  • As the value and importance of mathematical communication was recognized, mathematical communication in mathematics education has been strengthened more and more. Written communication as well as verbal communication is emphasized. On the other hand, storytelling is introduced for elementary students to learn mathematical concept more naturally and easily in the 2009 revised curriculum. So, we noticed that they are familiar with story. In this study, we analyze the story writing activity levels with a focus on story writing, and how to think about it. And we offer some suggestions about mathematical story writing activity.

  • A lot of researches state mathematical justification is important. Specially, NCTM (2000) mentions that mathematical reasoning and proof should be taught every student from pre-primary school to 12 grades. Some of researches say elementary school students are also able to prove and justify their own solution(Lester, 1975; King, 1970, 1973; Reid, 2002). Balacheff(1987), Tall(1995), Harel & Sowder(1998, 2007), Simon & Blume(1996) categorize the level or the types of mathematical justification. We re-categorize the 4 types of mathematical justification basis on their studies; external conviction justification, empirical-inductive justification, generic justification, deductive justification. External conviction justification consists of authoritarian justification, ritual justification, non-referential symbolic justification. empirical-inductive justification consists of naive examples justification and crucial example justification. Generic justification consists of generic example and visual example. The results of this research are following. First, elementary school teachers in Korea respectively understand mathematical justification well. Second, elementary school teachers in Korea prefer deductive justification when they justify by themselves, while they prefer empirical-inductive justification when they teach students.

  • According to a number of recent studies, Korean students' affective achievement was at much lower level than cognitive achievement, which indicated the needs for nationwide researches. Although a variety of effort was put into finding ways to improve students' affective achievement, few researches focused on teachers was being underway. Thus, this study was conducted with 327 secondary school mathematics teachers in Gyeonggi-do- by survey method to investigate on how teachers feel affective domain in their teaching practice, how much they it into account at class, and what their wills or plans are to put it into action. According to the results, there existed a distinctive gap between teachers and students in affective domain.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine not only students' cognition in the mathematical error-finding activity of the concept of irrational numbers, but also the students' learning stance regarding the use of errors and a teacher's questioning strategies that lead to changes in the level of mathematical discourse. To this end, error-finding individual activities, group activities, and additional interviews were conducted with 133 middle school students, and students' cognition and the teacher's questioning strategies for changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse were analyzed. As a result of the study, students' cognition focuses on the symbolic representation of irrational numbers and the representation of decimal numbers, and they recognize the existence of irrational numbers on a number line, but tend to have difficulty expressing a number line using figures. In addition, the importance of the teacher's leading and exploring questioning strategy was observed to promote changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse. This study is valuable in that it specified the method of using errors in mathematics teaching and learning and elaborated the teacher's questioning strategies in finding mathematical errors.

  • This study aims to develop strategies for improving the affective characteristics of Korean students based on results from international achievement tests. In pursuing the goal, different research methods are employed including a) analysis of the theories and literature regarding the affective domains included in PISA and TIMSS studies; b) analysis of the current situation and needs of Korean students with respect to the affective factors based on PISA and TIMSS results; c) case studies of best practices in relation to students' affective domains in Korea and abroad; and d) development of strategies for improving and supporting Korean students' affective characteristics. Especially, this paper deals with the analysis of the results from in-depth interviews and class observations, so as to identify the current situation and best practice cases of students' affective characteristics education in Korea. The results are classified into a) curriculum, which is in turn divided into national curriculum and reconstruction of curriculum school and classroom; and b) teaching, learning and evaluation, which is in turn divided into learner characteristics, motivation, teaching strategies, class grouping, activities and interaction, question and feedback, evaluation methods, and evaluation tools. Support plans in terms of school and social environments are also suggested based on the results.

  • This study examined the structural relationships among parental attitudes and expectations toward mathematics, mathematics motivation and achievement of their child in PISA 2012 of South Korea. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling(SEM) analysis. The results were as follows: First, parental attitudes toward mathematics had positive effects on parent academic and professional expectations in mathematics. Second, parental expectations also had positive effects on intrinsic motivation, instrumental motivation and math achievement for their child. Third, instrumental motivation had strongest effects on math achievement. The next factors which had effects on math achievement were intrinsic motivation and parental expectations in order. This results shows that the parental awareness of the usefulness and necessity of mathematics will help to increase the interest and value toward mathematics, math achievement and interest of math related carriers of their child.

  • The purpose of this research is to draw some implications for reducing gender differences in educational achievement of mathematics by inquiring those in mathematics-related attitudes. For this purpose, this article analyzed the gender difference in mathematics-related attitudes of the elementary, middle, and high school students. Also, mathematics-related attitudes according to achievement levels was analyzed. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, in the scores on mathematics-related attitudes, male students were significantly higher than those of female students. Secondly, in the evaluation of the subordinate factors of mathematics-related attitudes, gender differences were shown a little bit larger in the areas of interest and self confidence than in the area of perception of mathematics value regardless of grades. Thirdly, in all schools, the higher achievement level is, the higher the score of mathematics-related attitudes is. Lastly, gender differences on mathematics-related attitudes in advanced level group is bigger than those in other level groups.

  • Studying functions is the fundamental that makes people understand complicate social events by using mathematical symbol system. But there are not enough program design and Teaching-learning strategy for mathematical-gifted student. So this research aim to design education program and teaching-learning strategy in functions area for mathematical-gifted student. 1 use real life-related problems to make students develop their problem-solving skill. And in this research I encourage students to study functions by grouping, discussion and presentation for self-directed teaming.
