Effects of Renal Denervation and Cromakalim on Central Diuretic Action of Glibenclamide, an ATP-dependent $K^+$ Channel Blocker, in Dogs (ATP-의존성 $K^+$ Channel 차단제인 Glibenclamide의 중추적 이뇨작용에 대한 신장 신경제와의 Cromakalim의 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of renal denervation and cromakalim, a K+ Channel opener, on central diuretic action of glibenclamide, an ATP-dependent K+ Channel blocker, in dog. Diuretic action of glibenclamide administered into the vein was weakened markedly by renal denervation and pretreatment of of cromakalim. Above results suggest that central diuretic action of glibenclamide is mediated by renal nerves and K+ Channel localized in kidney.

  • 본 논문에서는 코로나19 사태에 대비하여 실시간으로 마스크를 제대로 쓴 사람과 제대로 쓰지 않은 사람을 구분하는 시스템을 제안한다. 이 시스템을 사용하기 위하여 모델 학습 시에 합성곱 신경망(CNN : Convolutional Neural Networks)를 사용한다. 학습된 모델을 토대로 영상에 적용 시 하르 특징 분류기(Haar Cascade Classifier)로 얼굴을 탐지하여 마스크 여부를 판단한다.

Screening of Potential Compounds Promoting BDNF Production in Noradrenergic Locus Coeruleus Neurons (노르아드레날린성 신경세포에서의 BDNF 생산 증진 물질 탐색)

  • The locus coeruleus (LC) contains about half of the total number of noradrenergic neurons in the brain and those noradrenergic neurons from the LC innervate entire brain regions. The LC is a major common target region in several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Pakinson's and Huntington's diseases. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) regulate neuronal cell survival and differentiation of central nervous system neurons, including LC noradrenergic neurons. In this study, various small molecules and growth factors were tested as candidates to promote the production of BDNF in LC noradrenergic neuronal cells. The molecules tested include neuropeptides, cytokines, growth factors, neurotransmitters, and intracellular signaling agents. Four small molecules or growth factors, FGF8b, BMP-4, forskolin, and dibutyryl cGMP, were found to increase the release of BDNF in LC noradrenergic neurons. Especially, BMP-4 significantly enhanced BDNF production over 2.5-fold in LC noradrenergic neurons.

Clinical Results According to the Level and Extent of Sympathicotomy in Essential Hyperhidrosis (본태성다한증에서 흥부교감신경의 차단 범위와 부위에 따른 임상결과)

  • Video-assisted thoracic sympathicotomy is a safe and effective therapy for the treatment of essential hyperhidrosis with immediate symptomatic improvement. However, this is offset by the occurrence of a high rate of side effects, such as embarrassing compensatory hyperhidrosis. Therefore, by comparing and assessing the degree of symptomatic improvement or compensatory sweating following sympathicotomy at various levels and the extent of block, we are to determine the optimal level of sympathicotomy and which method will result in minimal side effects and maximal benefits. Material and Method: From January 1998 to June 2001, the thoracoscopic sympathicotomy was performed in 150 patients suffering from essential hyperhidrosis in the Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Wonkwang University Hospital. The patients were divided into three groups. GroupI(n=50): patients having undergone 72,3,4 sympathicotomy, GroupII (n=50): patients having undergone 72 sympathicotomy which consist of blocking the interganglionic neural fiber on the second rib, and group 111(n=50): patients having undergone 73 sympathicotomy which consist of blocking the interganglionic neural fiber on the third rib. The parameters were composed of the satisfaction rate of treatment, the degree of compensatory sweating, postoperative complications, and changes of plantar sweating. Results: There was no difference in age and sex among the groups. All of the treated patients obtained satisfactory alleviation of essential hyperhidrosis in immediate postoperative period. However the rate of long-term satisfaction were 80%, 92%, and 96% in groupsI,II, and III respectively(p<0.05). More than embarrassing compensatory hyperhidrosis was present in 50%, 28%, and 18% in groups I,II ,and III respectively(p<0.05). Slight but comfortable amounts of palmar humidness was expressed in decreasing order, group III(34%), groupII(6%), and group I(4%) respectively(p<0.05). In regard to plantar sweating, decrease in sweating was expressed in each of the three groups, but was not significant between the groups.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of neural-network based autopilot control system. The back-propagation neural network introduced in the previous paper by authors is applied to the autopilot control system. As a result, two neural-network controllers are developed, which are the model reference adaptive neural controller and the instantaneous optimal neural controller. The model reference adaptive neural controller is the control technique that the heading angle and angular velocity are controlled by the rudder angle to follow the output of the reference model. The instantaneous optimal neural controller optimizes the transition from one state to the next state. These control techniques are applied to a simple ship maneuvering model and their effectiveness is proved by numerical examples.

Inhibition of Proliferation and Neurogenesis of Mouse Subventricular Zone Neural Stem Cells by a Mitochondrial Inhibitor Rotenone (미토콘드리아 억제제 rotenone에 의한 쥐의 뇌실 하 영역 신경 줄기 세포의 증식과 신경 세포로의 분화 억제)

  • Mitochondria have multiple functions in cells: providing chemical energy, storing cellular $Ca^{2+}$, generating reactive oxygen species, and regulating apoptosis. Through these functions, mitochondria are also involved in the maintenance, proliferation, and differentiation of stem/progenitor cells. In the brain, the subventricular zone (SVZ) is one of the neurogenic regions that contains neural stem cells (NSCs) throughout a lifetime. However, reports on the role of mitochondria in SVZ NSCs are scarce. Here, we show that rotenone, a complex I inhibitor of mitochondria, inhibits the proliferation and differentiation of SVZ NSCs in different ways. In proliferating NSCs, rotenone decreases mitosis as measured through phosphorylated histone H3 detection; moreover, apoptosis is not induced by rotenone at 50 nM. In differentiating NSCs, rotenone blocks neurogenesis and oligodendrogenesis while glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive astrocytes are not affected. Interestingly, in this study there were more cells in the differentiating NSCs treated with rotenone for 4-6 days than in the vehicle control group which was a different effect from the reduced number of cells in the proliferating NSCs. We examined both apoptosis and mitosis and found that rotenone decreased apoptosis as detected by staining cleaved caspase-3 but did not affect mitosis. Our results suggest that functional mitochondria are necessary in both the proliferation and differentiation of SVZ NSCs. Furthermore, mitochondria might be involved in the mitosis and apoptosis that occur during those processes.

The Clinicopathologic Characteristics of Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Stomach (위에 발생한 신경내분비 종양의 임상병리학적 고찰)

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the stomach. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 13 patients who were diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor from January 1999 to August 2007 at Kosin Medical Center; 4,159 gastric cancer patients were treated surgically during the same time. The average follow up period was 14.3 months. Results: The majority of 13 patients were men (male-female ratio: 11:2) and the average age of patients with NET was 59.4 years (range: 42~72 years). The presenting symptoms were mostly epigastric pain and soreness. The tumor was limited to the mucosa or submucosa in two cases, and the tumor extended beyond the muscle layer in 11 cases. The mean size of the tumor was 7.0 cm, ranging from 0.7 cm to 15 cm. The type of the NEC (according to the WHO classification) was type 3 for eight patients, type 4 for four patients and type 1 for one patient. Regional lymph node metastasis was noted in 11 patients. Four cases showed recurrence of disease and the site of recurrence included liver in two patients, multiple organs (including the peritoneum and lung) in one patient and multiple organs (including liver, pancreas and duodenum) in one patient. The recurrent cases were type 3 and type 4 and the average survival period of the recurrent patients was 12.8 months. Conclusion: The majority of neuroendocrine tumors of the stomach were at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. These tumors frequently recurred in the liver and they have a poor prognosis.
