  • Permeability and its change due to a fluid injection in jointed rock mass is an important factor to be well identified for a safe and successful implementation of Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) projects which may accompany injection-induced hydromechanical deformation of the rock mass. In this technical report, we first reviewed important issues in evaluating initial permeability using borehole hydraulic tests and numierical approaches for understanding coupled hydromechanical properties of rock mass. Recent SIMFIP testing device to measure these hydromechanical properties directly through in-situ borehole experiments was also reviewed. The technical significance and usefulness of the device for further applications was discussed as well.

  • The liquefaction is a phenomenon that the effective stress becomes zero due to the rapidly accumulated excess pore water pressure when a strong load acts on the ground for a short period of time, such as an earthquake or pile driving, resulting in the loss of the shear strength of the ground. Since the Geongju and Pohang earthquake, liquefaction brought increasing domestic attention. This liquefaction can be assessed mainly through the semi-empirical procedures proposed by Seed and Idriss (1982) and the liquefaction risk based on the penetration resistance obtained from borehole DB and SPT. However, the geotechnical information data obtained by the in-situ tests or boring information fundamentally have an issue of the representative of the target area. Therefore, this study sought to construct a ground information database by classifying and reviewing the ground information required for liquefaction assessment, and tried to solve the representative problem of the soil layer that is subject to liquefaction evaluation by performing spatial interpolation using GIS.

  • In South Korea, following the 2016 Gyeongju and 2017 Pohang earthquakes, the need for earthquake disaster prevention has been increasing. Reliable techniques for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and ground motion models are required for quantifying earthquake damage. Recently, there has been growing demand for deep underground facilities, necessitating accurate quantification techniques for earthquake damage in deep underground. In this study, ground motion models within rock were proposed using ground motion data measured at borehole seismic stations. A regression analysis, a type of empirical technique, was applied to 17 periods selected in a range from 0.01 to 10 s of spectral accelerations to develop the ground motion models. Residual analysis was performed to evaluate and improve the prediction performance of the ground motion model, with correction factors added to the model equation. When applying the proposed model, the group means of residuals approached zero, and the standard deviation of total residuals, similar to existing models proposed in other countries, confirmed the reliability of the proposed model.

  • Resistivity logging instruments were designed to measure electrical resistivity of formation, which can be directly interpreted to provide water-saturation profile. Short and long normal logging measurements are made under groundwater level. In some investigation sites, groundwater level reaches to a depth of a few meters. It has come to attention that the proximity of groundwater level might distort short and long normal logging readings, when the measurements are made near groundwater level, owing to the proximity of an insulating air. This study investigates the effects of the proximity of groundwater level (and also the proximity of earth surface) on the normal by simulating normal logging measurements near groundwater level. In the simulation, we consider all the details of real logging situation, i.e., the presence of wellbore, the tool mandrel with current and potential electrodes, and currentreturn and reference-potential electrodes. We also model the air to include the earth’'s surface in the simulation rather than the customary choice of imposing a boundary condition. To obtain apparent resistivity, we compute the voltage, i.e., potential difference between monitoring and reference electrodes. For the simulation, we use a twodimensional, goal-oriented and high-order self-adaptive hp finite element refinement strategy (h denotes the element size and p the polynomial order of approximation within each element) to obtain accurate simulation results. Numerical results indicate that distortion on the normal logging is greater when the reference potential electrode is closer to the borehole and distortions on long normal logging are larger than those on short normal logging.

  • Recently, the liquefaction phenomenon was first discovered in Korea due to a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred in Pohang, Gyeonsangbuk-do. When liquefaction occurs, some of the water and sand are ejected to the ground, producing a space, which leads to various dangerous situations, such as ground subsidence, building collapse, and sinkhole generation. Recently, the necessity of producing a liquefaction risk map in Korea has increased to grasp potential liquefaction areas in advance. Therefore, this study examined the drilling information from the national geotechnical information DB center at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport to produce a liquefaction risk map, and developed a module to implement functions for basic data modeling and 3D analysis based on drilling information database extraction and information. Through this study, effective interlocking technology of the integrated database of national land information was obtained, and three-dimensional information was generated for each stage of liquefaction risk analysis, such as soil resistance value and a liquefaction risk map. In the future, the technology developed in this study can be used as a comprehensive decision support technology for establishing a foundation for building 3D liquefaction information and for establishing a response system of liquefaction.

  • For the scientific and systematic study of sediment deposits along Yeongsan river, total 13 core samples were taken from Yeongsan river. The thickness of sediment deposits is 22.0m at YS 1, 20.0m YS 2, 18.5m YS 3, 12.0m YS 4, 3.0m YS 5, 5.5m YS 7, 3.0m YS 8, 5.9m YS 9, 5.0m YS 10 on main stream of Yeongsan river. The thickness of deposit is increasing from upstream to downstream. The composition of sediments dominates sandy gravel on the upstream and the lower part on the downstream, and mud deposits of $11m{\sim}16m$ thick on the upper part of on the downstream(YS 1, YS 2, and YS 3). Contents of organic carbon and calcium carbonates occur being contrary to each other toward upstream. The content of organic carbon increases upstream, that of calcium carbonates decreases. According to size analysis of sediment, the content of gravel increases and mud decreases from downstream to upstream. Sediment deposits can be divided into two types whether gravel is or not. But this boundary is clear in the downstream(YS 1$\sim$YS 4) but is vague in the upstream. The result of this study could be provided engineering, environment, and architecture with geological background as the essential basis.

  • Resistivity tomography has become an important tool to image underground resistivity distribution. This method has been widely applied to site investigation for engineering and environmental purpose. In resistivity tomography, various electrode arrays can be used and each array has both merits and demerits. For example, the pole-pole array has high signal to noise ratio (S/N ratio), but its resolution is too low. The dipole-dipole array has low S/N ratio, but its resolution is very high. The Pole-dipole may has intermediate Snf ratio and resolution. The modified Pole-dipole array, recently proposed, shows reasonable S/N ratio and resolution, which are comparable to the pole-dipole array. These electrode arrays except the pole-pole array, however, have the problem that the apparent resistivity can diverge at some special electrode Positions. Also, the Pole-Pole array may not reflect the doe resistivity of an anomalous body. In this study, we propose a new electrode array, mixed array, where pole-dipole and modified pole-dipole ways are selectively used with the relative positions of current and potential electrodes. The mixed array has the same level of S/N ratio and resolution as the pole-dipole array and the apparent resistivity does not diverge in the receiver hole. Furthermore, the apparent resistivity using the array can reflect the true resistivity of the anomalous body.
