  • The purpose of this research is particle shape evaluation of aggregate using Digital Image Process(DIP). DIP is very useful to measure the roughness and particle shape of aggregates. Couple of aggregates, like standard sand, two different crushed stones, and two different marine aggregates, have been employed. Shape factors of two different marine aggregates are ranged 0.35 to 0.54. Crushed stone I is 0.74 which is highly flat, but standard sand is elongated shape. Especially, two marine aggregate showed a big difference of width and length which meaned a long shape. There is any significant difference of elongation ratio and flatness for each aggregate with different measuring system, like direct measurement of vernier calipers and DIP method. Shape conversion coefficient and equivalent diameter for changing 2D image to 3D image by the Digital Image Process(DIP) have been suggested and modified particle size distribution curve has been showed. The measured flatness ratios of each aggregate were 0.30, 0.36, 0.47 and 0.83, respectively. Also, the conversion shape coefficients of each aggregate were determinded as 0.77, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.92. The size of aggregate has been modified by multiplying the shape conversion coefficient and the aggregate size from DIP. The modified gradation curve with modified volume and weight of aggregate has been suggested. Within the limited test results, DIP is one of useful to get the particle shape of aggregate with limitation of measuring errors and to apply the particle distribution curve.

  • In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests was carried out to evaluate promoting consolidation of a porous concrete pile fabricated with recycled aggregates (RAPP) method for soft ground improvement. Performing the laboratory chamber tests for the RAPP, characteristics of the surface settlement with time and the consolidation time were compared with those of SCP and GCP provided by You (2009) under the same experimental condition. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the numerical analysis in this study. As a test result, the effects for settlement reduction in both the primary and the secondary consolidation and promoting consolidation by RAPP were prominent comparatively.

  • The demand of aggregate resources in Korea has been increased with a rapid economic growth since the 1980s. About 25% of the total aggregate production is derived from riverine aggregates, 20% to 25% from marine sands, 40% to 45% from crushed aggregate and the rest 5% to 15% from old fluvial deposits. The abundance of crushed coarse aggregates varies in the uniform distribution of country, but in general it can be concentrated in the most densely populated areas, five main cities. Typical rock types of the Korean crushed stones are classified as plutonic rocks of 27%, metamorphic rocks of 32%, sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks of 18%, respectively. The most abundant coarse aggregate used in the country is obtained from granite (25% of total) and subordinately gneiss (20%), sandstone (10%) and andesite (10%). Although rock types using as dimension stone are only fifteen, those as aggregate amount up to twenty nine rocks. These rocks consist of plutonic rocks such as granite, syenite, diorite, aplite, porphyry, felsite. dike and volcanic rocks such as rhyolite, andesite, trachyte, basalt, tuff, volcanic breccia and metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, schist, phyllite, slate, meld-sandstone, quartzite, hornfels, calc-silicate rock, amphibolite. And sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerate, limestone, breccia, chert are main aggregate sources in tile sedimentary rocks. The abundance of plutonic rocks is the highest in Chungcheongbuk-do, and decreases as the order of Jeollabuk-do, Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do. In Jeollanam-do, volcanic aggregates occupy above 50%, on the contrary sedimentary aggregates are above 50% in Gyeongsangnam-do.

  • A method for lmprovlng strengths of recycled concrete was studied to make use of it in nolmal concrete structures. Recycled conc~ete was prepared by replacing 50% by weight of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Mix design rnet hod for crushed aggregates was used and specirriens were cured by normal moisture curing method. A plastlciser and a fly ash were added to the mix to improve performance of recycled concrete. Compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain relationship, long-term compressive strength and fracture toughness were evaluated and compared with those of rlormal concretes. Recycled concrete showed, in general, lower compressive strength than normal concreks. It also showed lower elastic modulus, lower tensile and flexural strengths, and higher strain under the same stress level. However, by reducing w /c ratio down to 35% using the plasticiser. average compressive strength(${\alpha}_{28}$) of recycled concrete was reached. with slump of $16{\pm}2$cm, to $225kg/cm^2$ or hlgher, which is an acceptable strmgth level for normal structural concrete. I-Iowevei., elastic modulus and strain should be improved further for practical use of recycled concrctc: in normal structure. Fly ash addition in both concretes showed an effect of irnprovilig long term compressive strength and reducing strengths.

  • The damages due to alkali-aggregate reaction between the reactive silicia constituents of the aggregate and the alkalies in cement have been frequently reported since 1923 in America . Recently alkali-aggregate reaction, especially alkali-silica reaction, can be found all over the area using crushed stones. The first research, in 1990, was performed to identify the alkali-silica reactivity of 18 sets of crushed stones used in domestic ready-mixed concrete plant as coarse aggregates by 4 petrollgical, chemical and mortar bar method, And the study was continued with 10 sets of crushed stones in this research. It was found that all the aggregates used in this study are innocuous at alkali-silica reaction.

  • Since the first report on the damage of concrete structures due to alkali-aggregate reaction by T.E Stanton in 1940, cases of the damage are being reported in many countries. in the country, it is necessary to research the alkali-aggregate reaction of the crushed stone because of the short comings of natural aggregate and increasing needs of crushed stones. In this research, crushed stones from 63 local sites are collected and tested by ASTM C 289 chemical method.. The results show that most of the crushed stones are innocuous. However, the crushed stones from three sites are deleterious to the reaction by JIS A 5308. Petrographic and Mortar-Bar test will be carried out to find out any possibility of deleteriousness of the crushed stones

• In this study, field test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as horizontal drains to use an alternative material of sand in soft ground is practiced. The settlement with time showed similarly ranged from 28.4-30.3 cm in the all horizontal materials. The excess pore water pressure of the recycled aggregates and crushed stone showed smaller than sand. The small the excess pore water pressure becomes faster the consolidation period and it can reduces the amount of residual settlement. Therefore, it was verified as having enough to an alternative materials that the field applicability is excellent. The distribution of earth pressure with time showed similarly in the all horizontal materials. The recycled aggregates and crushed stone was very applicable to practice because there is no mat resistance in the horizontal drains layer. The penetration rate in the SCP and PVD improvement sections did not show large differences as the grain size and the horizontal drainage height increases.

  • The term Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) is used to describe a reaction between certain siliceous aggregates and hydroxyl ions present in the pore fluid of a concrete. The ASR is affected by the content of alkali, the particle size and the content of reactive aggregate, water-cement ratio, humidity, temperature and so on. In this paper, the fluence of alkali content and kind of added alkali to the ASR was studied. As a result, the more the content of alkali was increased, the more the mortar-bar was expand and the expansion of mortar-bar was showed differently with the added alkali kinds, The reaction products by ASR were observed by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and analyzed by EDXA(Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis) also and showed a gel composed of alkali(Na+, K+), silica and calcium.
