The Comparison of Spray Characteristics between FOOF and FOF Injectors used in Liquid Rockets (액체로켓용 FOOF와 FOF 인젝터의 분무특성 비교)

  • Triplet(FOF or OFO) injectors are commonly applied to liquid rockets which use LOX and hydrocarbon propellants. The FOF type injector has been known to have an advantage for the although to show lower combustion performance as compared by the OFO type. However, a large disparity between oxidizer and fuel orifice diameters of the FOF type injector may reduce both the combustion efficiency and stability so that as FOOF split triplet injector which splits a single oxidizer orifice into double orifices was designed. In the present study, spray characteristics of the FOOF injector were investigated and compared with those of the FOF injector undo. cold flow conditions. Mass distributions of oxidizer and fuel for both injectors were measured by using a PLLIF (Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence)technique, and each drop size was also measured by using an instantaneous photographic method. From the experimental results, we found out that FOOF shows more stable mixing efficiencies than the FOF. As for the drop size of both oxidizer and fuel, there was not a large difference between two injector types.

Development and Launching Test of 10N Class Liquid Propellant Rocket (10뉴턴급 추진력의 액체로켓 개발 및 발사시험)

  • In this paper, a 10N class liquid propellant rocket utilizing a dissolving reaction of hydrogen peroxide is constructed and tested. Through a series of designs, seven orifices with a diameter of 200 ${\mu}m$ and a nozzle with a neck of 2.5mm in diameter and area ratio of 2.56 were made. The platinum coated on Isolite was used for catalyst. 90wt% peroxide pressed at 20 bar by nitrogen gas was used for performance evaluation. The length of the catalyst bed and the load of platinum was taken as the parameters for this experiment. For the catalyst support length of 4cm loaded on 5wt% platinum, satisfactory $c^*$ efficiency and stable thrust was observed. The light weight body of the rocket was composed of aluminum. Rocket rose about 10m with relatively constant velocity in launching test.

Antibacterial effect of electrolyzed water on Streptococcus mutans (전기분해수소수의 Streptococcus mutans에 대한 항균효과)

  • Objectives: Electrolyzed water has been proven to have antibacterial effects against various microorganisms. However, there are only a few studies about effects of electrolyzed water on oral bacteria. The purpose of this study was to examine the antibacterial effect of electrolyzed water on Streptococcus mutans in vitro. Methods: S. mutans KCOM 1054 was treated with electrolyzed water for 1 or 3 minutes and plated on Mitis Salivarius agar with 15% sucrose and bacitracin. After incubation for 48 hours, colony forming units (CFU) were counted, and dental plaque was quantified by crystal violet staining. Results: The growth of S. mutans was significantly inhibited by electrolyzed water (p<0.001). In addition, the dental plaque formation by S. mutans was decreased in a time-dependent manner by exposure to electrolyzed water (p<0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that electrolyzed water can effectively prevent dental caries by inhibiting growth of (and the formation of dental plaque by) S. mutans.

  • Researches on hypersonic aircraft technologies have been carried out to increase flight speeds. However, increase in flight speeds causes heat loads that could lead structural change of aircraft's component. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical condition of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

  • In this study, an experimental investigation is performed for evaluation of a liquid pool spreading model with continuous release. The model considered in this study was developed based on a concept which means that the liquid pool spreading is governed by a balance between an inertia force from gravity and a frictional force from friction with the ground under the whole base of the liquid pool. For evaluation of the model, experimental study is performed. Experimental apparatus is setup for measuring release rate, spreading velocity, and evaporation rate from a liquid pool. The experimental results are compared with results from the model. By applying release and evaporation rates obtained from experiments to solving the model, liquid pool radius variation according to time can be obtained. For evaluation of an effect of friction force in the spreading model, results obtained from the models with and without the friction force are compared with those obtained from the experiments. As a result, it is shown that there exists a large deviation between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results. On the other hand, the tendency of liquid pool radius variation according to time is similar between the results obtained from the model without the friction force and the experimental results.

  • We investigated the electrochemical properties of lithium/molybdenum sulfide(Li/MoS$_2$) using tetra (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether(TEGDME) electrolyte. The Li/TEGDME/MoS$_2$ cell showed the first discharge capacity of 288mAhg$^{-1}$. From the XRD, SEM results of the MOS$_2$ electrode in various cut-off voltage during charge-discharge process, MoS$_2$ partly changed into Li$_2$S and Mo during discharge and Li$_2$S partly recovered into MOS$_2$ and Li during charge. Full charged MOS$_2$ electrode showed lump shape of big size, which might be related to agglomerate of MoS$_2$ particles. Therefore, the degradation might be related to decrease of active material for electrochemical reaction by agglomeration of MOS$_2$.

  • Recently, direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFC) among direct liquid fuel cells is studied actively. Economical hydrocarbon membranes alternative to fluorinated membranes for DFAFC's membrane are receiving attention. In this study, characteristics of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone, sPEEK) and sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone, PAES) membranes were compared with Nafion membrane at DFAFC operation condition. Formic acid crossover current density of hydrocarbon membranes were lower than that of Nafion 211 fluorinated membrane. I-V performance of sPEEK MEA(Membrane and Electrode Assembly) was similar to that of Nafion 211 MEA due to similar membrane resistance each other. sPEEK MEA with low formic acid crossover showed higher stability compared with Nafion 211 MEA.

  • In this research, the initial sizing of a HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) UAV which uses solar power and hydrogen fuel cell as an alternative energy was performed. Instead of a wing box type, a glider type was chosen since it is relatively easy to get a data thanks to many researches abroad. Maximum takeoff weight is around 150Kg and the propulsion system is composed of motor, propeller, solar cell, and hydrogen fuel cell which can be recharged through electrolysis. Maximum takeoff weight was estimated as aspect ratio, wing span, wing area change while considering energy balance of required energy which is necessary for flight during the entire day and available energy which can be taken from the solar cell.

[ $SO_2/O_2$ ] Separation with [DMIm]$MeSO_4$ in IS Cycle (IS cycle에서의 [DMIm]$MeSO_4$를 이용한 $SO_2/O_2$ 분리)

  • The feasibility of ionic liquid as a novel absorbent of $SO_2$ for the separation of $SO_2$ from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture in the thermochemical IS(Iodine-Sulfur) cycle was investigated. 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylsulfate ([DMIm]$MeSO_4$) had shown twenty five times higher solubility of $SO_2$ than that of $O_2$. The dependence of $SO_2$ solubility by [DMIm]$MeSO_4$ on temperature and $SO_2$ partial pressure was examined, which confirmed the possibility of temperature and pressure swing for the separation process. Through cyclic absorption and desorption with temperature swing the stability of [DMIm]$MeSO_4$ in the separation process was also demonstrated. As a result of the experiments carried out, $SO_2$ separation from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture with ionic liquid([DMIm]$MeSO_4$) can be applied to the thermochemical IS cycle.

A study on the Capacity Fading Mechanism of Sulfur Cathode Depending on Discharge Potential for Li Rechargeable Battery (Li 이차전지용 유황 양극의 방전 전위에 따른 퇴화거동에 관한 연구)

  • 유황 양 전극과 액체 전해질, 리튬 금속을 음극으로 사용한 리튬 유황 전지를 제조하여 그 특성을 조사하였다. 유황 전극은 유황파우더와 carbon black 을 도전재로, 그리고 바인더로 PVdF를 사용하여 제조하였다. 이렇게 제조된 셀은 두개의 다른 전압 구간에서 충방전 실험을 행하였다. 첫 번째 셀은 $S_8+{\chi}Li{\leftrightarrow}Li_2S_x(X=4{\sim}12)$ 반응만을 일어나 게 하기 위하여 2.1V 와 2.5V 사이에서, 그리고 두 번째 셀은 $Li_2S_x+{\chi}Li{\leftrightarrow}Li_2S(x=2{\sim}4)$의 반응만을 일어나게 하기 위하여 1.5V 와 2.5V 에서 충방전 하였다. 그 결과 첫 번째 셀이 더 좋은 싸이클 특성을 가지는 것을 확인 탈 수 있었다. 각 전압구간에서 각 셀이 충방전 되는 동안, 전해질 내로 녹아난 유황의 양은 큰 차치가 없는 것을 확인하였다. 그리고, 전압에 따른 전극의 임피던스를 측정한 결과, 방전이 끝난 후 큰 저항성분이 새로 생긴 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이는 사이클이 진행된 후의 전극표면을 SEM 분석을 행한 결과로부터 사이클이 진행된 후 전극 표면에 최종 반응 산물인 $Li_2S$ 가 피막형태로 형성된것을 확인 할 수 있었다.
