  • The use of forest biomass resources produced by forest tending and residual forest biomass that was not gathered on commercial thinning or cutting area was estimated to be come into the spotlight as bioenergy sources in these days of new high oil price. With considering these problems, This study was investigated about possibility with biomass calculation and convertibility to fossil fuel in these area. Total forest tending area in the year 2005 was 294, 115 ha and the yield gathered from these area was $143,747m^3$. It is equivalent to biomass of 115,000 ton and caloric value of 533,199Gcal. However, the potential and additional yield that is residual in forest stands was 2,483,000 ton. It is equivalent to 11,133 billion won of oil which is 20 times of the actual yield produced by forest tending. Therefore, these amount of biomass has a substitution effect of the fossil fuel. Moreover, the residual biomass that is not gathered at commercial thinning and cutting area was 475,000 ton. It is equivalent to 2,206,235 Gcal of heating value and about 2,211 billion won of oil. This potential amount could be a new energy source to be a substitution effect of fossil fuel. It is time to be interested in the forest biomass as a renewable and environment-friendly resource and its substitution effect of fossil fuel.

  • Forest management is done to keep ecological health of forest and to enhancement of its function. Nowadays, the abnormal climate and heavy rain happen frequently. Therefore, there are opinions that the thinning slash allowed in the mountain is flowed in rivers, which can influence in flood damage. This study, we grasp moving characteristics of thinning slash through field survey and achieved basic study about the effect of thinning slash on the discharge capacity of rivers and stream structure.

  • Cage plots were established in 2008 to find the relationship between combination of tended Japanese red pine sapling and the habitation of Monochamus alternatus, a vector for pine wood nematode. Japanese red pine sapling tended at different times were successively put into the cage, and then the adult of Monochamus alternatus was put in June. Presence or absence of the larva was determined November. Sapling tendings were done at seven successive times in 2009, mid- and late February and March, mid-April, May and June. Some saplings were also tended in mid-October of 2008, the previous year of this experiment. The larva was found in all the saplings tended later than mid-March in 2009. No larva was found in the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and those in February of 2009. In case of the combination the by-products of mid-February and late March of 2009 and mid-October of 2008, the larva was found in the by-product of mid-February and late March of 2009, but those in mid-October of 2008 was not. When the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and mid- and late February of 2009 were put into the cage singly, the larva was found in all the saplings. Results indicated the mixture of the saplings tended at different times affected the habitation of Monochamus alternatus differently.

  • This study analyzed and compared characteristic of vegetation structure in Bonghwa mountain, the base Mt. outside urban area, and Hakseoung neighborhood park, Ilsan neighborhood park and Musil neighborhood park, disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area of Wonju. Regarding vegetation of urban forest in Wonju, Quercus mongolica forest and Robinia pseudo-acacia forest were widely distributed in the base Mt. outside urban area. Quercus acutissima forest and Robinia pseudo-acacia forest were widely distributed in the disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area. Forests in both areas were managed as part of forest management campaign. Analysis on importance value of a community classified by DCA and DBH class categorized communities into three groups according to the expected ecological succession. Community B was the one to be maintained as Pinus densiflora community. Community A, D and d were expected to be maintained as Quercus spp. Community. Community C, E, F, e, f and g were classified as exotic plant community. Ecological succession was suspended in both base Mt. outside urban area and disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area. However, importance value of Quercus spp. which appeared in the understory layer and shrub layer and their DBH class showed that the potential for ecological succession of exotic plant community was higher in base Mt. outside urban area than disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area. According to the analysis on number of species and individuals and species diversity, understory and shrub layer were reduced due to Forest Management campaign and plant species which appear at an earlier stage of succession varied as time went by since the campaign began. Species diversity comparison between natural and artificial forest showed no clear difference in both base Mt. outside urban area and disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area due to man-made disruption such as thinning and brush cutting. Six communities in base Mt. outside urban area had 17.76~52.22% of similarity index. Four communities in disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area showed 13.34~37.01% of similarity index, which was lower than base Mt. outside urban area. Among naturalized plants, Tupatorium rugosum and Phytolacca americana appeared more in disconnected residual Mt. inside urban area.

  • Nowaday, for the promotion of producing forest trees, production of excellent timbers, and build-up of public forest area, it is on the increase of the thinning-forest for artificial forest, natural forest, eco-friendly forest, and the forest for development and improvement of forest resources nationwide. Even though the thinning-forest is applied around 180,000ha every year, the quantity of collected/used products is only 18,000ha $(240,000m^3)$ which is 10% of the whole thinning-forest area. Meanwhile, some reports represent that the left products after thinning-forest might increase the severity of forest fire and the waste of resources. Therefore, this study focused on the analysis of correlation between the accumulated products after thinning-forest and forest fire, and providing a preparation plan for the forest fire.
