  • This study was performed to investigate change in chemical composition of Acer mono saps collected in Hamyang, Inje, Namyangju and Yeongwol depending on storing period. pH of A. mono sap was in the range of 4.43~5.68, and it was decreased rapidly with the increase of storing period. A. mono sap collected in Yeongwol in Feb. 22 contained 2.06% sucrose. Degradation of sucrose was occurred when storing period was extended, and it caused production of organic acid like pyruvic acid, lactic acid, acetic acid and ethanol. Detected minerals in A. mono sap were K, Ca, Na, Mg, P, Si, Al, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn, however, K and Ca content reached 93%. A. mono sap collected in Inje in Mar. 03 contained 131.72 mg/${\ell}$, which was especially high K content among the A. mono sap. 1.55~3.50 mg/${\ell}$ of Ascorbic acid was found in the A. mono sap. Sap collected in early date was less degraded.

  • We investigated the effects of ultra filtration (UF) of Goroshoe (Acer mono Max.) sap collected in March and April. The total bacteria and turbidity of the sap collected in April were higher than in March. However, after UF, the turbidity decreased and bacteria were not detected. The total acidity and total sugar of the sap collected in April were lower than that collected in March. After UF, total acidity and total sugar decreased slightly in sap from both of the collection times. The crude ash and mineral content of the sap collected in April were higher than in March. In particular, the calcium and potassium content of the sap collected in April were 166.38 and 29.47 mg/L, respectively, which was much higher than in March. Again, after UF, the crude ash and mineral content were decreased in the sap from both collection times. We concluded that UF of Goroshoe sap increased its quality regardless of collection time.

  • Using GJS and fuzzy sets, a model was developed for evaluating the site-suitability of forest stands for extracting sap of Acer pictum Thunb. var. mono in Mt. Baekun area. In the model, the productivity of sap extraction was expressed as the function of biotic and abiotic site factors. Among the factors, the topographic terrain conditions and accessibility of forest stands were chosen to consider working environment of the sap extraction. The difference in measurements of the factors between sap-extraction and non-sap-extraction forest stands was used in determining the weight of the relative importance for sap extraction productivity. The weight for distance-to-stream, vegetation type and shading condition turned out relatively higher than those for tree age, distance-to-road and DBH. Based on the results, a site-suitability map in Mt. Baekun area for sap extraction was built.

  • This paper describes the medical and IT convergence system using a smart phone and a heuristic method for the measurement of the dripping speed of the liquid in a drip chamber, which can estimate the remaining time using pattern recognition and difference image from video frame information based on Android technology. The video frames were first made using a smartphone camera and we calculated the difference image between the n image and the (n-1) image and then changed into binary images using the threshold value. At this point, it is very important to find an optimal threshold value using heuristic method to recognize the dripping of the liquids. In addition, the user can adjust the dripping speed according to the doctor's prescription, exactly like watching the progress bar of a mobile application. The experiment results show that our method using video processing technique accurately measures the dripping speed for a wide range of speeds that are sufficient for ordinary practice.

  • The intravenous injection monitoring system used by medical institutions was developed to remotely provide patients with the amount of intravenous injected and the termination point of the injection. In order to measure the amount of intravenous injection input, the weight or flow rate of the level going out from the inside to outside of the intravenous injection can be observed with a measuring sensor. The criteria for devices that apply herein are accuracy and vigilance. In addition, it is compact and should be easy to use when installing intravenous injection on patients. In medical institutions, the accuracy of the measured values must be high, and economically inexpensive devices are required. In this study, low-cost small-weight-centered load cell sensors were applied, and algorithms were applied to reduce the artefact by external movement by converging with gyro sensors for accuracy of measurements. As a result, it was possible to reduce the error of measurement, thereby improving the accuracy of the intravenous injection monitoring measurement value.

  • Purpose : We investigated the effects of restricted fluid in the first 7 days of life on the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Methods : Eighty three VLBW infants who lived more than 28 days were selected. The amount of daily maintenance fluid was determined by calculation of insensible water loss (IWL) and urine output (UO). Seventy to 80 percent of calculated amount was given to the ventilated infants. Subjects were grouped into low (<25th%), moderate (25-75th%), and high (>75th%) fluid groups for the first 24 hours, 3 days and 7 days. Chi square tests analyzed proportions of subjects with or without morbidities across fluid groups. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the effect of fluid intake on BPD or PDA, controlling for factors that are significantly associated with BPD or PDA by univariate analysis. Results : Rates of BPD and PDA were not significantly associated with fluid groups on each time period. The result was the same after controlling for factors that are significantly associated with BPD or PDA by univariate analysis. For the first 3 and 7 days, fluid intakes were positively related with maximal weight loss, urine output and mechanical ventilation duration. Conclusion : In VLBW infants, when given based on needs reflected from IWL and UO versus intake, relatively low fluid intakes in the first week of life do not decrease the risk of BPD or PDA, and vice versa. We suggest that calculation of daily fluid based on IWL and UO is appropriate for VLBW infants.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the optimum condition for sap exudation of Juglans mandshurica in comparison with Acer mono Max. trees in a site of Inje-Gun, Gangwon-Do, Korea. Amount of sap exudation, air temperature, relative air humidity and tree diameter at breast height (DBH) were monitored for the period of February 1 through March 31, 2008, and correlation analysis of several factors affecting on sap exudation was carried out. Sap exudation from J. mandshurica initiated on Feb. 28 as the same time in case of A. mono and continued for a month, and enhanced in early March compared to around the middle of March for A. mono. The amount of sap of A. mono was linearly proportional to the diameter at breast height (DBH) but there was no apparent relationship for J. mandshurica. As the amount of sap exudation per tree increased then sap exudation per unit DBH was also linearly proportional in both J. mandshurica and A. mono. The amount of sap exudation per unit DBH of J. manshurica were $0.3{\pm}0.1{\ell}/cm$ on average, which was one third times of $0.9{\pm}0.1{\ell}/cm$ for A. mono. During the days of enhanced sap exudation, the atmospheric conditions such as air temperature and relative humidity around J. manshurica trees were very similar with those of A. mono. The minimum temperature was a significant factor affecting the amount of sap of J. mandshurica whereas the range of temperature was the principal factor for A. mono. In conclusion, the sap of J. mandshurica exudated in atmospheric conditions similar to A. mono, but the amount of sap was affected by different atmospheric factors compared to A. mono.

  • Sensitivity of anti-Texoplasma antibody (IgG) test by enzyme·linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated in comparison with indirect laten agglutination (ILA) using 2,016 paired human samples of serum and cerebrospinal quid (CSF) . The samples were collected from neurologic patients in Korea with mass lesions in central nervous system(CNS) as revealed by imaging diagnosis(CTIMRI). When the sera were screened for anti-Toxoplasma antibody by ILA, 76 cases (3.8%) were positive (1:32 or higher titers). In the pairs samples of CSF, no positive reactions were observed. When ELISA was performed using PBS extract of Percoll purified tachysoites as antigen, cut-off absorbance was determined as 0.40 for serum and 0.27 for CSF tests. The antibody positive rates by ELISA were 7.0% in serum and 5.6% in CSF Of them, 40 cases(2.0%) showed positive reactions in both serum and CSF, The antibody positive rates were higher in groups older than 40 years, The rates were higher in male(4.7% by ILA, 8.3% by ELISA) than in female(2.2% by ILA, 5.0% by ELISA). The rates in CSF showed no such sex difference. ELISA showed twice higher positive rates when serum was tested, and was sensitive enough to detect specific antibodies in CSF. Etiologic relations between positive antibody tests and CNS lesions remained unknown.
