  • In this study, the mechanical behavior and interface properties of boron nitride nanotube-poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites are predicted using the molecular dynamics simulations and the double inclusion model. After modeling nanocomposite unit cell embedding single-walled nanotube and polymer, the stiffness matrix is determined from uniaxial tension and shear tests. Through the orientation average of the transversely isotropic stiffness matrix, the effective isotropic elastic constants of randomly dispersed microstructure of nanocomposites. Compared with the double inclusion model solution with a perfect interfacial condition, it is found that the interface between boron nitride nanotube and polymer matrix is weak in nature. To characterize the interphase surrounding the nanotube, the two step domain decomposition method incorporating a linear spring model at the interface is adopted. As a result, various combinations of the interfacial compliance and the interphase elastic constants are successfully determined from an inverse analysis.

  • The parametric analysis on ultimate behavior of buried cylindrical GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) septic tank was presented. Two kinds of F.E. analysis model(soil-spring model and 3D full model) was constructed. The ultimate behavior of septic tank was investigated according to the size of stiffened steel ring and properties of underground soil. Ramberg-Osgood model and Druker-Prager model were used for material nonlinear characteristics of GFRP septic tank and soil, respectively. The diameter and thickness of stiffened steel ring inside septic tank, elastic modulus and internal friction angle of soil were selected for parametric variables. The ultimate behavior of septic tank, load-displacement, axial and hoop strain, were calculated and investigated.

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the effect of statistical number of droplets on the simulation of the sprinkler spray using fire field model. In order to simulate the sprinkler spray characteristics, the present study uses NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator version 5.2. A group of Lagrangian particles with similar droplet characteristics, such as diameter, velocity, temperature and so on, is represented by parcel concept to decrease the total number of droplets tracked in the simulation. The present study introduces a new parameter to represent the ratio between real number of droplets and computational parcels. The dependency of the number of parcels on the fire suppression characteristics and spray patterns is quantitatively examined for different ratio between the real number of droplets and computational parcels.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a nonlinear algorithm for the dynamic interaction analysis of KTX trains and bridge girders with consideration of separation and flange contact phenomena between wheel and rail. For this, three interaction models between wheel-rail are implemented and compared through numerical examples. That is, the spring model and the non-jump model are briefly explained, and a nonlinear contact model is then proposed to accurately simulate interaction forces of the train-bridge system. Dynamic interaction analysis of a simply supported girder and trains is performed and the analyzed results are presented and compared for the proposed contact model and the other model types. Particularly, flange contact phenomena in the nonlinear contact model are demonstrated under a specific condition.

  • The behavior of buried pipes is directly influenced by the nonlinearity and complex characteristics of the surrounding soil. However, the simplified beam-spring model, which ignores the nonlinearity and complex behavior of soil, is commonly used in practice. In response, several studies have employed continuum analysis methods to account for the nonlinear and complex behavior of the soil. This paper presents various numerical continuum analysis techniques and verifies their comparison with full-scale tests. The study found that reaction force results close to the full-scale test could be obtained by applying contact surface characteristics that take into account the interaction between the ground and the buried pipe. In the case of sharing pipe and soil node method and ignoring the interaction between pipe and soil, excessive reaction force was derived, and the failure shapes were different. In addition, this study applied the dynamic explicit analysis method, ALE method, and CEL method. It was confirmed that the displacement-reaction relationship and failure shape are similar to those of the static analysis.

  • Traditional computer simulation uses only traditional input and output devices. With the recent emergence of haptic techniques, which can give users kinetic and tactile feedback, the field of computer simulation is diversifying. In particular, as the virtual-reality-based surgical simulation has been recognized as an effective training tool in medical education, the practical virtual simulation of surgery becomes a stimulating new research area. The surgical simulation framework should represent the realistic properties of human organ for the high immersion of a user interaction with a virtual object. The framework should make proper both haptic and visual feedback for high immersed virtual environment. However, one model may not be suitable to simulate both haptic and visual feedback because the perceptive channels of two feedbacks are different from each other and the system requirements are also different. Therefore, we separated two models to simulate haptic and visual feedback independently but at the same time. We propose an adaptive mass-spring method as a multi-modal simulation technique to synchronize those two separated models and present a framework for a dual model of simulation that can realistically simulate the behavior of the soft, pliable human body, along with haptic feedback from the user's interaction.

  • As various haptic algorithms and haptic equipments have developed, the computer simulation includes the haptic simulation. Basically, the haptic simulation requires very fast refresh rate approximately 1000 Hz. The traditional haptic simulations have satisfied that requirement by simplifying the target model. In soft body simulation, simplifying the deformation is not good because the visual feedback is important. Separating haptic model from deformable model can be solution of that problem. However, the user may feel a subtle distiction because the relationship between two models are not clear. In this paper, we propose the hybrid model to manipulate haptic rendering and deformation and define the relationship between two models.

  • When sea tide and wave velocity change, the behavior of silt protectors underwater changes, and a hydraulic force exceeding the anchor wave force is applied. In this study, the movement mechanism of a silt protector has been analyzed using the mass-spring method. The initial position of the silt protector was in the Jindo area near Gwangpo Port (742-1, Gyupori, Chongdo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam, Korea). The tension required to exceed the holding power of the anchor was 0.05 m/s at 318 sec., 0.15 m/s at 77 sec., 0.25 m/s at 43 sec., and 0.3 m/s at 37 sec.. As the anchor started to move from the sea floor and the tide speed increased to 0.01 m/s, anchor movement start time shortened by an average of 11.2 sec.. Compared with when tide was the only affecting factor, the silt protector and anchor were found to have moved 19.7 % at 0.1 m/s, 7.6 % at 0.15 m/s, 5.8 % at 0.2 m/s, 4.3 % at 0.25 m/s and 2.8 % at 0.3 m/s, showing an increase. When wave effect was added to the tide, anchor movement started when the flow rate was slow 7.6 % of the time. With a high flow velocity, anchor movement started without any significant difference less than 4.3 % of the time. When tide speed exceeded 0.13 m/s and the direction of the waves matched, the silt protector was not able to perform due to collisions with surrounding sea structures. When installing a silt protector, the fluid flow situation and the silt protector situation must be carefully analyzed using the mass-spring method to apply the result found in this study.

  • Seismic performances of existing structures should be assessed with more accuracy for cost-effective retrofits. Existing bridges are assessed by the current guidelines in which a simple method has been adapted considering the technical level of engineers of the historical time of construction. Recently many probabilistic approaches have been performed to reflect the uncertainties of seismic input motions. Structures are modeled frequently with the neglection of soil foundations or modeled occasionally with elastic soil spring elements to consider the effect of the soil on the structural response. However, soil also shows nonlinearity under seismic events, so this characteristic should be reflected in order to obtain a more accurate assessment. In this study, a 6-span continuous bridge has been analyzed under various seismic events, in which the soil was represented by equivalent linear spring elements having different properties according to the intensities of the input motions experienced. The seismic vulnerabilities with respect to the failure of piers and the dropping of the super-structure were evaluated on the basis of the analysis results.

  • Ultrasonic testing of composite materials is much more difficult than that of isotropic materials, because of the beam skew phenomenon caused by their elastic anisotropy. An established analytical method exists for elastic wave propagation in anisotropic media as a result of previous research efforts. Yet, due to the complexity of the analytical method, solution of real problems must resort to the numerical method. In this work, analytical solutions have first been obtained for the wavefield due to a point source in a unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite, which may be modeled as transversely isotropic. Then, the corresponding numerical solutions have been obtained using the mass-spring lattice model(MSLM). The two solutions have agreed well with each other. Other problems such as reflection from free boundaries and scattering from cracks have also been solved numerically, and the results have been investigated from the viewpoint of wave mechanics. The numerical model whose validity has been confirmed by this work will be of great use in simulating ultrasonic testing of composite materials.
