  • The RC corbels with the ratio of shear span-to-effective depth less than 1 are commonly used to transfer loads from beams to columns. The ultimate strengths and structural behaviors of RC corbels are controlled by the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, strength of concrete, shape and quantity of the reinforcement, and geometry of corbels. In this study, a simple indeterminate strut-tie model reflecting all characteristics of the ultimate strengths and complicated structural behaviors is presented for the design of RC corbels. In addition, a load distribution ratio, defined as a magnitude of load transferred by a horizontal truss mechanism, is proposed to help structural designers perform the design of RC corbels by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. The ultimate strengths of 30 RC corbels tested to failure are evaluated by using the ACI 318-05's strut-tie model code for the validity check of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio.

  • A tensegrity structure consists of a set of continuous cables in tension and a set of discontinuous struts in compression. The tensegrity structure can be classified into self-stressed and pre-stressed pin-jointed structure. A key step in the design of tensegrity structures is the determination of their equilibrium configuration, known as form-finding. In this paper, three effective methods are presented for form-finding of tensegrity structures. After performing form-finding process, a set of force density and corresponding topology results can be obtained. Then the force density method combined with a genetic algorithm is adopted to uniquely define a single integral feasible set of force densities. Numerical examples are presented that demonstrate the excellent performance of the algorithms.

  • The earthquake which was recently occurred in Kyeongju area caused serious damage to several structures. It is needed to improve capacity against seismic of existing structures constructed before providing seismic design code. This paper is to verify the structural characteristics proposed diagonal steel dampers for existing structures to enhance the seismic resist capacity. The experimental and analysis study were undertaken to obtain the load-displacement relationships of diagonal steel dampers. The valuables were angels and spaces of strut. As a result, it is verified that the proposed steel damper is effective in the seismic reinforcement of existing structures.

  • In this study, the experimental results of 7 dampers with the same strut height and similar cross-sectional area were compared based on the existing research results on steel dampers with rocking behavior. As steel plate dampers, SI-260, SV-260, SS-260 without Lateral deformation prevention detail(Ldpd), I-1, V-1, S-1 with Ldpd, and R20-260 with steel rod damper were evaluated. In addition, R15-260, which has a cross-sectional area of 0.56 times than other dampers, was also reviewed to appropriately evaluate the behavior of the steel rod damper. An important study result is the application superiority of the steel rod damper, which improved the unidirectional behavior of the steel plate dampers. This was proved in the moment-resistance capacity and displacement ratio evaluation. As a result of the evaluation, the R20-260, a steel bar damper, was evaluated as having the best performance. In addition, it is judged to have sufficient seismic resistance as it shows deformability up to a displacement ratio of 2.0.

  • The brace is often used to resist lateral force such as that exerted by an earthquake. Because of buckling at bifurcation load, the brace shows unstable hysteretic characteristics in the plastic zone. Therefore, in this study, the brace with damper that consists of slit plates were suggested on the purpose of preventing buckling and increasing plastic deformation capacity. The experimental results regarding the brace member were analyzed and the feasibility was also examined.

  • This study investigates the thermal efficiency and the efficiency of heat transfer through thermal analysis when the same heat is applied to a mortar frame by firing with various configurations of mortar. As the inside diameter of the mortar increases, the additional material must be reinforced. In comparison with the extent of getting cold due to models, a mortar with the strut under the gun barrel becomes cooler than one with no strut. The thermal deformation at firing becomes different. According to the configuration of mortar and its inside diameter, the extent of getting cold becomes different. This study result can be effectively applied for improving the efficiency of the heat transfer of mortar.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the structural stability of a low speed 200 W class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code is adopted. The pressure distribution on the rotor blade surface is examined in detail. In order to perform unidirectional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis, the pressure resulted from CFD analysis has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of FSI analysis show that the wind turbine reveals an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.

  • Numerical solutions are presented for solving the free surface flow created by a three-dimensional body moving beneath the free surface with constant velocity at an angle of attack. The solution is obtained using a panel method based on the perturbation potential, which employs Havelock sources and normal dipoles distributed on the body surface and Havelock normal dipoles in the wake downstream of the trailing edge. A pressure Kutta condition with an iterative solution procedure is implemented to satisfy equal pressure condition on the upper and lower surfaces at the trailing edge. Numerical calculation examples in the present paper include an ellipsoid at zero angle of attack, a rectangular planform wing at a small angle of attack in the limit of zero Froude number and then free surface flows and hydrodynamic forces acting on the submerged spheroid and parabolic strut are calculated. Discussions are made about the validity of the present method.

  • The lattice structure is attracting attention from industry because of its excellent strength and stiffness, ultra-lightweight, and energy absorption capability. Despite these advantages, widespread commercialization is limited by the difficult manufacturing processes for complex shapes. Additive manufacturing is attracting attention as an optimal technology for manufacturing lattice structures as a technology capable of fabricating complex geometric shapes. In this study, a unit cell was formed using a three-dimensional coordinate method. The relative density relational equation according to the boundary box size and strut radius of the unit cell was derived. Simple cubic (SC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and face-centered cubic (FCC) with a controlled relative density were designed using modeling software. The accuracy of the equations for calculating the relative density proposed in this study secured 98.3%, 98.6%, and 96.2% reliability in SC, BCC, and FCC, respectively. A simulation of the lattice structure revealed an increase in compressive yield load with increasing relative density under the same cell arrangement condition. The compressive yield load decreased in the order of SC, BCC, and FCC under the same arrangement conditions. Finally, structural optimization for the compressive load of a 20 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm structure was possible by configuring the SC unit cells in a 3 × 3 × 3 array.
