner of a building or mountain edge. The hill ground emerges at the top of a hill slope. Next, parallel emerges when the observer and the mountain are in the same direction of process. Confrontation occurs when confronting an isolated mountain. Finally, the view point emerges when passing through major points such as a bridge or square and the boundary of a village or city. This research arranged visual conditions that create impressive mountainscapes. Geographic characteristics in terms of Types that make possible to experience mountainscapes were described. The results of this research will be basic data collected for the management and preservation of mountainscapes and for landscape effect evaluation. Furthermore, this research suggests theoretical evidence to preserve and manage geographic structures that create view experiences as well as to preserve the landscape in terms of view points.

  • The study area is a tunnelling section passing through the Yangsan Fault zone. Kyungbu express highway and national road 35 are located above the tunnel. Previous study showed that fault gouge and fault breccia were widely distributed in the tunnelling section with a maximum width of 100 m. From the present study, it is found that sedimentary rocks consisting mainly of shale are distributed at the eastern block of the Yangsan Fault and these rocks are not subject to mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alteration. On the other hand, dacitic tuff distributed at the western block of the Yangsan Fault is largely affected by mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alteration. The large fault zone of $50{\sim}130m$ width was formed by complex processes of mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations such as chloritization, sericitization, and kaolinization. Based on the characteristics of mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations, the Yangsan fault zone in the study area is geotechnically classified as four zones: unaltered zone, altered zone, altered fractured zone, and fault gouge zone. These zones show different degrees and aspects in mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations, resulting in different engineering properties.

  • Mt. Hee-yang is located in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Through the analysis and interpretations of twenty-two different ancient writings which covers Mt. Hee-yang, and three times of field studies, I tried to analyze the cognition of our ancestors in those days regarding Mt. Hee-yang. Since Mt. Hee-yang goes very deep in the mountain range, Mt. Hee-yang was recognized as appropriate place for seclusion or operating Byeolseo. From the era of Silla, in terms of Fengshui, Mt. Hee-yang was also interpreted as an image of either a phoenix flying into the sky(鳳凰登天) or a valley of a phoenix and dragon(鳳巖龍谷). This cognition comes from its formations of topographical features, and continued to the era of Joseon Dynasty. The purposes of excursion were to retrace the course of predecessors, to attain one's long-cherished desire to visit, or to enjoy holidays. From the analysis of Mt. Hee-yang's visitors, the average social status of them is lowered a lot around the end of Joseon Dynasty, compared with the early period of Joseon Dynasty. Studying the visitor's route of Mt. Hee-yang, I could see the places that are highly-recognized were the top of Mt. Hee-yang, Seonyudong(仙遊洞), Bakundae(白雲臺), Yayuam(夜遊岩). Mt. Hee-yang was recognized as Sun-kyung(仙境) where Sin-seon(a taoist hermit with miraculous powers; the sage of old) lives, and mostly it was main destination of visit while Bakundae(白雲臺) was perceived diversely on each visitor because of its strange scenery.
