  • Wilting and transpiration charactistics of Panax ginseng leaves were investigated at two temperature levels. Water potential and water absorption characteristics of leaf segments were also observed. Soybean leaves were compared. 1. Ginseng leaves were thiner, higher in water content and lower in dehydration rate. But time required to reach permanent wilting point (pwp) was less than half of that of soybean leaves because water content at pwp was about two times higher (80% of initial water for ginseng and 50% for soybean leaves). The time was shorter under high air temperature. 2. Transpiration rate was about a quater of soybean leaves and lower at $33^{\circ}C$ than $23^{\circ}C$, indicating that ginseng leaves are less tolorant to high air temperature. 3. Ginseng leaf segment showed smaller water free space but greater water deficit and little difference in was absorption rate. 4. Water potential of leaves measured by liquid immersion method was lower than that of soybean leaves. 5. Above results strongly suggest that ginseng plants are more susceptible to water stress. Thus greater light intensity during leaf growing stage (April to June) is recommendable to increase stomate frequency resulting greater transpiration rate and high temperature tolerance during July and August. Abundant water around roots seems to be beneficial as long as oxygen is not limited in rhizosphere.

  • Reclaimed lands, expected as high-tech export horticultural complex, have unusual light environments due to sea fog. For adequate greenhouse design at reclaimed land, spatial light distributions in greenhouse should be required considering diffusive and direct lights. The objectives of this study were to analyze light environments and estimate spatial light distributions in greenhouse at reclaimed land by 3D greenhouse models. Total and diffusive lights were compared between reclaimed land and inland. For verification of the 3D greenhouse models, spatial light distributions and measured light intensities in greenhouse were compared with the estimated ones. Light environments at reclaimed land showed a higher diffusive irradiation than at inland, especially near sunrise and sunset. The estimated spatial light distributions in greenhouse showed good agreements with the measured ones. By using this method, we could estimate the average light intensity with time and spatial light distributions in greenhouse at specific outside light conditions. This result will be useful for analysis of light environments but also estimation of crop light inception in greenhouse at reclaimed land.

  • Seasenal absorption of inorganic nutrients and dry matter Production were studied with four-year-old ginseng plant. The residuary amounts of the nutrients supplied to ginseng Plantation were decreased with lime elapsed. The decreasing rate was greater in chemical plots than in Yacto Plots. The amounts of manure applied in this current year and growth in dry matter production of ginseng showed no signficant difference. The amounts of mineral nutrients per unit dry matter were proportional to the amounts of supplied with chemical fertilizer in the early period of growing season but with Yacto in the late season of growing. Seasonal changes of nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium contents per unit dry weight in each organ were high in the middle of May. They decreased sharply in the middle of June and then slowly decreased in both leaves and stems but gradually increased in roots. The absorption ratio of nitrogen to Phosphorus (N/P) was high, and that of nitrogen to Potassium (N/K) was few. The amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and Potassium in leaves became lower with increasing the relative light intensity, but in stems, the concentrations were different with the kind of mineral nutrients. The requisite amounts of mineral nutrient of ginseng plant were 8.3∼9.9 kg of nitrogen, 1.2∼1.5 kg of phosphorus, 6.4∼7.9 kg of potassium Per 10 a for five years.

  • In this research, the intensity of solar energy, which was injected to the different angle plane every hour day by day, was technically documented and quantitatively analyzed through actual observations. In order to group every days into days with similar intensity, graph was drawn with respect to time for every day and each area value under the curve was calculated. Then, the search for grouped days having similar intensity curve patterns was carried out. In order to maximize the efficiency of solar energy systems, the optimum incident angle of absorber plate was derived.

  • Effects of light, methyl jasmonate(MJ), 6-benzylaminopurine(BA), thidiazouron(TDZ), and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D) on the contents of ecdysteroids (${\beta}$-ecdysone+polypodine B) in Polypodium vulgare L. and Achyranthes japonica Nakai were studied. When the plants of P. vulgare were cultured under light control, the ecdysteroids contents in both leaves and rhizomes decreased with increasing light intensity. The ecdysteroids contents in A. japonica were also lower when cultured under light than under dark. Among the tested plant growth regulators, MJ, BA, and TDZ increased the ecdysteroids contents in both P. vulgare and A. japonica.

  • Air temperature was continuously measured in hilly pear orchards at 4 sites with elevations of 10, 49, 104 and 253 m above sea level. The mean air temperature, averaged over the 10-month period from August 2001 to June 2002, decreased as the site elevation increased by 0.2$^{\circ}C$ per 100 m. This weak lapse condition was amplified during daytime by sun-slope geometry. But on most days an inversion condition began by sunset and persisted until the next sunrise. During the observation period, daily minimum temperature at the valley bottom was lower than that of the hilltop on 67% of the days, and the average temperature difference was 1.4$^{\circ}C$. Inversion of daily minimum temperature under clear sky conditions was stronger in spring and autumn than in winter with a maximum of 6$^{\circ}C$. Lapse condition was predominant in daily minimum temperature on rainy days, and the lapse rate was strongest in winter.

  • P+N and P+NN+ solar cells with the area of 3.36 $\textrm{cm}^2$ were fabricated by thermal diffusion. Under the light intensity of 100 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$, total area(active area) conversion efficiency was 13.4%(14.7%) for P+N cell fabricated by 15 min boron predeposition at 94$0^{\circ}C$ and 20 min annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$, and 14.3%(15.6%) for P+NN+ cell processed by 15 min boron predeposition at 94$0^{\circ}C$ and 50 min annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$ after 20 min back phosphorus diffusion at 1,05$0^{\circ}C$. The minority carrier lifetime in bulk of P+NN+ cells was increased about 2~3 times comparing with P+N cells because of guttering and BSF effect due to back phosphorus doping. The methods used for efficiency improvement were AR coating, Ag electroplating, back doping and fine grid pattern as well as the control of front doping profile.

  • To understand the growth pattern of ginseng plant under shading, the vertical distribution of leaf area, leaf area index (LAI) and specific leaf weight (SLW) and changes in light intensity as affected by planting position were investigated in 3 to 5 years old ginseng plant populations. Light intensity was vertically lowest at about 10cm above the ground and became low at the rear planting position in 3-year-old population. When culturing bed (96cm in width) were divided into three parts at intervals of 32cm from front to rear, the leaf area in 3-year-old population was largest in middle 1/3 part of planting bed. Light intensity affected the SLW positively, but LAI showed no distinct difference among planting positions. The light environment of 4-year-old population was worse than that of 3-year-old population and leaf area and LAI differed greatly among planting positions. In 5-year-old population, leaf dry weight and leaf area of furrow part (that is, the amount of leaves protruded from the plants which were planted in 1st, 2nd or 3rd lines into the furrow) increased. The dry weights of leaves and stem increased considerably as plant became aged, and were distributed mainly in upper layer.

  • Five major naturally populated habitats around the Mt. Daeduk, Gangwon province for wild Chuiangne (Pyrus ussuriensis var. acidula) are mostly located on the southeast side of the mountains at 1,216-1,306m in altitude at sea level and are in very good sunney areas. The total of 96 taxa dividing into 40 families, 79 genera 84 species and 12 varieties have in these areas. Most of these plants are heliophytes, which love sunshine, Compositaes such as Artemisia stolonifera, Synurus deltoides, or Rosaceaes like Potentilla fragarioides var. major are also shown. These areas have been unknown destroyed, so it is possibly thought the second transition has been progressed. The index of species diversity of plant groups in these areas is 4.715-5.270 based on the Shannon-Wiener's method. The wild Chuiangne with 34.15%, which are 5-10㎝ DBH, have been found in habitats. The vegetation around the habitats must be managed by the man in order to keep sound growth of the wild Chuiangne.
