  • A simple web-based flood forecasting system using data from stage and rainfall monitoring stations was developed to solve the difficulty that real-time forecasting model could not get the reliabilities because of assumption of future rainfall duration and intensity. The regression model in this research could forecast future water level of maximum 2 hours after using data from stage and rainfall monitoring stations in Daejeon area. Real time stage and rainfall data were transformed from web-sites of Geum River Flood Control Office & Han River Flood Control Office based MS-Excel 2007. It showed stable forecasts by its maximum standard deviation of 5 cm, means of 1~4 cm and most of improved coefficient of determinations were over 0.95. It showed also more researches about the stationarity of watershed and time-series approach are necessary.

  • This study aimed to identify the growth performance of Korean indigenous chicken pure-line by sex and twelve strains conserved in Poultry Research Institute, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration. The effect of sex and strain on body weight was significantly different in every period, with males being heavier in all periods than females. In the case of biweekly weight gain, the tendency to increase rapidly from birth to six weeks old, and to decrease in the period from twelve to fourteen weeks old was common across all sex and strains. Depending on sex and strain, there were significant differences in age and the number of peaks. Regardless of sex and strain, the determination coefficient and adjusted determination coefficient showed high goodness of fit (99.1~99.9%) to growth functions. However, for each model, the goodness-of-fit had variations by sex and strains. von Betalanffy function had the best fit to growth curves in all the female strains except strain D. On the other hand, Gompertz function had the best fit for all the male strains except strain C. Logistic function showed the lowest goodness-of-fit in all sex and strains. Mature weights were in the order of von bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic models, while growth ratio and maturing rate followed the order of logistic, gompertz, and von bertalanffy functions. This information could be useful for Korean indigenous chicken management and designing crossbreeding tests and breeding programs.

  • This study investigated the use of Geobacter lovleyi with TBOS(Tetrabutoxysilane) for TCE(Trichloroethylene) dechlorination. The TCE dechlorination by Geobacter lovleiy was mathematically described as the independent variables such as initial concentration of TCE, protein mass of Geobacter lovleyi and initial concentration of TOBS, and these were modeled by the use of response surface methodology(RSM). These experiments were carried out as a Box-Behnken Design(BBD) consisting of 15 experiments. The application of RSM yielded the following equation, which is empirical relationship for the dechlorination efficiency($Y_1$, %) of TCE and first order kinetic constant of TCE($Y_2,\;d^{-1}$) by independent variables in coded unit : $Y_1=-11.50X_1$(initial concentration of TCE) + $4.25X_2$(protein mass as Geobacter lovleyi injected mass) - $4.75X_3$(initial concentration of TBOS) - ${6.58X_1}^2$ - ${8.58X_2}^2$ + 93.67, $Y_2=-10.92X_1+5.06X_2-4.89X_3-{4.93X_3}^2-2.19X_1X_2+2.54X_1X_3-2.19X_2X_3+16.71$. In this case, the value of the adjusted determination coefficient(adjusted $R^2$= 0.975 and 0.934) were closed to 1, showing a high significance of the model. Statistical results showed the order of TCE dechlorination at experimental factors to be initial TCE concentration > initial TBOS concentration > protein mass, but the interaction effects were non-significant.

  • Emulsified Asphalt Mixture(EAM) is more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective than typical Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) because EAM does not produce carcinogenic substances, e.g., naphtha, kerosene, during the both of manufacturing and roadway construction process. Also, it does not require heating the aggregates and asphalt binder. However, EAM has some disadvantages. Generally EAM has a less load bearing capacity and more moisture susceptibility than conventional HMA. The study evaluated a Fiber modified EAM (FEAM) to increase load bearing capacity and to decrease moisture susceptibility of EAM. Modified Marshall mix design was developed to find Optimum Emulsion Contents (OEC), Optimum Water Contents (OWC), and Optimum Fiber Contents (OFC). A series of test were performed on the fabricated specimen with OBC, OWC, and OFC. Tests include Marshall Stability, Indirect Tensile Strength, and Resilient modulus test. Comparison analyses were performed among EAM, Fiber modified EAM (FEAM), and typical HMA to verify the applicability of EAM and FEAM in the field. Test results indicated that both of EAM and FEAM have an enough capability to resist medium traffic volume based on the Marshall mix design criteria. Also the study found that fiber modification is effective to increase the load bearing capacity and moisture damage resistance of EAM.

  • Final goal of this research is to establish the database for correlation factors which connects the test and analysis results of shear buckling allowables for composite plate. To accomplish the goal, extensive test and analysis works are required. In this paper, as the first step, a frame-type fixture for shear buckling test was designed and validated through the test and analysis. Final configuration of the fixture were determined via parametric study on the effect of specimen size, cross-sectional dimensions, and number of fastening bolts on the shear buckling load. Results of the study showed the designed frame-type fixture successfully induces the shear buckling of composite plate. However, there were deviations between the test results and analysis results for ideal case under pure shear load, which were mainly caused by the difference in plate sizes for both cases. The difference were larger in the plates with larger hole and simply supported boundary condition. It is concluded from the results that while the designed fixture can be used for the clamped plates with acceptable accuracy, it shows larger difference in the simply supported plates.

  • Different types of schemes have been used in stage prediction involving conceptual and physical models. Nevertheless, none of these schemes can be considered as a single superior model. To overcome disadvantages of existing physics based rainfall-runoff models for stage predicting because of the complexity of the hydrological process, recently the data-derived models has been widely adopted for predicting flood stage. The objective of this study is to evaluate model performance for stage prediction of the Neuro-Fuzzy and regression analysis stage prediction models in these data-derived methods. The proposed models are applied to the Wangsukcheon in Han river watershed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed models, fours statistical indices were used, namely; Root mean square error(RMSE), Nash Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient(NSEC), mean absolute error(MAE), adjusted coefficient of determination($R^{*2}$). The results show that the Neuro-Fuzzy stage prediction model can carry out the river flood stage prediction more accurately than the regression analysis stage prediction model. This study can greatly contribute to the construction of a high accuracy flood information system that secure lead time in medium and small streams.

  • Tensile constitutive stress-strain model of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) in fib MC2010 was investigated. In order to model tensile behavior of SFRC, three point loading flexural tests were conducted on notched small beams according to BE-EN-14651. Design parameters for the constitutive model were determined from the flexural tests. Flexural test and finite element analysis were conducted on large SFRC beam without steel reinforcements and compared with each other. In addition, parametric study on the effect of compressive and tensile model, and characteristic length on flexural behavior of the SFRC beam was conducted also. In results, pre-peak load-displacement curves from the FE analysis was close to experimental curves but significant difference was shown in post-peak behavior. The reason of the difference is originated from the fact that the fiber distribution and orientation were not being properly considered in the MC2010 model. This study shows that modification and detail explanations on the orientation factor K in MC2010 might require to better reproduce the behaviour of large scale SFRC beams.

  • Double-peak normal distribution function was suggested as the probability density function of the non-tidal components (NTC) data in Korean coastal zone. Frequency distribution analysis of the NTC data was carried out using hourly tidal elevation data of the ten tidal gauging stations, i.e., Incheon, Gunsan, Mokpo, Jeju, Yeosu, Masan, Gadeokdo, Busan, Pohang, and Sokcho which were served through the Internet Homepage by the National Ocean Research Institute. NTC data is defined as the difference between the measured tidal elevation data and the astronomical tidal elevation data using 64 tidal constituents information. Based on the RMS error and R2 value comparison analysis, it was found that this suggested function as the probability density function of the NTC data was found to be more appropriate than the normal distribution function. The parameters of the double-peak function were estimated optimally using Levenberg-Marquardt method which was modified from the Newton method. The standard deviation and skewness coefficient were highly correlated with the non-tidal constants of the tidal gauging stations except Mokpo, Jeju and Sokcho stations.
