  • The radial mapping rule in bounding surface model was experimentally investigated by analyzing the drained stress probe tests on Chicago clays. The experimental data obtained from 10 drained stress probe paths were analyzed to calculate the directions of the plastic strain increments. The anisotropic bounding surface model was adopted to represent a bounding yield surface which resides in the pre-consolidation yield stress of undisturbed clays. The projection origins were estimated by finding the interceptions of the straight lines passing through the current stress point and the imaginary yield stress point on the bounding surface. The results show that the projection origin is not fixed at a point but moves toward the direction of the stress probe path after it is established around the initial stress point.

  • Stone column is the method that replace soft ground such as weak clay and loose sand with gravel or crushed stone which has relatively high stiffness and low compressive. Stone column increases bearing capacity of the soft ground, reduces settlement, produces ground improvement effect by consolidation drain, and is effective to prevent soil liquefaction in sandy ground during an earthquake. Stone column has been used in many civil works, and has recorded quite a lot of construction achievement internationally, but there is no standardized settlement calculation method yet. Therefore, in this study, the applicability of the existing theoretical equations were evaluated through comparison and analysis to predict a reasonable settlement of the Stone column. Consequently, Hook's law formula was verified to be the most close to numerical analysis.

  • The undrained strength of soils is open determined from the results of the piezocone penetration. The reliability of the value of the undrained strength lies on the cone factor value, whose evaluation needs a lot of experimental data and investigation for each site. In this study, the cone factors were evaluated for the northeastern part of Shiwha area in Gyunggi province using the experimental data of the field vane, unconfined compression, and UU triaxial compression tests. The values of the conventional cone factors $N_{kt}$, $N_{ke}$, $N_{{\Delta}u}$, and the new factor $N_e$ were determined to be 12, 11, 3, and 13, respectively. It was observed that there is a remarkable relationship between $N_{{\Delta}u}$ and the pore pressure ratio Bq.

  • In this study, effects of the density of soil and the confining pressure applied to the soil sample on the elastic moduli of subgrade soils are experimentally analyzed. Through investigation of subgrade materials of domestic expressways, five typical types of subgrade soils are selected for the experiments. A series of unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests is performed on samples prepared with various water contents and densities at the confining pressures of 1.02, 2.04, and $3.06kg/cm^2$. Initial tangent modulus is inferred from the unloading-reloading portion of the stress strain curve obtained during an individual loading-unloading-reloading test. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the effect of the confining pressure on the elastic modulus of subgrade material is well consistent with the equation proposed by Janbu, and that the elastic modulus can be related to the dry unit weight expressing the Janbu constants as exponentiial functions of it. It is also found that the water content has little effect on the elastic modulus for the samples with the degree of saturation less than 70%.

  • Ridge traversing trail in Mount Jiri National Park is classified as flat, gully-like, unilateral, and asymmetric bilateral, paths based on a location and gradient of paths. These types are interchangeable due to a drainage condition of trail surfaces. Using a rapid survey, the trail is 135.9 cm wide, 23.6 cm deep and $5.1^{\circ}$ in a gradient, respectively. All treads have been compacted due to human trampling. The path width is affected by a slope aspect and a distribution of Sasa borealis. An asymmetric path is wider than a symmetric path. A soil erosion rate is equivalent to $68.9cm^2/year$ for the period from 1960 to 2009, suggesting that the trail has been widened 2.7 cm/year and the tread lowered 0.4 cm/year. Trampling and needle ice action combined with rainwash induced by a pipeflow are dominant erosion processes contributing to the trail expansion.

  • This study aims at evaluating the engineering properties of very poor graded fine sands deposited on the sea. Using materials sampled at SAEMANKEUM area, a series of rowe cell consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests are conducted in order to evaluate the characteristics of deformation and shear strength by the relative density. Prior to those tests, a maximum and a minimum relative densities are obtained. As a result, it appears that the minimum void ratio is 0.88, and the maximum compactible relative density is about 71%. In addition, internal frictional angle appears to increase linearly with an increase of the relative density which is similar to that of the port KUNJANG.

  • Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of foundation built on the reinforced soil. The granular compaction group piles also accelerate the consolidation of the soft ground and prevent the liquefaction caused by earthquake using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful method in Korea. In the present study, the optimum locations of granular compaction group piles using genetic algorithm are proposed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of the group piles. Also, the optimum design for total weight of granular compaction group piles was carried out in consideration of the economical efficiency and parametric studies were performed to examine the effects of parameters at the design of granular compaction group piles.

  • As construction cases of structure are increasing in the soft ground, the necessity of ground improvement is also increasing. Granular pile is one of the improvement methods for soft ground and for loose sandy soil. In domestic, SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method using sand material has been mainly used to improve soft ground, but Granular pile with crushed-stone was not used much. However, alternative material such as crushed-stone is needed to substitute for sand due to the environmental and economical problems. In this study, staged load test and consolidation test were performed in the laboratory to observe the behavior of soft ground improved by Granular pile. In order to evaluate the characteristics such as bearing capacity, drainage, md settlement, sand and crushed-stone were applied as each pile material. The test results show that crushed-stone has higher bearing capacity and less settlement than those of sand under similar fore water pressure condition. Therefore, crushed-stone is determined to be appropriate as the substitute for sand.

  • Although the discharge capacity of the natural fiber drains are very low compared to that of plastic drain board (PDB), it is found that the conventional fiber drains and the new developed straw drain boards have great potential for use as a substitute for conventional plastic drain boards through several model tests. To verify their field application, a pilot test using environmentally friendly drains is also being carried out to prove their effective discharge capacity in the field. The pilot test site was divided into 5 different areas, with various combinations of vertical and horizontal drains installed for evaluation. Definite characteristics of various drains are still to be found due to the delay in construction of embankment. Consolidation behavior of three types of vertical drains and two types of horizontal drains will be analyzed after the completion of the embankment in the near future.

  • In order to improve dredged area, long time and high cost is needed because of bad engineering and physical conditions. And there is no suitable example of pipe mixing method at domestic site. Moreover, applicability and effectiveness of this method is uncertain and shows different results between site and laboratory test. In order to solve these problems, we determined proper grain size distribution and water content range using dredged soil and reformed material (standard sand & material controlling grain size distribution) in the laboratory test. As a result, we confirmed that coefficient of sediment consolidation is increased and there is an improvement about separation sedimentation. Undrained shear strength was derived by water content of reformed dredging soil through regression analysis of test results. We suggest the correlation equation for determining mixing ratio.
