  • In this paper, the spin-up from rest to a state of solid-body rotation in a circular container with a slender rectangular obstacle on the bottom wall is analysed experimentally. We use a PIV method for the evolution of the free-surface flow. Laboratory experiments have been carried out for a variety of the obstacle height h(0, 5, 10 [mm]) and the liquid depth H(25, 50, 75, 100 [mm]). It was found that the spin-up time is crucially dependent on the obstacle height T. In the case of T=10[mm] the spin-up time is considerably shorter then the other cases.

  • This study empirically analyzes how factors inside university influence the creation of technology-based spin-offs, employing unique data sets. We posit a two-year time lag between the explanatory variables and the dependent one using total 270 university data sets for 5 years in Korea. The results show that universities with experienced technology licensing offices (TLO), those with R&D personnel size, those in possession of incubation policies or business incubators have an edge in creating technology-based spin-offs. The findings provide policy implications. By making more informed decisions on fostering technology-based spin-offs at universities, policymakers can promote the creation of new industries and lead them to create jobs in line with the national economic growth policy.

  • In this study, spin-up flows in a shallow rectangular container are analysed by using three-dimensional computation. We compared our results with those obtained by quasi three-dimensional computation. Our results show that quasi S-D solustion is not accurate enough and it provides far less damped solution.

  • In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental results in a half-cylinder. In the numerical computation, we used the zonal embedded grid system. Flow visualization for the spin-up flows was used by PIV. The results show that at left hand side an cyclonic cell moves along a wall and separates into both cells at right hand side.

  • Two-dimensional spin-up in a rectangular domain is analysed by the numerical computation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The cells are in most cases generated by the vorticity developed near the uper and lower surfaces. Moreover, the movement and interaction of those vortices play a key role in establishing the quasi-steady state. The critical phenomena observed in the previous experiment turns out to be caused by the critical movement of the vortices.

  • In this study, the oceanic responses to given atmospheric boundary conditions are investigated using a mesoscale ocean circulation model. The numerical experiments are divided into two parts: One is, so called, spin-up experiment and the other is reproduction experiment. The spin-up experiment simulates climatic state of ocean by integrating the ocean model with upper boundary conditions of the monthly mean atmospheric climate data. In the reproduction experiment, for the reproduction of major oceanic changes around Korean Peninsula during the period of 1980-1998 (19 years), the model has been integrated under the boundary condition of the 19year monthly mean atmosphere data. The spined-up state of ocean generated from the spin-up experiment is assigned to the initial boundary condition of the reproduction experiment. In the spin-up experiment, the model properly simulates the major features of circulation structure around Korean Peninsula; such as separation of East Korean Warm Current (EKWC), formation of the polar front, cold water band associated with the small scale eddies in the East Sea, the formation of front along west coast, and the seasonal variation of circulation pattern caused by changing upwind current in the West Sea. In the reproduction experiment, the model has shown the interannual sea surface temperature variations and a warming trend of about 0.5$^{\circ}$C during the period around Korean Peninsula, as in the case of the observation. Therefore, it is concluded that the model is capable of simulating not only the mean states but also the variabilities of ocean under the given atmosphere boundary conditions.

  • In order to produce accurate initial condition of soil moisture for global Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), spin-up experiment is carried out using Noah Land Surface Model (LSM). The model is run repeatedly through 10 years, under the atmospheric forcing condition of 2008-2017 until climatological land surface state is achieved. Spin-up time for the equilibrium condition of soil moisture exhibited large variability across Koppen-Geiger climate classification zone and soil layer. Top soil layer took the longgest time to equilibrate in polar region. From the second layer to the fourth layer, arid region equilibrated slower (7 years) than other regions. This result means that LSM reached to equilibrium condition within 10 year loop. Also, spin-up time indicated inverse correlation with near surface temperature and precipitation amount. Initialized from the equilibrium state, LSM was spun up to obtain land surface state in 2018. After 6 months from restarted run, LSM simulates soil moisture, skin temperature and evaportranspiration being similar land surface state in 2018. Based on the results, proposed LSM spin-up system could be used to produce proper initial soil moisture condition despite updates of physics or ancillaries for LSM coupled with NWP.

  • In this study, spin-up flows in a rectangular container are analysed by using three-dimensional computation. In the numerical computation, we use the parallel computer system of PC-cluster type. We compared our results with those obtained by two-dimensional computation. Effect of velocity and vorticity on the flow is studied. The result shows that two-dimensional solution is in good agreement with the 3-D result. Attention is given to the region where the 3-D flow is significant.

  • In this paper we present the aspect of inertial oscillation typically observed in the spin-up of fluids at low Rossby numbers in a circular cylinder. Numerical computations for the quasi three-dimensional equation as well as one-dimensional equation are performed to estimate the predictability of the one-dimensional equation with Ekman pumping/suction models. It is assumed that the discrepancy between the two results may be attributed to the inertial oscillation The detailed analysis to the numerical results reveals that the axial plane is dominated by a comparatively strong oscillatory flows caused by the inertial oscillation. In view of the fact that the time-averaged flow field however agrees to the Taylor-Proudman theorem, it is recommended that further analysis is needed to obtain an improved one-dimensional model like the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for turbulent flows.
