  • The aim of this study is to develop future climate scenario by downscaling the regional climate model (RCM) from global climate model (GCM) based on IPCC A1B scenario. To this end, the study first resampled the KMA-RCM(Korea meteorological administration-regional climate model) from spatial resolution of 27km to 1km. Second, observed climatic data of temperature and rainfall through 1971-2000 were processed to reflect the temperature lapse rate with respect to the altitude of each meteorological observation station. To optimize the downscaled results, Co-kriging was used to calculate temperature lapse-rate; and IDW was used to calculate rainfall lapse rate. Fourth, to verify results of the study we performed correlation analysis between future climate change projection data and observation data through the years 2001-2010. In this study the past climate data (1971-2000), future climate change scenarios(A1B), KMA-RCM(Korea meteorological administration-regional climate model) results and the 1km DEM were used. The research area is entire South Korea and the study period is from 1971 to 2100. Monthly mean temperatures and rainfall with spatial resolution of 1km * 1km were produced as a result of research. Annual average temperature and precipitation had increased by $1.39^{\circ}C$ and 271.23mm during 1971 to 2100. The development of downscaling method using GIS and verification with observed data could reduce the uncertainty of future climate change projection.

  • This study was performed in Bo-Eun Gun, Chung-Cheong Buk Do. The forest types having been classified, the each area was measured by dot-grid method. The 820 sample points having been obtained by systematic sampling method, the tree heights, crown densities, crown diameters in the points were measured on the aerial photography, and the volumes per hectare were estimated by the comparison with stereogram. Thirty eight plots, which amounted to about 4.5% of all the sample points, were sampled with double sampling method and volume were measured by the ground survey method. the results were summarized as follows; 1. There is no significant differentia between the values measure by dot-grid method and the statistical values obtained by the authority for the area. 2. There is no significant differentia between the estimated values and the measured values for the volume. And the coefficient (b) was 1.18. 3. The heights of conifer trees were easily measured more or less, but it was some difficult for the deciduous trees, because the tops of trees were not observed easily. 4. All the values had a tendencies to be overestimated in the low stocked stand and to be underestimated in the high stocked stand. 5. When the aerial volume table method by ground checking needs to be used together, the work should be performed by the experienced technician and the photgraphic volume table should be made in advanced of the work.

  • Water balance is the major factor in forest ecosystem, and is closely related to the vegetation and topographic characteristics within a watershed. The hydrologic response of a forest watershed was investigated with the hydrological model. The deterministic, lumped parameter model (BROOK90) was selected and used to evaluate the applicability of the model for simulating daily runoff on the steep, forested watershed. The model was calibrated and validated against the streamflow data measured at the Bukmoongol watershed. The deviation in runoff volume $(D_v)$ was -1.7% for the calibration period, and the $D_v$ value for the validation period was 4.6%. The correlation coefficient (r) and model efficiency (E) on monthly basis were 0.922,0.847, respectively, for the calibration period, while the r- and E-value for the validation period were 0.941, 0.871, respectively. Overall, the simulated streamflows were close to the observations with respect to total runoff volume, seasonal runoff volume, and baseflow index for the simulation period. BROOK90 model was able to reproduce the trend of runoff with higher correlation during the simulation period.

  • Ocean Color products have been used to understand marine ecosystem. In high latitude region, ice melting optically influences the ocean color products. In this study, we assessed optical properties in fjord around Svalbard Arctic sea, and estimated distribution of chlorophyll-a and suspended sediment by using high resolution satellite data, Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). To estimate chlorophyll-a and suspended sediment concentrations, various regression models were tested with different band ratio. The regression models were not shown high correlation because of temporal difference between satellite data and in-situ data. However, model-derived distribution of ocean color products from OLI showed a possibility that fjord and coastal areas around Arctic Sea can be monitored with high resolution satellite data. To understand climate change pattern around Arctic Sea, we need to understand ice meting influences on marine ecosystem change. Results of this study will be used to high resolution monitoring of ice melting and its influences on the marine ecosystem change at high latitude. KOPRI (Korea Polar Research Institute) has been operated the Dasan station on Svalbard since 2002, and study was conducted using Arctic station.

  • Three-dimensional dose calculations based on CT images are fundamental to stereotactic radiosurgery for small intracranial tumor. In our stereotactic radiosurgery program, irradiations have been performed using the 6 MV photon beam of linear accelerator after stereotactic CT investigations of the target center through the beam's-eye view and the coordinates of BRW frame converted to that of radiosurgery. Also we can describe the tumor diameter and the shape in three dimensional configuration. Non-coplanar irradiation technique was developed that it consists of a combination of a moving field with a gantry angle of $140^{\circ}$, and a horizontal couch angle of $200^{\circ}C$ around the isocenter. In this radiosurgery technique, we provide the patient head setup in the base-ring holder and rotate around body axis. The total gantry moving range shows angle of 2520 degrees via two different types of gantry movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of patient. The 3-D isodose curves overlapped to the tumor contours in screen and analytic dose profiles in calculation area were provided to calculate the thickness of $80\%$ of tumor center dose to $20\%$ of that. Furtheremore we provided the 3-D dose profiles in entire calculation plane. In this experiments, measured isodose curves in phantom irradiation have shown very similiar to that of computer generations.

  • Purpose : To evaluate MR image qualities we developed a new MRI phantom with the fixation structures necessary to position it into coil firmly. Materials and methods : We designed MRI phantom for eight evaluation items such as slice thickness accuracy, high contrast spatial resolution, low contrast object detectability, geometry accuracy, slice position accuracy, image intensity uniformity, percent signal ghosting and signal to noise ratio. For the positioning of phantom at coils, the fixation structures were set up on the surface of phantom. Six different MRI units were used for test the possibility for the clinical application and their image qualities were evaluated. Results : We acquired appropriate MR image qualities enough for the evaluation on all used MR units and confirmed that their evaluations were within reliable values compared to real ones for some items. The positioning of our phantom into head coils with fixation structures worked well for proper imaging. Conclusion : We found that our prototype of MRI phantom had the possibility of clinical application for MR image quality assessment.

  • To improve the accuracy of frost warning system for pear orchard in a complex terrain in Naju area, the daily minimum temperature forecasted by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) was interpolated using a regional climate model based on topoclimatic estimation and optimum scale interpolation from 2004 to 2005. Based on the validation experiments done for three pear orchards in the spring of 2004, the results showed a good agreement between the observed and predicted values, resulting in improved predictability compared to the forecast from Korea Meteorological Administration. The differences between the observed and the predicted temperatures were $-2.1{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the valley, $-1.6{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the riverside and $-1.1{\sim}3.5^{\circ}C$ (on average $0.6^{\circ}C$) in the hills. Notably, the errors have been reduced significantly for the valley and riverside areas that are more affected by the cold air drainage and more susceptible to frost damage than hills.

  • Solar radiation under a clear sky is a important factor in the process by which meteorological satellite images are converted into solar radiation maps, and the quality of estimations depends on the accuracy of clear sky models. Therefore, it is important to select models appropriate to the purpose of the study and the study area. In this instance, complex models were applied using Linke turbidity, including ESRA, Dumortier, and MODTRAN, in addition to simple models such as Bourges and PdBV, which consider only the solar elevation angles. The presence of cloud was identified using the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite and the Meteorological imager (COMS MI), and reference data were then selected. In order to calculate the accuracy of the clear sky models, the concepts of RMSE and MBE were applied. The results show that Bourges and PdBV produced low RMSE values, while PdBV had relatively steady RMSE values. Also, simple models tend to underestimate global solar irradiation during spring and early summer. Conversely, in the winter season, complex methods often overestimate irradiation. In future work, the cause of overestimation and other factors will be analyzed and the clear sky models will be adjusted in order to make them suitable for the Korean Peninsula.

  • For domestic application of the temperature gradient model proposed by foreign design standards, a specimen of steel box girder bridge was fabricated with the following dimensions: 2.0 m width, 2.0 m height and 3.0 m length. Temperature was measured using 24 temperature gauges during the summer of 2016. The reliability of the measured data was verified by comparing the measured air temperature with the ambient air temperature of the Korea Meteorological Administration. Of the measured gauges, four temperature gauges that can be compared with the temperature difference of the Euro code were selected and used to analyze the distribution of the measured temperatures at each point. The reference atmospheric temperature for the selection of the maximum temperature difference was determined by considering the standard error. Maximum and minimum temperatures were calculated from the four selected points and the resulting temperature difference was calculated. The model for the temperature difference in the steel box girder bridge was shown by graphing the temperature difference. Compared to the temperature distribution of the Euro code, the presented temperature difference model showed a temperature difference of $0.9^{\circ}C$ at the top and of $0.3^{\circ}$ to $0.4^{\circ}C$ at the intermediate part. These results suggested that the presented model could be considered relatively similar to the Euro code The calculated standard error coefficient was 2.71 to 2.84 times the standard error and represents a range of values. The proposed temperature difference model may be used to generate basic data for calculating the temperature difference in temperature load design.
