  • In distributed systems data are replicated and stored at several nodes to increase the availability and overall performance. Here Quorum protocol doffing a certain set of replicas required for read/write operation exists for global concurrency control. One of the representative replication Protocols - the Tree Quorum protocol - has a drawback of rapidly growing number of replicas as the level increases, while the Grid protocol requires the same operation cost even without any failure. In this paper, thus, we propose a new replication protocol called hybrid protocol which capitalizes the merits of the existing protocols and solves the problems of them at the same time. The proposed hybrid protocol has very low operation cost in the absence of failure like the tree quorum protocol, and has relatively lower operation cost and higher availability than existing protocols when failure occurs by employing tree architecture as the overall organization while each level of the tree is organized as a row of a grid architecture. It is thus effective to be applied to survival storage system. We conduct cost and availability analysis of the proposed protocol through mathematical modeling, and response time and throughput are compared with those of the Tree Quorum protocol through computer simulation.

  • The lambda calculus is a mathematical formalism in which functions can be formed, combined and used for computation that is defined as rewriting rules. With the development of the computer science, many programming languages have been based on the lambda calculus (LISP, CAML, MIRANDA) which provides simple and clear views of computation. Furthermore, thanks to the "Curry-Howard correspondence", it is possible to establish correspondence between proofs and computer programming. The purpose of this article is to make available, for didactic purposes, a subject matter that is not well-known to the general public. The impact of the lambda calculus in logic and computer science still remains as an area of further investigation.stigation.

  • Permutation and combination are the subjects that most teachers feel difficult to teach in Mathematics. This paper investigated evaluation items and factors of anxiety of students for permutation and combination, and further examined the way to lessen the factors of anxiety. Two high school students participated for over a year from December 2007 to February 2008. Also, two teachers joined for the analysis of evaluation items. We found that the ill-structured problems and word problems are the main factors to bring about the anxiety, whereas cooperative learning with high intelligent peers, practice to read word problems and write the process of problems solving are helpful in lessening the mathematical anxieties. Further we propose that the study of appropriate teaching and learning method for permutation and combination should be performed in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify high school students' mathematics learning style and its characteristics according to their personality disposition types and to propose mathematics learning strategies fit into each personality disposition type. For this purpose, MBTI personality test and survey to find mathematics learning style for 375 high school students were executed. The results were as follows. First, many students highly evaluated the effects of private education and prefer reference book to textbook. Second, there were significant differences on following variable domains of mathematics learning style such as learning attitude, learning habit(concentrativeness to concept understanding), problem solving strategies(effort for problem comprehension, use of various strategies), self management(metacognition) by MBTI personality disposition types(SJ, SP, NT, NF groups). Third, based on the results, the following mathematics learning strategies fit into each personality disposition type were recommended. SJ type students are needed to effort creative approach for open problem and to use mindmap as mathematics learning strategy. SP type students are needed to fulfill stepwise problem solving process and to effort constantly practice long/short term learning objectives. NT type students are needed to expand opportunity to study with friends and to use SRN(self reflection note) or mathematics journal writings as mathematics learning strategy. NF type students are needed to use mathematics learning note writing activity which include logical basis for each step of problem solving and to invest more time on learning algebra which need meticulous calculation.

  • Set constraints logic language is a language that adopts `set theory` in programming. In this paper, we introduce the procedure for solving set constraints proposed by A. Dovier and show how the procedure can be implemented in logic language Prolog. The procedure is represented in `rewriting rules` and this representation is characterized by having nondeterministic rule applicationsand mathematical variables that is difficult to be implemented in general programming languages. In this paper, we show that the representation can be easily implemented by using nondeterministic control, logical variables and data structure `list` provided in Prolog. Our implementation has following advantages.First we have implemented the full features of the language. Second we have described the implementation detail in thisresearch. Third other used the commercial Prolog called SICStus, but we are using CIAO Prolog with GNU GPL(General Public License) and anyone can use it freely. Forth the software of our implementation is open source so anyone can use, modify, and distribute it freely.

  • This study analyzed the academic achievements on above-level testing of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English in newly entering students of science specialized high schools. It can be expected that newly students of science high specialized schools have reached ceiling level in the middle school mathematics and science academic scores. Above-level testing(or off-level testing) is a test tool used to evaluate student's ability which are above-grade level. In this study, above-level testing tools were used to develop the same type examination paper of the 2013 Korean College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English. The conclusions of this study were as follow: First, the academic achievement level of science specialized high school freshmen were higher the average level of general high school senior because that over 50% of them are within the 5 grade of CSAT in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In English, 19.3% science specialized high school freshmen have reached within the 5 grade of CSAT. Second, as a result of examining characteristics of academic achievement with respect to units of subjects, in mathematics, it was showed that the academic achievement of 'continuity and limit of a function' unit was higher, 'statistics' unit was lower. In physics, the academic achievement of 'Electricity and Magnetism' unit was higher, 'Waves and particles' unit was lower. In chemistry, the academic achievement of 'compounds in life' unit was higher, 'Air' unit was lower. In English, the academic achievement of 'practical sentence' of reading area was higher, 'Sentence' of writing area was lower. In conclusion, above-level testing provided a good strategy for identifying and determining appropriate programming interventions for gifted students who are two or more grade levels above their age-mates in achievements, aptitude, or ability.
