Advances in smart sensors, embedded systems, low-power design, ad-hoc networks and MEMS have allowed the development of low-cost small sensor nodes with computation and wireless communication capabilities that can form distributed wireless sensor networks. Time information and time synchronization are fundamental building blocks in wireless sensor networks since many sensor network applications need time information for object tracking, consistent state updates, duplicate detection and temporal order delivery. Various time synchronization protocols have been proposed for sensor networks because of the characteristics of sensor networks which have limited computing power and resources. However, none of these protocols have been designed with time representation scheme in mind. Global time format such as UTC TOD (Universal Time Coordinated, Time Of Day) is very useful in sensor network applications. In this paper we propose network time protocol extension for global time presentation in wireless sensor networks.

Sensor network applications need synchronized time extremely such as object tracking, consistent state updates, duplicate detection, and temporal order delivery. This paper describes reliable time synchronization protocol (RTSP) for wireless sensor networks. In the proposed method, synchronization error is decreased by creating hierarchical tree with lower depth and reliability is improved by maintaining and updating information of candidate parent nodes. The RTSP reduces recovery time and communication overheads comparing to TPSN when there are topology changes owing to moving of nodes, running out of energy and physical crashes. Simulation results show that RTSP has about 20% better performance than TPSN in synchronization accuracy. And the number of message in the RTSP is $20%{\sim}60%$ lower than that in the TPSN when nodes are failed in the network. In case of different transmission range of nodes, the communication overhead in the RTSP is reduced up to 40% than that in the TPSN at the maximum.

In this paper, we propose a new time synchronization algorithm using CoAP(constrained-application protocol) in sensor network environment, which handles a technique that synchronizes an explicit timestamp between sensor nodes not including an additional module for time-setting and sensor node gateway linked to internet time server. CoAP is a standard protocol for sensor data communication among sensor nodes and sensor node gateway to be built much less memory and power supply in constrained network surroundings including serious network jitter, packet losses, etc. We have supplied an exact time synchronization implementation among small and cheap IP-based sensor nodes or non-IP based sensor nodes and sensor node gateway in sensor network using CoAP message header's option extension. On behalf of conventional network time synchronization method, as our approach uses an exclusive protocol 'CoAP' in sensor network, it is not to become an additional burden for synchronization service to sensor nodes or sensor node gateway. This method has an average error about 2ms comparing to NTP service and offers a low-cost and robust network time synchronization algorithm.

The coordination of distributed entities and events requires time synchronization. Precision time synchronization enables a variety of extensions of applications and provides much accurate information. The IEEE 1588 precision time protocol (PTP) provides a standard method to synchronize devices in a network. This paper deals with the design and implementation of a PTP gateway to extend IEEE 1588 to Zigbee networks. The PTP gateway can not only extend IEEE 1588 to Zigbee networks but also share the same time reference using IEEE 1588 between two or more Zigbee networks. This paper also presents experiments and performance evaluation of time synchronization using the PTP gateway. Our result established a method for nodes in a network to maintain their clocks to within a 300 nanosecond offset from the reference clock of a master node via Ethernet.

Time synchronization of nodes in sensor network synchronizes sensor nodes to one time clock. This is very essential in sensor networks so that the information collected and reported from the sensor nodes becomes meaningful. If sensor nodes are not synchronized, disaster report with time information can be wrong analyzed and this may lead to big calamity. With the limitation of battery and computing power, time synchronization algorithm imported in sensor nodes has to be as simple as it doesn't need big complexity, nor generates many synchronization messages. To reduce the synchronization error, hop count should be kept small between reference node to initiate synchronization and sensor nodes to be synchronized. Therefore, multiple reference nodes are used instead of single reference node. The use of multiple reference nodes introduce the requirement of synchronization among reference nodes in the network. Several algorithms have been proposed till now, but the synchronization among reference nodes are not well considered. This paper proposes improved time synchronization for sensor networks by synchronizing multiple reference nodes inside the network. Through simulation, we validated the effects of new algorithm.

SpaceWire is a standard for high-speed links and networks between spacecraft components, which was invented for better, cheaper and faster on-board data handling in spacecraft. The standard defines timecode and its distribution which can be used for time synchronization among the nodes in a SpaceWire network. A timecode output from the time master which provides standard time over a SpaceWire network travels through links and routers to reach every nodes. While traveling, a timecode suffers from transmission delay and jitter which cause some difference in time synchronization among nodes. In this work, a simulator was developed using OMNeT++ to simulate the operation of a SpaceWire network and some analyses were performed on the transmission delay and jitter accompanied with a transmission of a timecode. The result will be used in the near future for the research of a precise time synchronization technique over a SpaceWire network.

Wireless sensor network is the system for data collection and data process between many nodes. For this work, Synchronization of operation execution and ordering many events are needed. Reference the external time information is the most accurate way to have same time information for all nodes but it's hard to apply these to sensor network. So there are many study of time synchronization there are many error occurred when the time synchronization is executed in the sensor network and minimizing these errors is important. In this paper, we propose how to minimize errors using several time stamp information exchanging when the network is initialized. When the big difference is occurred between receive time and send time in the node communication(cause of traffic overhead and etc), it shows big error of time correction and transfer delay time. but it's hard to detect these errors when it exchanges time stamp information just one time. so we try to reduce these errors using the median value of transfer delay and time correction value with many times of time stamp information exchange.

In this paper we analyze the main resources of error in GEO-satellite STFS(Standard Time & frequency Signal) dissemination system. For the case of small countries like Korea, we compare GEO-satellite STFS dissemination technique with the terrestrial network or with the GPS using LEO-satellites, and analyze its advantages over the forementioned systems. We also introduce the GEO-satellite STFS dissemination systems which are being developed or in service. Particularly, we put much efforts to develop the synchronization error calibration technique required to provide a highly accurate STFS service via KoreaSAT. We then propose the differential mode technique as the most effective and efficient calibration technique for mitigating errors in GEO-satellite STFS dissemination systems, and analyze its performance via computer simulation. We also analyze the relation between time accuracy and frequency accuracy. Our experimental results show that the time accuracy is better than 100 ns and the frequency accuracy is better than 10-13 over 7 days all around Korea peninsula. Finally, we propose methods to improve the performance of STFS dissemination system, and demonstrate that the proposed methods result in more accurate synchronization of GEO-satellite STFS.
