  • Flow features near the ship bow such as wave breaking, small scale phenomena have been studied using numerical methods. In this study, the bow shaped wedge was adopted which is from previous paper [1, 2] and the conditions of simulation were Re = 1.64 × 105) and Fr = 2.93. Star CCM+, one of the commercial CFD programs has been used for the simulations. Simulation results such as wave profiles near the ship bow, shape of plunging jet, air entrainment, and wave breaking process have been compared with previous experimental and numerical studies. Overall results showed good agreements with previous studies. Profiles of bow waves showed that overturning jet has been created and broken along the wedge. Plunging wave breaking has been observed along the wedge and four components of plunging wave breaking process were shown. It is confirmed that velocity near the overturing jet significantly increased during plunging wave breaking.

  • This paper presents a method of minimizing the wave resistance components, due to the linear wave propagating to the far field and the breaking wave in the vicinity of the hull. This method consists of the linear optimization method for the linear wave resistance and the statistical optimization method for the breaking wave resistance through the analysis of the experimental data. For the purpose of the application, a wall-sided model with parabolic waterplane shape was selected as a basic hull form, and two modified hull forms with varied $C_p-curve$ of the fore-body were derived from the linear wave optimization method and the empirical method. The correlation between the linear wave resistance and the breaking wave resistance according to the $C_p-curve$ variation of the fore-body was investigated through the experimental and analytical results for the three hull forms. The fore-body shape optimized by the present method shows the reduction of the wave resistance by 47% comparing to the basic hull form at the design speed($F_n=0.26$).

  • Underwater noise radiated from submarines is directly related to the probability of being detected by the sonar of an enemy vessel. Therefore, minimizing the noise of a submarine is essential for improving survival outcomes. For modern submarines, as the speed and size of a submarine increase and noise reduction technology is developed, interest in flow noise around the hull has been increasing. In this study, a noise analysis technique was developed to predict flow noise generated around a submarine shape considering the free surface effect. When a submarine is operated near a free surface, turbulence-induced noise due to the turbulence of the flow and bubble noise from breaking waves arise. First, to analyze the flow around a submarine, VOF-based incompressible two-phase flow analysis was performed to derive flow field data and the shape of the free surface around the submarine. Turbulence-induced noise was analyzed by applying permeable FW-H, which is an acoustic analogy technique. Bubble noise was derived through a noise model for breaking waves based on the turbulent kinetic energy distribution results obtained from the CFD results. The analysis method developed was verified by comparison with experimental results for a submarine model measured in a Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT).

  • An experimental study has been carried out at circulating water channel to investigate the non-breaking and breaking waves generated by a submerged circular cylinder steadily moving under the free surface. Free surface profiles and pressure distributions on cylinder surface were measured at various submerged depths of cylinder. They were complemented by the measurements of velocities, head losses and turbulence intensities in the wakes of body and "breaker". Part 1 of this three-part paper describes the experimental arrangement and the patterns of wave profile and pressure distribution at various depths of submergence. These databank contributions are of special interest in traditional ship hydrodynamics. In Part 2, special focuses are made to elucidate the viscous and turbulent aspects of flow field. Finally Part 3 will deal with the visualization of instantaneous vortical flow to study the mutual interaction between vorticies shedded from the free-surface and the cylinder using a Particle Image Velocimetry.

  • Impact on cylindrical surface caused by plunging breaking waves is investigated experimentally. The breaking waves are generated in a wave flume by decreasing the wave maker frequencies linearly and focusing the generated wave components at one specific location. The breaking wave packets are based on constant wave steepness spectrum. Three inclination angles of cylinder are applied to examine the effect of contact angle between cylinder and front surface of breaking waves. Also, the effect of cylinder diameter on pressure distribution and its peak value is investigated by adopting three cylinders with different diameters. The longitudinal location of cylinder is slightly moved in eight different points to find out a probable maximum value of impact pressure. The pressures and total force on cylinder surface are measured by piezo-electric pressure sensors and 3-components load cell with 30kHz sampling rate. The variation of peak impact pressures and forces is analyzed in terms of cylinder diameter, inclination angle and location. Also, the pressure distribution on cylindrical surface is examined. The cylinder location and surface position are more important parameters that govern the magnitude and shape of peak pressures, while the cylinder diameter and inclined angle are relatively insignificant. In a certain conditions, the impact phenomenon becomes very unstable which results in a large variation of measured valves in repeated runs.

  • This study described the stability of riprap, which was examined by a two-dimensional physical model of a scattered riprap submarine breakwater. Artificial reef structures made of scattered riprap are used like artificial intertidal zone structures as waterfront seaside structures. To prevent topography change in such an artificial intertidal zone the energy is reduced at the scattered riprap submarine breakwater by intercepting high waves. The breaking waves are converted into flow on the front surface slope of the submarine breakwater, which follows the upper part of the artificial intertidal zone. Because of this phenomenon of resisting water flow, it is very important to calculate the required weight of the riprap to maintain its stability. The results of a physical model can be abstracted as shown below. First, distribute the wave breaking types occurring on the front surface slope of the submarine breakwater and arrange it in relation to the movement of riprap. Second, using the hydraulic phenomenon that occurs at the depth of the scattered riprap submarine breakwater, propose a calculation formula for the velocity distribution showing the influence on the stability of the riprap. Third, propose and compare values, which can be obtained by experiments and calculations for riprap stability on the front surface of the artificial intertidal zone. Fourth, calculate the required weight for riprap stability.
