Instrumented sharp indentation test is a well-directed method to measure hardness and elastic modulus. The sharp indenter such as Berkovich and conical indenters have a geometrical self-similarity in theory, but the self-similarity ceases to work in practice due to inevitable indenter tip-blunting. In this study we analyzed the load-depth curves of conical indenter with finite tip-radius via finite element method. Using the numerical regression data obtained from Kick's law, we first confirmed that loading curvature is significantly affected by tip radius as well as material properties. We then established a new method to evaluate Young's modulus, which successfully provides the value of elastic modulus with an average error of less than 2%, regardless of tip-radius and material properties of both indenter and specimen.
The interlaminar facture behavior of multidirectional carbon-fiber/epoxy composite laminates under low and high rates of test, up to rate of about 11.4m/s has been investigated using the double cantilever beam specimens. The mode I loasing with rates above 1.0m/s had considerable dynamic effects on the load-time curves and thus revealed higher values of the average crack velocity than thet expected from a simple proportional relationship with the test rate. The modified beam analysis utilizing only the opening displacement and crack length exhibited an effective means for evaluating the dynamic fracture energy $G_{IC}$. Flexural modulus increased gradually with an increase of the test rate, which was utilized in the evaluation of $G_{IC}$. Values of $G_{IC}$ at the crack initiation and arrest were scarcely changed with increasing test rate up to 1.0m/s. However the maximum $G_{IC}$ was much enlarged at 11.4m/s due to the large amount of fiber bridging the crack tip. The larger the initial crack length, the smaller the maximum $G_{IC}$ at high rate.
In general typically granular soils contain a certain amount of fines. It is also widely recognized that foundation soils under working loads show highly non-linear behavior from very early stages of loading. In the present study, a series of laboratory tests with sands of different silt contents are conducted and methods to assess strength and stiffiness characteristics are proposed. Modified hyperbolic stress-strain model is used to analyze non-linearity of silty sands in terms of non-linear Degradation parameters f and g as a function of silt contents and Relative density Dr. Stress-strain curves were obtained from a series of triaxial tests on sands containing different amounts of silt. Initial shear modulus, which is used to normalize Degradation modulus of silty sands, was determined from resonant column test results. From the laboratory test results, it was observed that, as the Relative density increases, values of f decrease and those of g increase. In addition, it was found that values of f and g increase and decrease respectively as a Skeleton void ratio $(e_{sk})$ increases.

The opening angle of the duct cap assembly during the operation of a refrigerator ice dispenser was evaluated by transient structural analysis, and an improved design to maximize the opening angle was obtained. The opening angle of the existing design was found to be 78% of the upper limit. Several design modifications were proposed and analyzed to examine the effects of the design factors on the opening angle. As a result of the design modifications, the opening angle was improved by changing the lever material to a material with a high elastic modulus, moving the position of the support to the motor side, or increasing the lever shaft diameter. Considering the manufacturing cost of the new design, the design modification changing only the lever material was found to be the best because it does not require a change in the structure of the ice dispenser case. In conclusion, the opening angle can be improved by up to 95% of the upper limit value if the lever material is changed to an aluminum alloy. The methods and results presented in this study were found to be of great help in designing the duct cap assembly structure to facilitate the discharge of ice.

A bellows is an important temperature control component in a Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler. It is designed using a very thin shell, and the inside of the bellows is filled with nitrogen gas. The bellows is made of a nickel-cobalt alloy that maintains its strength and elastic properties in a wide range of temperatures from cryogenic to $300^{\circ}C$. The pressure of the gas and the volume within the bellows vary according to the temperature of the gas. As a result, the bellows contracts or expands in the axial direction like a spring. To explore this phenomenon, the deformation of the bellows and its internal volume must be calculated iteratively under a modified pressure until the state equation of the gas is satisfied at a given temperature. In this paper, the modified Benedict-Webb-Rubin state equation is adopted to describe the temperature-volume-pressure relations of the gas. Experiments were performed to validate the proposed method. The results of a numerical analysis and the experiments showed good agreement.

Natural frequency is a key parameter to determine the seismic and wind loading of tall flexible structures, and to assess the wind-induced vibration for serviceability check. In this study, natural frequencies and associated mode shapes were obtained from measured acceleration data and system identification technique. Subsequently, finite element(FE) models for a tall reinforced concrete buildings were built using a popular PC-based finite element analysis program and calibrated to match their natural frequencies and mode shapes to actual values. The calibration of the FE model included: 1) compensation of modulus of elasticity considering the mix design strength, 2) flexural stiffness of floor slabs, and 3) major non-structural components such as plain concrete walls. Natural frequencies and mode shapes from the final FE model showed best agreement with the measured values.
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the capacity of strength and plastic deformation of those members, and provide experimental data on the seismic behavior of these members as a basis for developing guidelines for designing seismically resistant concrete-filled steel tubular columns. Eighteen cantilever-type specimens were tested under constant axial load and cyclically lateral load as models of bottom columns in high-rise building. The parameters studied in the test program included, are width-thickness ratio of steel tube, slenderness ratio (Lo/D) and axial force ratio. From the test results, the effects of parameters on the strength, the deformation capacity, energy absorption capacity are discussed. The specimen flexural capacity under combined axial and lateral loading was found to be almost accurately predicted by criteria AIJ and AISC-LRFD providing conservative results. Therefore KSSC for encased composite column can be applied to the concrete filled column if composite section and elastic modulus are modified according to AIJ and AISC-LRFD. Finally, the proposed flexural capacity considering confinement effects is a food agreement on the tests results.

ECC is a special kind of high performance cementititous composite which exhibits typically more than 2% tensile strain capacity by bridging microcracks at a crack section. Therefore, micromechanics should be adopted to obtain multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior. This paper propose a linear elastic analysis method to simulate the multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior of ECC. In an analysis, the stress-crack opening relation modified considering the orientation of fibers and the number of effective fibers is adopted. Furthermore, to account for uncertainty of materials and interface between materials, the randomness is assigned to the tensile strength(${\sigma}_{fci}$), elastic modulus($E_{ci}$), peak bridging stress(${\sigma}_{Bi}$) and crack opening at peak bridging stress(${\delta}_{Bi}$), initial stress at a crack section due to chemical bonding, (${\sigma}_{0i}$), and crack spacing(${\alpha}_cX_d$). Test results shows the number of cracking and stiffness of cracked section are important parameters and strain hardening behavior and maximum strain capacity can be simulated using the proposed method.

An atomistic-based finite bond element model for predicting the tearing mode (mode III) fracture of a single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) is developed. The model uses the modified Morse potential for predicting the maximum strain relationship of graphene sheets. The mode III fracture of graphene under out-of-plane shear loading is investigated with extensive molecular mechanics simulations. Molecular mechanics is used for describing the displacements of atoms in the area near a crack tip, and linear elastic fracture mechanics is used outside this area. This work shows that the molecular mechanics method can provide a reliable and yet simple method for determining not only the shear properties of SLGS but also its mode III fracture toughness in the armchair and the zigzag directions; the determined mode III fracture toughness values of SLGS are $0.86MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ and $0.93MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, respectively.

In this report, new standard, published by Japanese Geotechnical Society, on in-situ stress measurements by hydraulic fracturing was reviewed. In the standard, modification was made for the calculation of fracture re-opening pressure in consideration of fracture surface roughness and residual aperture. The standard also presents how much the system compliance influences the estimation of the fracture re-opening pressure and subsequent in-situ stresses. It is shown that the stiffer the rock mass is, the system compliance should be sufficiently small enough so as to obtain in-situ stress measurement with higher confidence.
