  • The purpose of the present research was to examine whether the visual system importantly use binocular disparity information in color-motion binding. Wu, Kanai and Shimojo (2004) reported an illusory color-motion binding which was observed in the peripheral visual area when observers fixated on the central area of visual stimulus. We have found that illusory rotor-motion binding was not observed at the situation where binocular disparity was available but was where it was not available. These results imply that the visual system uses binocular disparity information when it binds rotor and motion and that the binding process occurs after binocular disparity information is processed.

  • Purpose: To investigate a correlation between vertical fixation disparity and stereopsis by analyzing distribution of types of vertical fixation disparity. Methods: In this study, RANDOT(R) stereotest partly using random dot was used in stereopsis tests. The vertical fixation disparity in close proximity categorized fixation disparity slope into six types on the basis of the result of measurement in when two thin lines, one for one eye looks, become overlapped as a line by adding into prism with Wesson fixation disparity card while maintaining a distance of 25 cm from patients. Results: In the types of near vertical fixation disparity curve, targeting 43 people, the first type 55.82% was the most distributed, the second type is the least 23.25%, the third type of 4.65%, the fourth type of 4.65%, the fifth type of 6.98%, the sixths types of 4.65% were distributed. The result of a correlation analysis, which shows the degree of linear correlation between two variables, represented that stereopsis is not correlated with Y-intercept (r = -0.07) which show vertical fixation disparity, associated phoria (r = -0.03) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.00), but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = 0.36) was shown to have a positive correlation with stereopsis. It has a low positive correlation and a meaningful statistics (p<0.05). The Y-intercept which indicates vertical fixation disparity was also not associated with stereopsis (r = -0.07) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.03), and this was not statistically significant (p>0.05), while it had a high correlation as well as a statistically significant with associated phoria (r = 0.89). There was a negative correlation between Y-intercept and fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = -0.33). It showed a low relationship but statistically valuable (p>0.05). As a result of regression analysis, the stereopsis was changed as 7.631" if vertical fixation disparity changes 1' and the vertical fixation disparity changed as 0.017' if stereopsis changes 1', and the change was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: The study shows that there is a low correlation between stereopsis and vertical fixation disparity, and it is difficult to determine stereopsis only using vertical fixation disparity. Therefore, it suggests other factors above vertical fixation disparity have greater influence on stereopsis.

  • When two bands have different look angle in a space-borne camera system, the registration between two bands is required. The registration cannot be modeled with constant parameters because of dynamic of platform and parallax effect. The parallax effect is caused by terrain relief, hence it causes local distortion between two bands. Therefore, the terrain relief correction in order to reduce the parallax effect is required for better registration result, especially for high resolution image data. Such terrain relief correction also can be applied to image data acquired from multiple detectors with different look angle within a band, which is a one of commonly used configuration for a wider swath in space-borne camera system, in order to reduce the distortion between detectors. The RFM is a popular abstract model in remote sensing field, which gives us the relationship between the image plane and geodetic coordinate system. Therefore, we propose a terrain relief correction method based on the RFM. The experiment showed very promising result.

  • We propose a novel plane detection in disparity space and evaluate its performance. Our method simplifies and makes scenes in disparity space easily dealt with by approximating various surfaces as planes. Moreover, the approximated planes can be represented in the same size as in the real world, and can be employed for obstacle detection and camera pose estimation. Using a stereo matching technique, our method first creates a disparity image which consists of binocular disparity values at xy-coordinates in the image. Slants of disparity values are estimated by exploiting a line simplification algorithm which allows our method to reflect global changes against x or y axis. According to pairs of x and y slants, we label the disparity image. 4-connected disparities with the same label are grouped, on which least squared model estimates plane parameters. N plane models with the largest group of disparity values which satisfy their plane parameters are chosen. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate our plane detection. The result shows 97.9%와 86.6% of quality in our experiment respectively on cones and cylinders. Proposed method excellently extracts planes from Middlebury and KITTI dataset which are typically used for evaluation of stereo matching algorithms.

  • This research presents the correction method to correct the location error of cloud caused by parallax error, and how the method can reduce the position error. The procedure has two steps: first step is to retrieve the corrected satellite zenith angle from the original satellite zenith angle. Second step is to adjust the location of the cloud with azimuth angle and the corrected satellite zenith angle retrieved from the first step. The position error due to parallax error can be as large as 60km in case of 70 degree of satellite zenith angle and 15 km of cloud height. The validation results by MODIS(Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) show that the correction method in this study properly adjusts the original cloud position error and can increase the utilization of geostationary satellite data.

  • This paper presents a new estimation and representation of a disparity map for stereo-based video communication systems. Several pixel-based and block-based algorithms have been proposed to estimate the disparity map. While the pixel-based algorithms can achieve high accuracy in computing the disparity map, they require a lost of bits to represent the disparity information. The bit rate can be reduced by the block-based algorithm, sacrificing the representation accuracy. In this paper, the block enclosing a distinct edge is divided into two regions and the disparity of each region is set to that of a neighboring block. The proposed algorithm employs accumulated histograms and a neural network to classify a type of a block. In this paper, we proved that the proposed algorithm is more effective than the conventional algorithms in estimating and representing disparity maps through several experiments.

  • This study aims to empirically estimate distributed lag effects of expenditure by type of R&D on scientific publication in the national R&D program. To analyze the lag structure between them, we used a dataset comprised of panel data from 104 technologies categorized by 6T (IT, BT, NT, ST, ET, CT) from 2007 to 2014, and employed multiple regression analysis based on the polynomial distributed lag model. This is because it is highly likely to emerge multicollinearity, if a distributed lag model without special restrictions is applied to multiple regression analysis. The main results are as follows. In the case of basic research, its lag effects are relatively evenly distributed during four years. On the other hand, the applied research and experimental development have distributed lag effects for three years and two years respectively. Therefore, when it comes to analyzing performance of scientific publication, it is necessary to be performed with characteristics of the time lag by type of R&D.

  • In this paper, we propose a super-resolution reconstruction algorithm for plenoptic images based on the reliability of disparity. The subperture image generated by the Flanoptic camera image is used for disparity estimation and reconstruction of super-resolution image based on TV_L1 algorithm. In particular, the proposed image reconstruction method is effective in the boundary region where disparity may be relatively inaccurate. The determination of reliability of disparity vector is based on the upper, lower, left and right positional relationship of the sub-aperture image. In our method, the unreliable vectors are excluded in reconstruction. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by comparing to a bicubic interpolation method, a conventional disparity based method and dictionary based method. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides the best performance in terms of PSNR(Peak Signal to noise ratio), SSIM(Structural Similarity).

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for synthesizing intermediate view image from a stereoscopic pair of images. An image of multiview is need for people in order to easily recognize 3D image. However, if many cameras are use for that, not only does system get more complicated but also transmission rating cause a big trouble. Hence, stereo images are photograph and issue on the sending side and algorithm to generate several intermediate view image is able to be use on the receiving side. The proposed method is based on disparity space image. First of all, disparity space image that is depicted by the gap of pixel followed by disparity of stereo image is generated. Disparity map is made by utilizing disparity space image for searching for optimal disparity path then eventual intermediate view image is generated after occlusion region which does not match is processed. Experimental results illustrate the performance of the proposed technique and we obtained a high quality image of more than 30 dB PSNR.
