  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of new graduate nurses' empathy and their perceived preceptors' empathy on job satisfaction, job stress and turnover intention. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on new graduate nurses who were under 12 months old while working at three medical institutions that operated the preceptorship. In the preceptorship according to adult learning theory, the preceptors need to create a psychological environment for the new graduate nurses, and their empathy should be perceived by new graduate nurses. The study revealed that the new graduate nurses group with high level of empathy had high levels of job satisfaction, low job stress, and low degree of turnover intention, and the level of empathy affects job satisfaction of new graduate nurses. The new graduate nurses group with low level of perceived preceptor's empathy had low job satisfaction, high job stress, and high degree of turnover intention, and their perceived preceptor's empathy affected job stress and turnover intention. Based on these results, we suggest the introduction of a program to enhance empathy for new graduate nurses and preceptors.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop case-based self-learning multimedia contents for preventing malpractice that frequently occurred among nurses working in the operating room. Methods: Based on the learning needs of operating room nurses, real case reports, and literature reviews, the case-based multimedia learning contents were developed according to the instructional design procedure. The assessment of learning needs was performed by the combination of surveys using structured questionnaire and of interviews for 40 operating room nurses. Results: The learning contents included four learning modules with real malpractice cases from the areas of operating preparation, nursing skills during operation, environmental management of operating room, and patient safety and observation-related. The 80 minute long case-based multimedia learning contents were finally developed after content validity tests from clinical experts. Each module contained photos, sounds and flash animation with voice recording on the contents of nursing error cases and standardized protocols. Conclusion: The developed multimedia learning contents based on real error cases in this study can be utilized as an educational hands-on training materials for nurses to prevent malpractice in the operating room.

  • Purpose : This study sought to investigate novice nurses' communication education needs in the intensive care unit (ICU) using Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) and Borich's need assessment model. This study identified communication challenges in clinical settings to develop a simulation program that enhances communication competencies based on educational requirements. Methods : A descriptive research design and a self-report questionnaire were used. The latter was developed and administered to 121 novice nurses with less than one year of experience in the ICU at various university hospitals in Korea. Data were collected via the online open chatroom from June 24th to July 28th, 2023. The communication education needs were identified using descriptive statistics, t-tests, IPA, and Borich's needs assessment model. Text analysis was used to categorize the participants' communication experience. Results : The results revealed that "communication with physicians," "communication with patients," and "communication with nurse on another shift" domains contained the most substantial educational needs for novice nurses working in the intensive care units. Conclusion : The results provide fundamental data for developing and enhancing customized communication education programs for novice ICU nurses. This valuable information could help ICU nurses and educators improve new nurses' communication skills, which would ultimately contribute to the advancement of nursing education and clinical practice.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing intention to stay among new graduate nurses. The participants were 127 new graduate nurses working at A University hospital in Gyeonggi Province. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. The results showed that job satisfaction, reality shock, working period, and resilience were significant predictors of intention to stay and explained for 44.2% of the variance in intention to stay. The findings of this study suggest that interventions focusing on reducing the reality shock through pre-experiences or trainings in clinical situations and enhancing the resilience are needed to improve intention to stay for the new graduate nurses. Also it is necessary to establish a support system and work environment to improve nursing job satisfaction, and a long-term education program of more than 6 months is needed to help new nurses adapt to work.
