This study is to investigate the damage assessment of adjacent structures due to excavation in urban environment. Model tests were carried out for 2 story masonry building and frame structures in various shapes and locations. The damage level of adjacent structures were very differently estimated in accordance with the shape ratio (L/h) of structures, construction stages, and various locations. Therefore the most weak part (bay) of structure must be heavily instrumented and monitored in more details at early stage of constructions. The progressive crack development mechanism at various construction stages was revealed through model tests and crack size indicated more conservative side of damage level on the damage level graph.

In this paper, the quantitative damage index for reinforced concrete (RC) columns with non-seismic details were presented. They are necessary to carry out the postearthquake safety evaluation of RC buildings under 5 stories without seismic details. The static cyclic test of the RC frame sub-assemblage that was an one span and actual-sized was first conducted. The specimen collapsed by the shear failure after flexural yielding of a column, lots of cracks on the surfaces of columns and beam-column joints and the cover concrete splitting at the bottom of columns occurred. The damage levels of these kinds of columns with non-seismic details were classified to five based on the load-displacement relationship by the test result. The residual story drift ratios and crack widths were then adapted as the quantitative index to evaluate the damage limit states because those values were comparatively easy to measure right after earthquakes. The highest one among the residual story drift ratios under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual story drift ratio of each damage limit state. On the other hand, the lowest and average ones among the respective residual shear and flexural widths under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual shear and flexural widths of each damage limit state, respectively. These values for each damage limit state resulted in being smaller than those by the international damage evaluation guidelines that are for seismically designed members under the same deformations.

A damage identification technique using static displacement data is developed to asses s the structural integrity of bridge structures. As such, the relationship between static displacement and stiffness is derived, and the optimization technique utilized.Comparisons with numerical and experimental tests are performed to investigate the practical applicability of the proposed method.Various damage scenarios are considered by varying damage-width as well as damage-degree. The influence of noise in identifying the damage is also numerically investigated. Finally, the applicability and limitation of the proposed method are discussed.
This paper deals with development of a damage risk assessment system for adjacent buildings to under-passing tunnel face considering 3D-ground movement. The system consists of building and ground information module, monitoring data module, settlement evaluation module, and building damage risk assessment module. The major modules, settlement evaluation module and building damage assessment module, are based on settlement estimation model suggested by Attewell et al (1982) and the building damage assessment method by Mair et al. (1996). After estimating 3D-ground movements due to tunneling with settlement evaluation module, damage assessment far buildings is performed using building damage risk assessment module. The developed system has two major functions; 1) calculation of 3D-settlement with ground loss ($V_{s}$)or maximum settlement ($w_{max}$) and inflection point (i) using various empirical formulae, monitoring data, numerical results, and so on; 2) assessment of damage risk for adjacent buildings of arbitrary section with position change of tunnel face. The field data given by Boscadin and Cording (1989) leer the case of two-storied masonry building near the Metro tunnel in Washington D.C. was simulated to verify the applicability of the developed system.
The quantitative risk assessment methods for thermal failure in targets were studied using fire modeling. To this end, Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), as a representative fire model, was used and the probabilities related to thermal damage to an electrical cable were evaluated according to the change in fire area inside a specific compartment. 'The maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds' adopted in a conservative point of view and 'the probability of failure' including the time to damage were compared. The probability of failure suggested in the present study could evaluate the quantitative fire risk more realistically, compared to the maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds with the assumption that thermal damage occurred the instant the target reached its minimum failure criteria in terms of the surface temperature and heat flux.
In this paper, the previous damage models for structures and their components under seismic repeated loading were reviewed systematically. A failure criterion for steel members under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was described. A new approach to seismic damage assessment for steel members was proposed. This method was based on a series of the experimental and numerical investigations for steel members under very low cyclic loading. In this study, very low cyclic loading means repetitive loading, 5 to 20 loading cycles, within the large plastic range. The proposed damage assessment method was focused on the local strain history at the cross-section of the most severe concentration of deformation.

Frequency analysis of city gas pipeline was studied and then the method to give frequencies of failure by the third-party digging, corrosion, ground movement, and equipment failure which were known to be the major cause of risk of city gas pipeline. The failure by the third-party digging was analyzed by fault tree analysis and the failure by corrosion was analyzed by applying equation calculating remaining strength with time. The failure by ground movement was evaluated by applying modified model which was induced through weighing factors with basic failure rate model. The failure rate of equipment was calculated with both generic and specific data
