  • The moisture absorption rate and structural strength changes of oven-cured composite skin based on closed molds were studied. Moisture absorption was performed on specimens with and without filler applied. The specimens were exposed to moisture for up to 231 days. Tensile and compression tests were conducted with and without filler application. As a result of the test, the moisture absorption rates of the tensile and compressive specimens without filler were 2.4 and 0.3% higher, respectively, than those with the filler applied. The tensile and compressive strengths of the specimen without filler applied were average 305 MPa and 139 MPa, respectively, and the tensile and compressive strengths of the specimen with filler applied were 313 MPa and 166 MPa, respectively, appeared high.

  • The unconfined compressive strength of soil-cement mixed with red mud, an industrial by-product of alumina production, was investigated in the laboratory. The investigation involved laboratory tests under the various conditions such as red mud content, cement content, fly ash content and ratio of soil replacement with sands. The unconfined compressive strength tests were performed at 7, 14 and 21 days after specimen preparation. Results of the study show that the unconfined compressive strength increased as red mud and fly ash content decreased and cement content increased. Increasing the soil replacement ratio with sands had an insignificant effect on compressive strength because the soil had a similar particle size as the replacement sands.

  • There are few attempts to estimate the strength and stiffness of controlled low strength material (CLSM) using existing field-testing methods. The objective of this study is to evaluate the resilient modulus of CLSM by using the Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) and investigate the relationships between the resilient modulus from LWD and the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and secant modulus of elasticity from unconfined compressive test. Five CLSMs with different mix designs are used to evaluate the flowability and the stiffening of the CLSM in the flow and Vicat needle tests, respectively. To evaluate the early strength and stiffness characteristics, unconfined compressive tests are performed using the CLSM specimens cured for 1 and 7 days. LWD tests are carried out to estimate the resilient modulus of the CLSM specimens. The experimental results show that for the curing time of 1 day, the UCS and secant modulus of elasticity generally increase with the fast setting mortar content (FC). The CLSM specimen with the highest FC shows the significant increase in the UCS and secant modulus of elasticity along the curing time. Overall, the resilient modulus for the curing time of 1 day increases with the FC, while that for the curing time of 7days decreases with an increase in the FC. From the results, the linear relationships between the resilient modulus and UCS and secant modulus of elasticity are established.

  • Outer tank concretes of LNG storage tank are composed of prestressed concrete structures that act as a protective wall. The danger such as the collapse of structures will exist if concrete structures is not secured due to the deterioration. Concrete compressive strength directly related to the safety of structures can be predicted by using estimation equation of compressive strength through rebound hardness test and ultrasonic wave velocity method. But, there is no the estimation equation of LNG storage tank for a relation between NDT data and real strength. In this study, to obtain more accurate real strengths for LNG storage tank, core specimens were sampled from walls of pilot LNG storage tank. The rebound hardness test of general NDT for concrete structures was carried out at each 3 positions for the four areas. The compressive strength estimation equation of LNG storage tank was developed by using the data for rebound hardness test of pilot LNG storage tank and compressive strength test of sampled concrete cores.

  • Nondestructive strength Equations are commonly used to determine the strength of concrete. However, the application of the existing equations may include many errors because this method is proposed on the basis of limited experimental parameters while actual bridges have various parameters such as conditions of concrete mixtures, properties of concrete strength, etc. Also, the error among the existing equations causes the confusion when engineers select the proper estimation equation for the concerned bridge. In this study, a series of the field inspection and the test have been performed on 297 existing bridges, in order to evaluate the bridges, based on the test results of the in-depth inspection, and the estimated strengths by means of the nondestructive strength equations are analyzed and compared with results of the core specimen strengths. According to results of analyses, the nondestructive strength equation proposed by CNDT Committee of Architectural Institute of Japan had high relationship with core strength. However, the strengths predicted by this equation, are underestimated when concrete's strengths are over 30 MPa, otherwise, they are overestimated. Also in this paper, based on the relationship between the estimated nondestructive concrete strengths and the core specimen strengths the modified strength equation through simple correlation analysis is proposed.

  • The main object of this paper is to investigate the effects of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of natural sand concrete(NSC) and crushed sand concrete(CSC). Test samples were exposed to high temperature ranging from $200^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. After exposure, various tests were conducted. Color image analysis and weight losses were determined and compressive strength test and splitting tensile strength test were conducted. The results indicated that weight losses increased as exposure temperature increased with comparable decreasing rate. The results also showed that compressive strength and splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity decreased as exposure temperature increased. The results also showed that residual compressive strength of NSC decreased more drastically than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. Residual splitting tensile strength of NSC decreased more than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$, while NSC and CSC showed comparable residual strength ratio at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • Isotropic rock and anisotropic rock have different tensile strength which has the greatest influence on rock failure. In this study, elastic modulus of anisotropic rock is obtained through uniaxial compression test, and tensile strength and tension failure behavior are analyzed through indirect tensile strength test. Stress concentration factor of a specimen at the center is obtained from anisotropic elastic modulus and strain by indirect tensile strength test. Theoretical solutions for tensile strength of isotropic and anisotropic rock are compared. Stress concentration factor of anisotropic rock is either higher or lower than isotropic rock depending on the inclination angle of bedding plane. The use of stress concentration factor of isotropic rock resulted in overestimation or underestimation of tensile strength.

  • Rebound hammer test, SonReb method and concrete core test are most useful testing methods for estimate the concrete compressive strength of deteriorated concrete structures. But the accuracy of the NDE results on the existing structures could be reduced by the effects of the uncertainty of nondestructive test methods, material effects by aging and carbonation, and mechanical damage by drilling of core. In this study, empirical procedure for verifying the in-situ compressive strength of concrete is suggested through the probabilistic analysis on the 268 data of rebound and ultra-pulse velocity and core strengths obtained from 106 bridges. To enhance the accuracy of predicted concrete strength, the coefficients of core strength, and surface hardness caused by ageing or carbonation was adopted. From the results, the proposed equation by KISTEC and the estimation procedures proposed by authors is reliable than previously suggested equation and correction coefficient.

  • An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the compressive strength, flexural strength, equivalent bending strength, rebound rate of shotcrete according to silicate accelerator, aluminate accelerator, cement mineral accelerator respectively and to especially evaluate the performance of shotcrete using cement mineral accelerator for high quality. The test result of compressive strength was showed that all accelerators were satisfied the required test value for each age, for the requirement of having the $75\%$ or higher compressive strength ratio to plain concretes at 28 days, cement mineral accelerator with $87\%$ compressive strength ratio was only satisfied. In flexural strength test, cement mineral accelerator was satisfied the flexural strength requirement in steel fiber reinforced shotcrete for each age. Aluminate type was conformed to the requirement for 28 days, but not at 1 day, silicate type was failed to satisfy standard requirement. Rebound rate was measured between $11{\~}19\%$ and cement mineral accelerator was showed comparatively lower rebound rate. Based on the test results, cement mineral accelerator exhibited excellent strength improvement and lower rebound rate compared to the conventional accelerator, its result is showed the possibility of making high performance shotcrete.
