  • In this study, the combustion experiment of hydrocarbon-kerosene fueled dual mode ramjet combustor was performed at mach number 3.5~6.0 conditions. Through the experiment, the temperature and the pressure distribution inside the combustion chamber were measured and the combustion characteristics inside the combustion chamber were investigated. In the mach number 3.5~5.0 range, it was able to identify subsonic combustion in the downstream combustion chamber. In the mach number 6.0 condition, the injected fuel from the injectors was naturally fired, and it was possible to confirm that supersonic combustion was successful in the upper chamber.

  • Generation of pure and controllable excitation waves to excite the natural fast-growing instability waves has always been a difficult task. For this purpose, a device that is capable of supplying co- and counter-swirl was designed, fabricated, and applied. To incorporate a novel, robust mechanical excitation device that is capable of producing disturbances, mechanically and passively, a novel device was designed and built.

  • A turbulent wake generated by a cylinder in nozzle contraction affects to the jet flow characteristics. In this study, a computational work to investigate the effect of the turbulent wake on two-dimensional subsonic jet was carried out with three different kinds of nozzle. Computations are applied to the two-dimensional unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations. Several kinds of turbulent models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. It was known that the wake flow enhanced the spread of the jet flow, compared with no wake flow condition. It was also found that the jet core is shortened by the wake flow developed from a control cylinder.

  • This paper investigates the off-design performance of methane-fueled air turbo ramjet(ATR) engine in subsonic flight speed range. The ATR engine was modeled and simulated numerically. Each component was modeled to enable their off-design calculation. Compressor operating point was determined by flow matching with nozzle, and turbine by work matching. The ATR engine exhibited quite different off-design behavior compared to the conventional gas turbine engine.

  • Development and validation of performance analysis model for dual combustion ramjet engines has been performed. A typical performance model for hypersonic intake flow and supersonic mixing and combustion was demonstrated; Taylor-Maccoll equation for coaxial intakes and a quasi-one dimensional reacting flow analysis with CEA chemical equilibrium for supersonic combustion. The results, thermodynamic data of intake and supersonic combustor were validated with CFD numerical results.

  • this paper the acoustic signature from a supersonic nozzle is measured and compared to the result of a program developed for a gas turbine noise prediction. In order to measure the jet Mach Number, the pressure and temperature at the settling chamber was measured along with pressures from a pitot-tube placed near the exit. The results are also compared to the ones obtained with a shadow graph technique. Jet noise produced by an imperfectly expanded jet contains shock associated noise, which consist of broadband noise and screech tone noise. For subsonic condition, the directivity is dominant to the downstream direction due to turbulence mixing noise. For supersonic conditions, however, the directivity is dominant toward upstream direction due to shock associated noise. The comparison with a jet exhaust noise prediction code shows good agreement at supersonic conditions but needs to be improved at subsonic speeds.

  • To investigate the possibility of using artificial means for the control of shear layers in swirl jets, a shear excitation device is introduced. The device consists of co-centric dual nozzles with internal lobes (i.e., convex surfaces) of small height to induce disturbance. The number of convexities can be varied to produce the various modes in azimuthal direction. The acquired velocity data of the swirling jets, with and without the lobes, are numerically simulated in 2-D contour plots and 3-D particle trace plots. The results are compared with the baseline (i.e., no excitation case) at various excitation modes. Conclusively it is observed that the artificial excitation method is effective in the control of the vortical structure in swirling jets.

  • For the purpose of a cost effective design of practical subsoni $c^ersonic ejector systems, an experiment was carried out using a superheated steam as a primary driving flow. The superheated steam jet was produced by several different kinds of subsonic and supersonic nozzles. The secondary flow of atmospheric air inside a plenum chamber was drawn into the primary steam jet. The vacuum performance of the plenum chamber was investigated for a wide range of the ejector operation pressure ratio. The result showed that the static pressure of the mixed flow at the ejector throat is only a function of the ejector operation pressure ratio, regardless of the primary nozzle type employed.ed.
